Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Incredible MXZ Pocket Saw - As Seen On TV

Customer Review: MXZ Pocket Saw
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the MXZ Pocket Saw for my boyfriend who is a firefighter, to put into his turnout gear and he loves it the product was excellent and we plan on ordering again from amazon

Customer Review: Handy, handy, handy.
Summary: 4 Stars

Not bad for a "do-all" In some instances, a specialized device would be better. Worth the cost.

Customer Review: Oversold product, sets unreasonably high expectations
Summary: 3 Stars

The saw isn't bad, but it isn't nearly the utilitarian bonanza that they advertise.

To begin with, anyone who thinks about cutting wood with this 'blade'- that basically amounts to a carbide impregnated burr- really, really sucks at understanding the way tools work. They shouldn't have bothered advertising this saw for use on wood; their doing so borders on being dishonest. You can 'cut wood' with a metal butter knife, too, but it's not going to do so well. I do think this tool was seriously oversold, which is a shame, seeing as 'what it is' isn't all that bad.

First off, if you want this tool to perform, you should be someone generally familiar with using saws, how to effect the best cutting advantages, etc. Sounds simple enough, but really, most people aren't (even though everyone thinks they are). Secondly, you should be a reasonably strong person to impart the needed pressure that's required during the rather unique cutting action of this saw.

It does many things mediocre, no one thing particularly well, but there is some virtue in this. I eventually went on to purchase one for a friend who is interested in wreck diving, doing full penetration dives on sunken ships (meaning, he actually goes inside the ships while underwater). This is an inherently dangerous 'hobby' and might call on an array of cutting tasks that no one saw can do... so, now, he dives with this. We're actually considering modifying this by milling out the channel in the handle so it accepts two blades; the factory carbine one for iron and metal and a recip-saw blade for wood. That way, there's something in the saw for pretty much every scenario he might face that his dive knife or line cutter can't handle.

General construction is fairly robust, which was nice to see... It seems to be made some some consideration towards durability.

Anyway, I give this three stars using an objective rating- seeing how badly it was oversold, I can totally understand why others give it one or two stars. They were expecting too much and understandably so. If you comprehend the saw for what it is, don't expect it to perform quite up to the 'as seen on TV' stuff they advertised and actually have a specific use for it in mind when you purchase it, it's worth the $10 or $15.

Again, I reiterate- ignore what you saw on TV. It's not a catch-all tool. It's actually a rather specialized tool that, if you need it, you will know it without having to see a commercial to convince you.

Customer Review: Works on plastic
Summary: 3 Stars

I picked one of these up a long time ago. After owning it for several years, I can say this:
* It's great for cutting plastic. I've hacked my way through many a plastic thing with very little effort thanks to this tool.
* It is, in fact, capable of cutting aluminum and soft metals. Schedule some time to do it because you'll be there all day, but it works.
* This tool is awful for cutting wood. If you absolutely need a tool like this for cutting wood, purchase another blade. This blade is less effective on wood than metal. The saw blade on a generic multitool will do a better job.

Customer Review: Great for handy use with 'other' blades
Summary: 3 Stars

This MXZ saw is the same as the Lenox Tri-fold saw. (Just different color).
The MXZ will use any standarding 1/2 tang reciprocating saw blade.

I am buying this saw so I can use my other 'real' blades on it.
The included blade is a joke because it would be too slow to cut anything by hand.
