Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TiVo TCD652160 HD Digital Video RecorderCustomer Review: Simply Amazing! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this box after switching from Verizon FIOS to Time Warner cable. As owners of two Series 2 DVRs sitting in a couple of our bedrooms in our house, we decided that we had to go to the Tivo HD DVR in our entertainment room after about 20 minutes of experiencing our new HD DVR from the cable company.
Once we received the DVR from Amazon a day later, we had the cable company show up with our new Cable Cards. It took about two hours because the technician wasn't sure what to do with them. After we finally got the signal in through the Tivo, I was very happy to have a Tivo in our main TV viewing area. The features are relatively the same as the Series 2 DVRs but the main advantages were the dual tuners and, of course, HD. I eventually purchased the Western Digital WDG1S5000VN 500GB My DVR Expander eSATA so that we can add more recording capacity and had it the next day from Amazon. The extra space really made the difference for us. The Tivo Recommendations feature which allows your Tivo to record things you might like is one of our favorites. The expanded space on our new Tivo HD gives on average about 100 extra shows that we normally wouldn't catch because we don't really watch live TV anymore.
In all, I have no regrets in getting the Tivo HD DVR and would highly recommened this device for those people who want to get away from the lousy HD DVRs supplied by cable and satellite companies (unless, of course, they supply you with a Tivo).
Customer Review: Best thing since sliced bread.... Summary: 5 Stars
I've been a Tivo user for years, going all the way back to the Series 1. My trusty Series 2 DT was doing just fine, except since I got an HDTV it just wasn't doing it for me anymore, I've gotta have my HD goodness!
Enter the TivoHD! When the original Series 3 came out I balked at the $799 price tag. Needless to say I was a happy camper when I saw that a reasonably priced HD capable Tivo was coming out.
If you've ever used a Tivo, then the TivoHD is exactly as you remember, except it can now record HD programming. If you haven't used a Tivo before, you don't know what you're missing! A Tivo isn't just a DVR, its miles beyond! Tivo offers the most user friendly interface out there, so easy my mom can use it!(True story) It also allows me to do things like schedule recordings from the Internet when I'm away from the house, transfer recordings to my PC, and download movies or TV shows from Amazon if I choose.
The one negative to this product isn't really a knock against Tivo, it's more of a knock against cable companies. For the TivoHD to have full functionality, it requires the use of cable cards from your cable company. For some reason it can take the cable company a few tries to get them working right. I personally had to have the cable guy come out twice before everything was setup right, but once it was right it's been great ever since.
The positives far outweigh the negatives for this product. I highly recommend it to anyone that's considering one.
Customer Review: Thank the Lord for TiVo Summary: 5 Stars
We switched to the horribly unintuitive COX DVR 18 months ago, since our original TiVo couldn't record HD channels. After a lot of cable frustration and some penny-pinching, Santa finally brought us this TiVo TCD652160. I hooked it up before the COX guy arrived to install a MultiStream CableCard into the unit. Easy breezy.
It's fantastic, great to be back using one of the most intuitive interfaces and remotes ever developed. The TiVo seems more proactive than I remember about recording suggestions it think I might like - and it's grabbing good stuff.
The Netflix Instant Queue integration is magical. Even through the TiVo 802.11g dongle, movies are streaming from my netflix account at a higher quality than they were to my XBOX 360, with fewer interruptions.
Anyway, well worth it. Now that we have a baby and spend a bit more time on the couch (breastfeeding, etc) it's great to be able to watch good stuff, avoid live TV, and skip commercials easier. Plus, my cable bill is now $15 lower per month. Only negative is that there's sometimes a little screen flicker whenever the unit changes video modes (programs record in 1080, but TiVo menus seem to be in 720).
The DVR from your cable company may seem to have some of the same features, but it's like comparing an iPhone to a Samsung touchscreen phone. TiVo has perfected all of the little details (feel of the remote, sound effects, the way the play cursor jumps back when you stop fast forwarding. It's luxurious.
Customer Review: My love relationship with TiVo Summary: 5 Stars
Wow TiVo, where have you been all my life? Actually, I've never been one to watch much TV (hate senseless commercials, etc), but the user friendly interface on TiVo is *REALLY* well thought out and easy to master. Perhaps I'm a bit of a techie, but I didn't have any problems getting the unit setup complete with the wireless WiFi, additional 500GB MyDVR, etc. Oh, I did make the mistake of picking up two M-Cards from Comcast when I only needed to install one (only two S-Cards are needed if you go that route); at any rate the first M-Card went belly-up after 12 hours (typical Motorola infant mortality) so I popped in the second one and had Comcast re-register it to the new serial number.
I had no idea of the TiVo's functionality, like downloading podcasts/videocasts, ability to download tens of thousands of movies from Amazon Unbox, etc. Still, after reading the litany of possible technical problems loading TiVo desktop software on my Personal Computer (you'll see the myarid list of possible snafus when you try to install it), I decided not to install it at this time - besides the TiVo desktop has a 5GB footprint and many more for each movie (especially if it's HD). But I can't see that much of a benefit watching videocasts on my big High-Def TV at this time - perhaps after TiVo gets all the kinks out of the Desktop application, I'll eventually download it (hate to be on the bleeding edge). Otherwise, this is one slick puppy everyone should enjoy!
Happy Trails, Michael
Customer Review: Greate replacement for the FIOS HD STB Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this to replace the motorola FIOS STB and I absolutely love it. A word for people who want to use this with FIOS: A lot of the verizon FIOS technicians haven't done an M-Card installation before. They will likely miss a few steps requiring a call to Verizon. In my case, the technician put the card in the system but didn't activate it. I had to call verizon tech support and get it activated. A special shout out to Rashad, the FIOS tech who figured out the missing step and called back to verify I had service.
I have the TIVO connected to the network through a powerline adapter. I didn't want to deal with the hassles of a wireless adapter in an entertainment center. Watching youtube videos over the network was a breeze. I would have tried the amazon HD service if it didn't come hobbled with the ridiculous DRM restrictions. Why do I have to finish watching a movie in 24 hrs once I've started watching it? Why can't they make a downloaded version the same as a blockbuster rental?
I also got the TiVo desktop software(the 25$ version). It's great if you want to watch your home videos on your TV through the TiVO. The 25$ version can convert your downloaded videos to the iPod format but I've had nothing but problems with this. The sound and video are out of synch and the video freezes after 10 minutes of so.
If you're getting the TiVO HD, you should consider adding hard disk space to your home computer and getting the DVR expander to add storage to the TiVO.
