Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TomTom GO 720 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: Works as adevertised Summary: 5 Stars
I hear complaints on this Tom-Tom. I read them all and I bought it anyway. It works, it has new maps and it is dead nuts with directions.
Here are some of the complaints I had no problem with..
1. I purchaced new. Because this product is almost 2 years old alot of them have been sitting in a warehouse. So the maps are old. The maps are so old that Tom-tom home (software you get with the GPS) will not update them unless you pay X dollars. Howver all you have to do is call Tom-Tom and you will get the free update easy as can be.
2. Tom-tom home CD is not a receint copy of the software and will not update. Well when you plug the GPS in it will as if you want to run the CD or just download the software from the web. Just select download from the web and you will automaticly get the most receint copy.
3. It only has maps of Guam on it. The GPS comes with maps of north america and Guam. It ask you when you set it up what map you want to default. Well if you select guam... that is what you will get.
3. Radio transmitter works with MP3 files fine.... However it does not have the fidelty of a direct connection, that is the same is all FM transmitter devices regardless of the brand.
4. NO GPS at any price knows every entrance to every Dunkin-Doughnuts on the planet. Or show every single off road, Nor can they get a fix while you are in a parking garage wth 5 stories on concrete above you. If you don't realize you are in a parking garage, tunnel, or can't read an entrance sign when you are using it. You probably should not be driving anyway..
Great product...
Customer Review: Great Product - Not so great fuel prices service Summary: 5 Stars
The TomTom 720 is a great product. My wife and I find it very easy to use and have never had a problem getting to our destinations. It picks up the GPS signals fast and even in areas where there are large obstructions like in cities.
Even though we think this is a top notch product, I want to give other TomTom 720 users a heads-up regarding TomTom's new fuel prices service that just became available for the TomTom 720 in the United States.
I signed up for TomTom fuel prices at a cost of $14.95 per year. We downloaded the most up-to-date fuel prices from TomTom Home and went on a 45 min road trip to a local lake. We stopped at two gas stations that TomTom reported as the lowest price along the route. One was a Citgo station that TomTom reported was selling regular gasoline for $3.52 a gallon, which was incredible since our local Murphy gas station was going for $3.72. When we arrived at the Citgo, it was actually $3.79 - 27 cents more than TomTom stated! Also, it wasn't even the cheapest. We saw an Exxon priced at $3.71 as we were driving along the highway. We gave it another shot and we ended up at a RaceWay that TomTom stated was going to be $3.60. It was $3.74. Even when you download the latest fuel prices they appear to be days old. With a service like fuel prices, anything older than 6 hours should be considered stale data. The TomTom fuel prices service does not scan and report the gas station prices anywhere near fast enough to allow for proper functioning. Although this concept is a great idea, I would not recommend this service at this time.
Customer Review: Great Value for $200. Summary: 5 Stars
Because this GPS has been around for a while, the hype has settled and the price has therefore lowered significantly. It has amazing features that the most expensive GPS units offer. The newer model, the GO 730, has the new IQ routes and lane guidance features, however i don't think that these features alone would be worth the extra $100 (50% of the units cost!). The handsfree works perfectly with my verizon LG phone. It connects automatically when I turn the unit on and I can keep my phone in my pocket. The navigation works well and the speaker is loud. The screen is bright and clear. I love that this unit allows you to add POI's and make map corrections right on the device.
There are only a few negatives about the device. First, the suction cup mount isn't sturdy enough. I have tried using it on the windshield and the dashboard mount and on both the unit has fallen down while I was driving on a bumpy road. The only other major negative for me is that the unit has no capability of automatically turning on when I start the car.It has the ability to automatically turn off when the car is powered off, but some Garmin units can supposedly do turn on automatically and it would make life much easier not having to hassle with holding the on button down to turn the GPS on if I am in a hurry. Lastly, there is no volume control button to change the volume. If you want to change the volume, you must go through several menu pages. I have to press preferences, then speaker preferences, then volume, then change the volume. This can be to difficult to do while driving.
Customer Review: Intuitive Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned the TomTom GO 720 for a couple of months and I have zero complaints. This is my first automotive GPS and I do not have experience with any other brands (other than testing them at the store). The 720 bluetooth feature works with my Samsung A720 cell phone even though the website said that it was not compatible. The directions are accurate. The speaker is loud. The menus are feature rich and intuitive. The recalculating time for off route directions is 5-30 seconds. This is a very good deal and I think that you'd be hard pressed to justify spending the extra money for the Garmin equivalent. No GPS is perfect and I'm sure that some of the faults that folks have with this unit may be legitimate, but I have yet to encounter any of my own and am completely satisfied with my purchase (I paid $499 for this 2 months ago). I have yet to take advantage of the Map Share program, perhaps because I have not encountered any deficiencies in directions. I do sync it up with TomTom Home software and keep it updated. You can choose the trust level of your map updates through the software. This is something other reviewers have failed to clarify. If you do not want to download map corrections from just anybody then you do not have to. You can choose to to only download TomTom verified corrections. Bottom Line: This is a quality product that offers all of the features of its competitors at a more affordable price.
Customer Review: Gets you where you need to go. Summary: 5 Stars
Even though all of my friends who have GPSs went with Garmin products, I decided to purchase this TomTom because it was a great value. I'm extremely happy with this product, and haven't even scratched the surface on all of the features that TomTom provides.
What really sold me on the TomTom was the combination of bluetooth compatibility and the TomTom MapShare technology. With the bluetooth setup, I can legally take calls while driving. With MapShare, I can keep my map of the area up-to-date.
I've taken my TomTom on a few longer car trips, and it's performed relatively well. As with any GPS, one shouldn't accept its word as the be-all end-all truth--there were a few times it tried to send me in a wrong direction, or took me off a main road only to tell me to turn right around and get back on. But, I have to say, it certainly did better than I would have done by myself, trying to figure out directions or navigate a map while pulled over on the side of the road. (Also, partially, it is my own fault for not updating my maps as often as I should!)
