Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom ONE 140-S 3.5-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: Excellent value but not perfect Summary: 5 Stars
I was going to buy the TomTom 730 because I really wanted IQ Routing but when this came out, I could get IQRoutes for a lot less. I can live without traffic features (not very accurate in my area anyway). It was a close call between this and the XL 340-S but the screen size is not a big deal for me. Think about it; 3.5" is about the same as an iPhone screen. As it turns out, in practice, the screen is plenty big enough.
Loves:
Mini-USB power. My Blackberrys, my Sansa clip, and my GPS now all use the same power. I wired two USB power ports into my dash so I always have easy power without using up the power port.
Flexibility, strength, and portability of the mounting system.
IQRoutes. Work as advertised in my area finding shortcuts that I didn't know existed having lived in the area for years.
Nits:
I really like the flexibility of the mount but you need two hands to snap the unit back into the mount.
Sometimes it's a bit slow picking up my location. I'm used to cell phone based GPS which has an advantage because it can use the towers to get an approximation which speeds up the satellite pickup. Also, the reception is OK. Not as good as my dedicated bluetooth puck. Better than a cell phone GPS.
The battery life is not great and there is no indicator on the main display of how much you have left.
Customer Review: My TomTom 140-S Works! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had the 140-S for about a month now. Until now I've just played around with it to and from work, just learning how it operates.
Acouple weeks ago I had a delivery to a customer in a new housing development about 50 miles away. He was located out in the country on a new street but the TomTom took me straight to his door and then back to the office!
That evening after work I drove to visit my son in Marietta/ Atlanta, Ga using the TomTom. I've been there a couple times but have had trouble finding his house both times. He lives about 25 miles off the interstate and Marietta/Atlanta can be a headache to navigate especially at night. What do you know? It worked again! Found his house in the dark!
The lane assist really came in handy whenever on the Atlanta outer belt. It let me know in plenty of time whether to bear left or right before an off or on ramp. Those graphics were pretty cool. The overspeed warning was also nice. The unit was plenty loud even with the diesel engine noise.
If there was a drawback it was the fact that the sun's glare off my dash made the screen difficult to see at times but it was never completely washed out. If I used it on a daily basis I would invest in one of those aftermarket sunshades.
I'm a satisfied customer.
Customer Review: LOVE IT! BESTEST BUY EVERY....for the price? Heck yeah Summary: 5 Stars
When I first got this I was like....are you kidding? trust this thing with giving me good directions?
Now I don't travel far without it. I have to travel to unknown places all the time and with this little Tom Tom....it's so relaxing to know it's got my back.
If you miss a turn or an exit...it refigures the route and sets you straight!
It's easy to check it as you are driving. The screen is big enough and the graphics are easy to follow.
No added downloads available.
Yes, you have to power on and off. But how lazy do you have to be, that you can't simply push a little button for a split second? lol.
The voices are cute. You have a variety to choose from and they give you fair warning. The pronunciation of some streets and cities is hysterical and great for a chuckle, I don't ask for the computer generated voice, so that's why, but you can still figure out what they're saying, so it's not a big deal.
You don't need to download any extras if you just want the basics, which frankly, has been good enough for me.
I LOVE this little gadget and I think it's awesome and would highly recommend it to anyone who just needs a talking map.
Customer Review: Excellent routing! Summary: 5 Stars
I have just replaced my TomTom One 130S with the 140S. The IQ Routes Technology dramatically improves the routing. I have owned Navman, Mio, and Garmin GPS units. This one has the best routing yet! This is an excellent value!
Edit: I just returned from a trip from Rochester, NY to Charleston, WV to Topsail, NC.
I was very impressed with my 140S. It never suggested a faulty or weird route. One route it suggested in West Virginia was far superior to the route I normally take.
The voice directions always seem to be spoken at exactly the right time.
"Reality views" of expressway interchanges popped up frequently. I have really come to appreciate the feature.
I love that you can set voice warnings for Rest Areas.
The only negative thing I have to report is that some POIs in the Topsail, NC area were shown in wrong locations. I also found this to be the case with my Garmin 260 last year.
A new section of interstate in North Carolina is in the latest map. My brother's Garmin (with the latest map) does not yet show the new road.
I have more confidence in the 140S than any GPS I have owned.
Customer Review: Excellent GPS Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I really was amazed by the sleek look and size of the gps when I received it.
It comes it this flat sleek box makes one wonder if it really is there in the box.
Coming to the specs...I own a Garmin and in comparison to the same I think its worked equally well.
I totally was updated with the latest maps.
Infact my garmin inspite of updates did not pick up the new mall around my house which has been around for over a year.
User interface is extremely easy.
Love the commands and prompts that speak clearly
Easy to view the next turn
Summary of route.
Lots of POIs
Covers a lot of in a small size.
Easy to mount and does not fall off everytime...I guess size and weight might have to do with it too..either ways..it stays put.
Love it.
