Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Tripp Lite A102-02M Digital Optical Audio Cable with 2 Toslink connectors - 2M (6ft)

Customer Review: Quality toslink cable that does the job
Summary: 5 Stars

For anyone looking for a digital optical cable, the Tripp Lite is a very affordable solution. It is not the highest quality cable, but since it is transmitting a digital signal, quality does not really matter. The only way quality comes into play with optical cables is in the housing. There are many cheap cables out there that can have the ends break off after a lot of reconnecting. This cable is sort of mid-quality in terms of housing. It does not feel cheap, but I also wouldn't expect it to last ten years like a Monster cable would. But at this price, it is a great choice if you plan on connecting it and leaving it alone for awhile. I have bought two and it sounds great.

Do not be fooled into spending $80 for Monster cables when this cable does exactly what it needs to. I have a premium "Monster-type" cable and there is no distinguishable difference in sound. If you are currently using component or God-forbid, analog RCA cables for your audio connections, I definitely recommend upgrading to toslink. You will definitely notice a difference in sound.

Customer Review: Xbox360 Elite to Receiver
Summary: 5 Stars

Perfect connection between the Xbox 360 EliteXbox 360 Elite System Console Includes 120GB Hard Drive and a 5.1 Onkyo receiver Onkyo HT-S3100 5.1 Channel Home Entertainment System (Set of Seven, Black). The connections are firm. (I could have alternately chosen to hook the TV to the receiver with the same cable.. but have not tried that yet.)

Note that neither the 360 nor the receiver come with such a cable (though if you plan to hear anything beyond stereo, you need it). Also, (from web research), don't get a 6' cable if 3' will do.

Some sites tout the benefit of optical over other choices for multi-channel audio; but as far as I tell with the Xbox, there isn't any other choice to worry about. You either need a toslink from the xbox to the receiver (or TV to receiver) or you go with HDMI to the receiver (cheap ones don't support HDMI).

Customer Review: It does the job just fine
Summary: 5 Stars

Needing a new optical cable to connect my computer to my stereo, I searched for the most economical one here, and ended up buying the Tripp Lite cable. Unlike analog cables where issues of shielding and construction can have (often subtle) effects on sound quality, a digital cable like this either works or it doesn't. It's been working for me just for a couple of months now. The cable is thin and pliable, but durable and has survived various adjustments I've made to my desk setup.

I should mention that the plugs on both sides of this cable are TOSLink plugs, that is, square. If you need to plug one end into a device with a headphone jack (like a laptop), be sure to get an adapter. That's no fault of the cable, just a necessity that this buyer initially overlooked.

Customer Review: Does the Job
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a little hesitant to order this cable based on some review comments about the plugs fitting loosely. But for the price I figured why not give it a try because the brick and mortar stores charge outrageous prices for these cables. After I received it, I hooked it up between an Onkyo A/V receiver and a Sony blu ray player, as well as between an Onkyo C/D player and the A/V receiver and yes, the connection is not as snug as my other optical cord but it has no problems staying in the socket. It clicks in and the only way it will come out is if you pull or yank it out. It will not fall out by itself. Performance-wise, it carries signals just fine. I would purchase this again if I needed another cable. The build quality is not as good as my other optical cable (I don't know what brand the other is) but it works and the price is right - it does the job.

Customer Review: Good Cable, Better Price
Summary: 5 Stars

This cable was a great deal. It does what I expect, and does it well. I'm not an audiophile, but can tell when a cable is just bad. This is NOT a bad cable.

Some may say it's flimsy looking, but I don't see that as a consideration for this cable. You install it, and then leave it alone. Optical doesn't require shielding like wire, so it saves that extra bit of diameter. As long as you are mindful that it not get crimped or stepped on, it should last as long as you need it to.

Don't waste money buying a cable at retail stores. They are way overpriced, and the extra $$$ you pay isn't going to get you anything better, except maybe a company name stamped on the cable ends, which most people won't even see anyhow.

Great cable!
