Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: The great GPS with loads of features Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this for my wife (not very good with electronics). She finds it very easy to navigate. I like the short-cut feature that puts up to six short-cuts at the touch of one icon, which is great because some features take time to get to. My wife especially likes the handsfree calling feature as well as the FM radio transmitter that can stream music, directions, and phone calls through the car's stereo. The handsfree feature is so clear that I couldn't tell that my wife was using it. I also like the expandable memory card slot, map correction, and an output jack for the AUX on my stereo (being able to hard-wire the TomTom to my stereo when there is too much FM interference). Personally, I think that Megellan has better map/POI software but I went with TomTom because of the Buddy feature. Since I own a TomTom Rider and go on frequent rides that take me to unpopulated areas, my wife can now send messages and see my location using her TomTom... helps lessen the 'worry' factor of me riding a motorcycle.
Customer Review: Great GPS for the price! Summary: 5 Stars
The GO 720 is a great GPS unit and as other reviewers have mentioned it is essentially the same unit as the GO 730 after you connect it your PC and update it with the included TomTom Home software. I also had to contact TomTom support to request an updated map and found it to be a pleasant support experience. I sent an online request with a copy of my receipt and after a couple of hours TomTom support sent me a response with a free copy of the most recent map.
As far as user interface and routing go, TomTom and Garmin are generally regarded as the best by most GPS review sites. It seems to be a personal preference. There will inevitably be a route that one will prove better than the other, so you will have to live with that.
The GO 720 also has the option to add an external antenna and install the unit in the dashboard console if you like. Most GPS units in this price range do not have this option.
Overall, I am very pleased with this unit and give it five stars.
Customer Review: Excellent purchase Summary: 5 Stars
I have had other GPS units for both driving and hiking, but needed an upgrade for the car. After comparing with the Garmin brands, decided to get the TomTom GO 720. It is extremely easy to use; the user interface is very intuitive. Bluetooth feature and FM transmitter work as expected. Mapping, while not always finding the route I would take in my local area, does the job perfectly. I am very happy with my purchase.
Two things you must get after purchase. First are screen protectors to prevent scratching. Simple solution is go to the local office store and buy the ones for palm pilots. You get 5 to a pack for a pretty low price and they are just about the same size screen (a tad bit smaller). Second is a case. I would suggest a hard-shell type.
UPDATE:
After using this for a bit, the re-routing function is the fastest I have ever seen. Miss a turn, it knows and suggests a reroute almost instantly. A really great feature.
Customer Review: Great product, even better price Summary: 5 Stars
The TomTom GO 720 is a very user friendly unit. It's easy to program and the screen is a good size. This is my 2nd purchase of the GO 720 and Amazon's price was far better than what I paid for my first. I got this one for my son to use when traveling. I've used mine for a couple of years and it's always given me the correct directions and the voice is very clear and pleasant. I've used it in cities, like DC, where it's easy to get turned around with all the 1-way streets, but the GO has never let me down. I also like the POI (point of interest) feature if we're trying to find a restaurant or a mall near our destination. It's also great if you need to detour around traffic, as soon as you go off course, the GO recalculates another route you can follow. Just used it last week on the NJ turnpike, traffic was at a standstill, got off at the next exit and the GO came up with another route for us to follow. I wouldn't leave home without it!
Customer Review: TomTom better than nuvi Summary: 5 Stars
I tried out the Garmin nuvi 760 since I read that it's maps were better but have since sent it back. It did not have as many customization options (no John Cleese voice). And it's display does not show the small roads that you are passing as well as the TomTom 920. Of course I have previous experience with the TomTom software interface since I have used it with my Treo PDA for years. I was surprised that the TomTom was getting satellites indoors! The form factor is better with the TomTom as well. The rounded back fits nicely in your hand, while the nuvi is a rectangular block. The nuvi suction cup with locking lever for the windshield mount does seem more robust but the TomTom suction cup looks like it will do the job and I found an add on vent mount option for the TomTom which I like for business trips. I would have gotten the 720 but wanted the EU maps for future trips so I got the 920.
