Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle NavigatorCustomer Review: An excellent low-cost GPS solution. Summary: 5 Stars
After spending a couple months wrestling with, and researching, Global Positioning System devices, I finally settled on the Tom Tom One just before a trip from Washington, DC to Detroit, MI. The device performed beautifully throughout the trip, and has since made navigating the Washington, DC area much more enjoyable.
Do be aware that the device will find the fastest navigation route - even through it may take you someplace unexpected. For instance, while traversing Ohio (we stayed overnight in the Columbus area), the device took us north via some back roads I otherwise would not have known existed. Including one that wasn't paved. Not surprisingly, this saved us quite a bit of time.
Mounting options exist beyond the window mount, though you'll probably need to order them from the company. Details can be found in the brochures accompanying the device, or at the Tom Tom web site.
It's also worth visiting the web site using the included software, to ensure that you have the most up-to-date software, and any maps beyond Canada and the U.S. you might need. Frankly, I haven't seen the necessity given that I use the device solely in the area provided off the shelf.
Customer Review: TomTom One gets the job done Summary: 5 Stars
I can't imagine anything better for this price. I bought mine on sale for $200 right before I went on vacation to Baltimore with my family. My system came with preloaded maps internally. An SD card can be used store maps of other continents (which must be purchased separately). I didn't map my routes beforehand, and TomTom One came through every time. Here are some pros and cons I noticed:
PROS -
- Works right out of the box (It really does, and it only took me about 10 minutes to set up)
-User friendly interface, touchscreen, and intuitive.
- Voice instruction can be set very loud (I was able to hear it over my 5 & 6 year olds fighting in the back seat)
- Bright screen, with contrasting colors
- Easy to understand directions, that gets the job done
- Fast to recalculate
CONS-
- Does not announce street names
- Unit is off many times by approx. 20 yds (can be confusing when roads are close together)
- Screen gets washed out in bright sunlight (I guess they all are)
I don't believe it can be beat at this price.
Customer Review: Great Product for the Price! Summary: 5 Stars
For 6 months I poured over all of the gps units available out there...garmin, magellan, navigon, etc. and ultimately decided to go with the TomTom as it seemed to have both the good price and the high quality of product I was searching for. I'm a frequent traveler for work and for pleasure and I thought this device would be a handy tool for navigating and finding nearby restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, etc.
I just bought the TomTom about 2 weeks ago and was able to figure out how to use it straight out of the box. It has been a very easy to use and surprisingly has more features than I originally anticipated. One feature I've especially liked are the itinerary planning. If I am going to say my hotel and then to a restaurant and then to a bar I can set all of those 3 points as an itinerary and it will navigate me to each one in that order without having to enter in each destination as I need to go to them.
I've used it in large cities and in rural areas with excellent results. Occasionally it will give you a roundabout way to get somewhere, but you'll certainly get there.
Overall, for the price this unit simply cannot be beat.
Customer Review: What a life saver! Summary: 5 Stars
Forgive me for not being the most high-tech girl in the world. I'm always a little behind the rest of humanity with respect to gadgets and devices. I know there are better (and way more expensive) GPS devices out there. However, since I have never owned or used a GPS before purchasing my TomTom One, I really don't have anything to compare it to. (That could be a good thing, as I haven't been spoiled with those fancy models!)
All I can say is that this thing is a LIFE SAVER! I can't tell you how many times I've gone on trips (armed with misleading Mapquest directions) and gotten hopelessly lost. No more. I'm thrilled with my new purchase. The directions are accurate, the features are numerous, and the voice telling me where to go is very pleasant. (And she never curses me out when I disobey her and go left instead of right.) I'm just amazed at this technology. And this is supposed to be an entry-level, barebones model for beginners? Wow! I haven't even gotten to use 75% of the features yet. It gets me from point A to point B flawlessly and helps me avoid horrendous traffic jams. What more I could ask for in GPS device? $200 well spent!
Customer Review: Haven't gotten lost yet Summary: 5 Stars
My wife and I recently moved across the country to a city I hardly ever drove in. After the first few weeks I insisted I get a GPS and decided to get the TomTom One based on price and features. We can say this little baby has saved our marriage! Clear, loud directions from Mickey, a free add-on voice when purchased, have shuttled us across town and across the state. It even knew dirt roads along the Naches River near Yakima WA. And it is easy to add new addresses and plot your course with all of the features. It doesn't remember the path you take or say street names like the the more expensive models, but it knows when to put you in the right or left lane for merges or turns and give you plenty of warning before your next way point, something other GPSs I've played with don't do very well. The only other thing that disappoints me is the traffic feature. Be advised US drivers, you will need a Bluetooth cell phone to pick up data packets to transmit to the TomTom. It is a European product and only picks up European cell signals on it's own. I hope this feature is ready for the US market soon. Then this little device will be unstoppable.
