I received, installed (using the red, white, yellow cables) and tried this converter box without having an antenna. As I suspected, I got nothing. I then made an antenna using speaker wire and an RF adapter. This time I got all of the strong channels in my area (see DTV.GOV). The reception is GREAT! Imagine, speaker wire: amazing!
I have only two small complaints. Sometimes I have to press the keys on the remote more than once to do what I want. Also, (and I'm not sure if this is a problem) the screen size can change for different channels. However, the remote has a button (Aspect) that can adjust the size.
This box might not have all the extra bells and whistles other boxes have (I don't know, this is my first and only box), but it gets a GREAT pictue and good sound.

I purchased this box based on its strong rating from Consumer reports as a good convertor box. After going to Best Buy and noticing they only carried an APEX for 69.99 I came to Amazon. The box is small so it does'nt take alot of space. It receives all the channels in my area using just rabbit ears. The picture is very clear. The menu and setup where easy to configure and scan the channels. In fact it was easier than my Sharp Hd Tv was to set up. My biggest gripe is needing to use 2 remotes since this unit cant be configured to turn off the TV. I also noticed that sometimes theres some static in the sound but it is minor and could be from the age of the tv. I am very happy with this box and just ordered a second one. I bought a Tivax STB-T9, a clone of the Tivax STB-T8 without analog pass-through capabilities, to join a Zenith converter box in my household. Other than ease of use, at which the Zenith wins hands down, the Tivax offers a superior picture quality and a friendlier remote control. On balance the Tivax is better by a slight margin. But I would not hesitate in recommending either.
For those who have yet to purchase a converter box let me assure you the picture quality produced by these converter boxes GREATLY exceed what is produced by even the best analog broadcast. The Tivax produces near DVD-like picture quality. To me, analog broadcast are more in line with what you get from a VCR.
Bottom line: get your $40 coupon and buy a Tivax.

After much research and review reading, I jumped in and took a chance on the Tivax STB-T8 converter box, then came the search for an antenna. More research and review reading, but felt pretty positive about the one I chose. I got the PHILIPS SDV2210/17 INDOOR VHF/UHF/FM/HDTV ANTENNA, and so far they work pretty good together. The instructions that came with the Tivax helped me to get everything hooked up properly, and believe me when I say God was watching over me, because I am not in any way electronically inclined, so for me getting the right box and antenna was a miracle. I can only speak for myself, but I suggest anyone looking for the right box or antenna,just jump in there and take a chance, follow your intuition and maybe say a prayer, that's the best bet.Customer Review: Look Great, Good Price, Hope They Work

I bought two of these Tivax STB-T8 D-to-A converters, mostly paid for by the U.S. Government coupons furnished by us taxpayers. I have cable TV, but when the winds blow (and we do have the occassional hurricane here in FL), the cable is the second thing to go out - right after the power. So, I have a generator, and a TV, but when the power's back on, bhe cable isn't, so it's time to haul out the antennas for each TV. That's when I'm going to need these converters if I ever want to find out when the cleaning crew will be in my neighborhood (and how FEMA is doing). When the time ever comes, and we really need these converters, I sure hope they work. But, until then, they give me a sense of security, and they look nice next to my emergency water supply.
