Customer Review: The Best TiVo Yet, and by default the Best DVR Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently upgraded from a Series 2 Single tuner TiVo to the TiVo HD. I held off until now because I didn't have an HDTV. Once I got the HDTV the Series 2 standard def just wasn't cutting it on 55 inches. An HD DVR became a necessity. As far as I was concerened there was no option but to get another TiVo. I didn't go Series 3 because it seams like not much more for more than twice the price.
TiVo HD has exceeded my expectations from the start. Getting setup with a cable card was as easy as pulling the M-Card I already had out of my TV and plugging it into my TiVo. Done. Flawless.
This is my first dual-tuner dvr and the TiVo HD handles it so smoothly you don't even realize it's recording more than one thing at a time.
It supports up to 1080i which is the limit of my TV so the lack of 1080p isn't an issue. Especially since as far as I know there is no TV in 1080p. (could be wrong)
The picture quality is as good as my HD cable has ever looked. And the 20 hrs of hd storage hasn't proved to be a limitation yet. If it becomes a problem come fall I can always pick up the My DVR expander.
I'm not even going to mention all the features that have always been in a TiVo. Don't go with the cable company's dvr. Do yourself a favor. Pick up TiVo HD.

Customer Review: Wonderful consumer product

Yes monthly Tivo service is more expensive than a Comcast supplied DVR service. The $10-15monthly premium is the best money I ever spent.

I love my Tivo. We have had this model for close to 2yrs now. It is the single best electronic device I've ever bought. Usually the promises & features tempered by the difficulty of implementation and technical problems- read wireless networking and securing it.

We have 2 of these Tivos and they were the simplest devices to add to our home network. One box is wired in and the other is wirelessly connected. The 45hr capacity was a concern, at first. But because these were so flippin' simple to add to the PC, laptop, and router network we effectively have limitless capacity.

Currently, I have 250 DVD movies available, about 150hrs of TV, plus Netflix and Amazon VOD either on a PC HDD or locally on the 2 Tivos. Due to this networking simplicity I would not suggest buying the standalone external storage drives that plug into the Tivo. Heck, the Tivo software even converts this stored content to iPod file format so this all becomes portable too!

I haven't even talked about the dual tuner feature which is great. How about getting your podcasts, mp3s, family pics and videos on your flat-screen TVs!

Customer Review: First time Tivo user
Summary: 5 Stars

I just got my Tivo HD all set up. The people at Tivo are very friendly and helpful. I spent about 40 minutes on the phone one evening with a Tivo employee just to make sure I had purchased everything I needed to get the box up and running. My cable company had no problems installing the cable cards into the box.

While I've had some quirks, it is running smoothly now. I had a problem getting some of the channels to show up, but then a few minutes later they were back up again. I had a message saying I couldn't use an hdmi cable to set up to the Tivo due to some sort of licensing agreement. I think this was a problem with how I was connecting the system.

Tivo sold me a wireless adapter, which I am returning because I'm not using it at all. I prefer to have things hardwired so I am running ethernet in my house to connect directly to all my devices that use internet.

It does take some getting used to, if you come from a normal cable subscription with a typical dvr box. However, the features on Tivo can't be beat. The recommendations and different options are really nice. I've got Tivo 2 go functioning perfectly. I am a Mac user and bought the Roxio Toast 8 software to make Tivo 2 go function. It is smooth and easy to use.

Customer Review: BUY TIVO HD! Then, cancel your cable TV!
Summary: 5 Stars

TIVO HD is amazing! I am new to TIVO and now have 3 HD units. The picture was so wonderful through TIVO HD with only an antenna that I chose to cancel my cable TV. Yes, I know I will miss ESPN and all of the other cable TV channels that I watch like..... well, I guess that's the only cable channel I ever watched! So I asked myself, why pay over $100/month for cable TV?

I you live near a major metro area (I am 19 miles from the Philly antennas) and you are thinking about ditching cable but you are worried about picture quality - GO FOR IT! You won't regret it! And you can spend the $1200 a year you save on cable bills on DVD's of all those old sitcoms that you may miss without cable, or even buy newer shows on Amazon Unbox.

Hook-up was a snap. I was worried about placing an antenna on the roof, so I didn't. Instead, I bought 3 antennas (see the product link) and put them behind the TV. The antennas are not too big and very lightweight. They are about the size of an open textbook. Since the antenna is inexpensive, I would recommend purchasing as many as you need (why risk falling off the roof?).

Customer Review: Strong product

After many years of using a ReplayTV 3000 and later a 4500 I made the move to a TiVo S3 a couple years ago. It's operation has be smooth and stable. A year later I added a 2nd S3 in a different room. Both have been rock solid with zero issues. I have added external drives to both of them and regularly use the Netflix streaming video feature.

There are really only two features I continue to miss from the ReplayTV boxes. The first is automatic commercial advance which is the feature that got ReplayTV sued out of existence by the entertainment industry. That one is never going to appear again for obvious reasons. The second is deep global searches that to find Season Premiers, Series Premier, Season Finales, Series Finales, films by star rating, films by age rating, etc., etc.

The aftermarket cottage industry that has grown up with TiVo DVR's deserves a mention as well. Several outfits offer larger replacement drives, salvaged power supplies, main boards etc. IMO the best tech support comes from these third parties as well as the forums devoted to them. I'm not saying TiVo doesn't have a responsibility to support their product, I'm just saying that I learned with the ReplayTV product that the common issues are well known and easy to fix.
