Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom ONE 3rd Edition 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Vehicle NavigatorCustomer Review: Tom Tom One vs Magellan and Text to Speech Summary: 5 Stars
I replaced a Magellan 4040 with this. The Magellan had text to speech - wide screen - blue tooth and AAA guides. Cost much more.
In my opinion the inexpensive Tom Tom beats the Magellan hands down, even without text to speech.
Text to speech is a great concept but seems to strain the processor to the point that it would sometimes forget to give you street names OR directions. Very bad. I had 2 Magellan's ( I thought first was defective and returned it ) and both would do this. I would much rather hear "turn right in 500 feet" than no instructions at all. Many times I was blocks past my turn before Magellan would announce it. Not good.
Both Magellan's got flaky on me as well. One would need an occasional reboot for a frozen screen, the other would occasionally tell me I had reached my destination when it was still miles away.
Tom Tom has been rock solid.
Tom Tom NEVER misses a turn voice command. They are quite detailed as well unlike Magellan. Magellan says "turn right at Blair Street" where Tom Tom says "turn right in 200 feet than make third left".
POI in Tom Tom is way better in my area than Magellan. It had an espresso stands that only opened 4 months ago near me! Of course results may vary depending upon where you live.
Voice is loud and clear, map colors are changeable, interface is very customizable.
Also Tom Tom guarantees a free download of the latest map for your unit at purchase. Garman and Magellan have very vague policies on that and may charge you for the latest map.
I have owned both Garman C220 and Magellan 4040. I will be most likely be purchasing Tom Tom from now on....
Customer Review: TomTom One Navigator - - - Get one. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a well made, quality product that does all that is advertised and much more. I have not actually made a long trip with it as yet, but have made short trial runs and am amazed how much it has programed into it. It has a built in compass showing travel direction. It shows "atomic" clock time from the satellite. Your vehicle speed is shown in MPH on the display and can be set to sound a signal at any set speed. The daytime display is bright enough to see under most conditions and is adjustable. The night display is excellent and blends in with most instrument panel lights. The variety of voices is limited and I found the male voice to have the most clarity over road noises. Other reviewers have complained about it wanting you to make U-turns and take alternate routes. This will happen if you are near a highway and you have selected "fastest route" from the menu. If you prefer secondary roads, then select "shortest route" from the menu. Also be selective in showing too much information on your route. Too many gas stations, motels, etc.etc. will actually obliterate the road on the display. The menu of features is too varied to describe here, so the first thing I would recommend is to go on line and print out the manual, at least pages 1 through 34. The TomTom One, 3rd Edition, was highly rated by a leading consumer magazine and I think it will be a very useful addition to your vehicle. On closing, if you find it difficult to find a satisfactory place to position the suction cup mount, look in to the "Nav-Mat" holder available through Amazon. This is a donut shaped beanbag with a flat center and rubberized bottom to allow placement most anywhere on the dashboard. Safe journeys!
Customer Review: Tom Tom ONE GPS by the Consummate Consumer Summary: 5 Stars
The Tom Tom ONE is a great product for anyone looking to take the sting out of being in the navigator role that commonly follows occupying the passenger seat. All too often, tempers can flare when drivers (or backseat passengers) query: "how far are we from our destination?", "what town are we in?", "is there a gas station nearby?"
A general comment about really any GPS system is that it can suitably improve your driving experience (or hiking, biking, etc). Why not benefit from our government's military engineering and make use of global positioning for getting around efficiently?
Specifically, the Tom Tom ONE is a great GPS to suit most any advanced or "beginner" GPS user. It is a touchscreen driven device which is intuitive. It offers a clear display showing your route including points of interest along the way. As well, it offers several different "voices" to mix it up a bit. You can choose from among several preinstalled male and female american, british, or australian generic voices. In addition, you can purchase and install "fancy" voices such as "NY cab driver"-if that is your pleasure.
I recommend this based on ease of use (touchscreen and voice), value, durability (rubberized), size (relatively small with a nice big screen).
Perhaps the best attribute is that this device offers automatic reroutes (i.e. you take a wrong turn and instead of telling you to make a u-turn, this will actually recalculate automatically to the fastest route from where you are now).
*I have had several versions of this device including the software which interfaces with a windows mobile phone.
Customer Review: Tough as a nail Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this product for over a year now and I couldn't be more satisfied.
Pros:
-This gives me fairly accurate directions (it does have a tendency to announce sometimes that you have arrived when actually you are 100+ feet away... but all I do is slow down and look around).
-It has an option where I can avoid a portion of the route... very nice. While driving from Boston to New Jersey, I know the George Washington Bridge is going to have traffic so I simply avoid that portion of the route and walla... it automatically navigates me through some other bridge.
-Also, it has many different ways of entering address... so that you do not need to know the complete address always. There is no need to enter both zip and city name... either one will suffice.
-This is built very tough (see explanation** below)
Cons:
-My only complaint would be that the mounting cup looses suction soon and my GPS keeps dropping approximately once every 45 minutes. But there are ways to work around this though (easiest one is to apply few drops of water in the suction cup before sticking it to the windshield if you dont mind the dirty stains on your windshield).
Pros (contd):
-**But the above mentioned complaint also let me discover probably the strongest advantage of this GPS. It is built very strong. I have managed to drop it almost 40 times so far, but it still works as well as it did on day one.
-Best of all, its cheap.
So to summarize, this product is a no-frills GPS and its meant to provide you with driving directions - It excels in doing its job!
Customer Review: TomTom One 3rd ed unbeatable PND for price Summary: 5 Stars
The TomTom One 3rd edition exceeds expectations in the low end Personal Navigation Device (PND) category. I got a "refurb" which seemed to be absolutely new. Worked great out of the box, the TomTom service is simple to use, and ability to add one's own POIs easily is welcome. Many 3rd party services provide ability to add POIs to the TomTom One 3ed (TTO3).
Nice touches:
- Google Maps now allows destinations to be selected from a Google map and downloaded easily to the TTO3ed
- MapShare is TomTom's proprietary user update facility which provides both the "TomTom Community" updates to TomTom maps, and allows for sharing of POIs, though 3rd party POI services are great enhancements IMO
- TomTom mount makes it VERY easy to remove the TTO3 from the windshield mount, interesting shape (kinda high replacement cost!)
My complaints (not major):
- wish the TTO3 had kept the SD card slot, with prior TTOs you could swap SD cards and thus swap maps, POIs, etc. Now have to have attach to a host device
- battery life is low (2 hours typical), easily solved with an IOGear Gear Juice attached which worked great for a 4 hour outing capturing POIs (wasn't near car to use car charger) while also sharing the Gear Juice for mini-DVD camcorder charging
- TomTom Home (V2) software is not functional when the TTO3ed device isn't attached to the PC. Could have some many functions to allow for update and work "offline", too bad.
- this PND, and others in its category, aren't usable when the location you are in is outside a downloaded map, such as when I went to Russia.
