Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle NavigatorCustomer Review: Excellent Navigation Appliance Summary: 5 Stars
Two weeks ago, my wife and I purchased the TT ONE to travel in Florida - from Miami to Orlando and Tampa and then back to Miami. We chose the ONE because we wanted basic navigation and did not need MP3 ability or a photo viewer.
After updating the unit with the retail poi update from the TomTom website, we chose the fastest route (default) to our hotel which was located just off I4 in Orlando. We were routed along the Florida Turnpike to I4, avoiding the slow but somewhat shorter, confusing route through Kissimmee. Great!
During our stay, we came to appreciate the value of the ONE to provide direct routing to various theme parks, malls and even the nearest gas station. The fact that the ONE does not have text-to-speech ability is of minor concern to us because the unit does an outstanding job of positioning the driver ahead of the next lane change or turn. Instructions are repeated with increasing frequency until the maneuver is performed. Detours are no problem because the unit recalculates a route to your destination within seconds. The sound quality is excellent.
We encountered a few instances where certain addresses were unknown to the device. This is an issue with ALL GPS products especially in growing communities because the internal map and poi information will not be identical to the real world. GPS manufacturers try to resolve the gaps on subsequent map updates. Remember, when planning a trip into an unknown area, be sure to have the phone number of your destination as well as an alternate address located as near as possible to your intended destination. Use your cell phone if necessary. Having a navigation device does not eliminate the need for you to locate entrances to parking lots and buildings; you must still use your eyes and brain.
In short, TomTom has developed an excellent navigational device; it is well built, reliable, intuitive and accurate during operation. It works right out of the box like any good appliance should.
Customer Review: Cool little device Summary: 5 Stars
This is a nice product. Quality build much like and apple product. Finds the directions needed quickly and reroutes fast. Touchscreen takes about 5 minutes to get the hang of and works with your fingernail tapping the screen and there is no need to get your finger tip placed directly on it.
Nice bright screen too. At first I thought the 3.5 inch screen might be too small...nope it is is just fine and the graphics are slick. Well worth the $200+ bucks. My wife made fun of me and said " yep looks like a silly gadget only you would like". She likes the thing more than I do. She has no directional compass in her brain and cold get lost in a closet.
The stupidest things I have heard about this product while reading other reviews -
It doesn't say the name of the street you need to turn on.
My comment to that would be - GOOD! It states clearly at the bottom of the screen in crisp text the name of the next turn you need to take and the distance until that turn. Plus you don't really want to hear some computerized voice butcher the name so bad it may confuse you and you wouldn't understand anyway. Good Job Tom Tom. Nice omit.
This may be a bad thing for people who cannot read but are allowed to get drivers licenses anyway.
Another thing that I found really really dumb. Someone said it takes up to 60 seconds for it to find a route across the country and that was just too damn long. (it takes about 2 seconds literally to find a local route) Seriously, if you are about to take a 4 day drive across the country and cannot wait 60 seconds to get the route then perhaps behind the wheel of a one and a half ton steel structure that travels at high velocity is just not the place for you. That's just my opinion I could be wrong.
Buy this gadget. It's simplicity is wonderful and practical.
Customer Review: TomTom One vs Garmin Nuvii Summary: 5 Stars
I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvii 350, used it for a couple of months, hated it, sold it, and bought a TomTom One. For me, the TomTom unit is much better. It's going to be a long time before any of these units will route the user as well as a person familiar with the area, but all in all, I've very happy with the TomTom One.
The TomTom activates in 10 seconds, the Garmin takes three times as long and insists every time that you agree to their disclaimer. The TomTom unit has a better designed screen, making the vital information (what direction is the next turn and how far) easily readable even with glare on the screen. It is much easier to understand because the text to voice function is clearer and because its volume varies with road speed. You'd think that the Garmin would be better because it tells you the street name for the next turn, but half the time you can't understand it, and because the screen is so poor you can't read it either.
The TomTom allows use of a QUERTY layout for entering information which is much more natural for anyone using a keyboard every day. It has a big suction cup that sticks to the window fairly well. It allows for itinerary planning. The Garmin has none of these features.
Both units allow for navigating to a specific latitude/longitude location. Both allow traveling via an alternate route or location. Both units are pretty good, but not great at route planning.
The Garmin has an MP3 player. That would be a great thing, but in a suddenly stressful driving situation, it cannot be turned off easily. For me this makes it useless.
Customer Review: the difference of having a great or a terrible vacation Summary: 5 Stars
i bought the gps for my 2 wk vacation to orlando, i recived it as promised by amazon with no charge of delivery.
this tomtom gps was the difference of having a great vacation a not a horrible one, i saved time, fights with my wife of which directions to take, reroute in a second and is very accurate, never let me down.
this 200 usd investment also saved me arround 15,000 usd....yes 15,000 usd, one day coming back from a park we decided to stop ina kentucky fried chicken in the way back the hotel, we ate and leave the restaurant, 5 minutes away from the hotel my wife told me that she forgot her purse in the restaurant, of course i tried to confort her, until she told me that her credit card with 15,000 fifteen thousand dollars credit limit, with out used a penny yet, was in the purse....i really freaked out big time, imagine u stop in a restaurant you dont know where the restaurant was, how long can u take to ask, and try to find the same restaurant almost at 10 pm.
well as i went to the kfc by the reference of the gps on the points of interest that are coming in the tomtom one, i just click back to priors trips, and i went back in less than 20 minutes to kfc with out having a clue where the restaurant was......awossooooommmmmmmmmeeeeeeee!!!!!!!
whe got the purse back and my 200 usd investment became in to a saving of 15000 dollars, thanks to this beatiful gps.
and it really works out of the box, the only recomendetion is to call first where u want to go to find the adress, tom tom will do the rest for great!!!!!!!!!
Customer Review: Tom Tom Great GPS Unit Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this unit for my wife(a real-estate agent). I did a lot of comparisions and read a ton of reviews on GPS units, leaving money out of the picture I focused on two things that she needs/uses on a daily basis. Itinerary(multiple addresses) and two possible saftey features. This allows up to 10 addresses for an itinerary that she can rank in her order, This was probably the main reason. Second was safety, this has a buddy system, which allows another tomtom owner to see where you are. Now we have not used this or tested it yet, but it does have some capability for me to track the device(will do in the future). I could not find any other device that allows any sort of tracking/locating. So this won out. The device works great, she loves it. We used it for two vacations and it worked flawless, did not give me the route I wanted to take for our trip to N.C.(which no GPS unit would have been able to do, because I go a specific route), but was still extremely helpful. For our other vacation, I had no clue where I was going and it did a perfect job. It does not say street names, but that is a preference that makes no difference. For the money it is perfect, and I really did not see any other reason to purchase a more expensive model, did not need another mp3 player or photo viewer. I would have gladly spent more if it was needed, but I needed GPS for a real-estate agent, and I could not find anything that was better than the tom tom one V2. (I am not considering buying the V3)
Thanks to all who took the time to leave a review it helped me tremendously!
