Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TiVo TCD648250B Series3 HD Digital Media RecorderCustomer Review: Tivo will change the way you watch TV Summary: 5 Stars
It really will you know. No really, I didn't believe it at first either.
3 years ago, I acquired a series two, single tuner Tivo, with lifetime membership from a workmate for $50. He had gone HD and couldn't use it anymore, and being the kind of over paid tech geek he was, he just gave it up.
It changed the way we watched TV. No more worrying about schedules, no more sitting through more commercials than show. Online scheduling. TivoToGo on my laptop for travelling.
When we purchased a big screen HDTV, I was getting bummed with the old Tivo, and wanted to go HD. I investigated the Comcast HD DVR offering, and after using it for a while, I realised that the thing that made a Tivo a Tivo was the interface, and all the other Tivo goodies. Sure, it was "just a DVR", but it just didn't do it.
I paid over $600 for mine, and it pained me. However, it was worth it. Really really worth it. I dumped the Comcast box, moved to a couple of Cablecards.
Will Tivo change the way you watch TV? I believe it will. It did for us. We're busy professionals, without much time for schedules, Tivo freed us from those.
Customer Review: Tivo reigns supreme! Summary: 5 Stars
Tivo really does make watching and managing recorded TV shows a pleasure again!
After having to put up with a comcast box in order to get HD channels I am finally back with Tivo - and thank goodness for that. I can't begin to describe just how much of an improvement Tivo has over its competition. Additionally, I had no trouble in ordering the 2 cable cards needed from Comcast to allow us to get our HD through out Tivo series 3 box.
The new box itself is very nice looking with a lovely display at the front which details which programs are currently being recorded. Controls are as intuitive and simple as before with an almost identical remote. This remote is an improvement on the series 2 version as the buttons give a much better feel and function. The remote is also 'photosensitive' and enables its backlit function only when ambient lighting is dim.
Tivo customer service is also the best i have experienced which really makes you feel that they care about their customers, unlike many cable/satellite providers i have delt with in the past.
A Great product - highly recommended!
Customer Review: Delighted Summary: 5 Stars
Like a lot of TiVo owners, we were disappointed watching the 480i output from our old Series 2 through our hot new 1080p HD set. We used to switch back and forth between the TiVo for recorded shows and a direct feed from the cable box for live HD viewing. With our new TiVo Series 3, that's history. So is the cable box, for that matter. The two integrated CableCards with dual tuners work seamlessly, jumping back and forth as needed between the two tuners so that we can watch one channel while another is recording, or record two different shows simultaneously. The picture quality is a quantum leap over the Series 2, even on standard definition channels, although to my eyes it appears slightly noisier than the straight cable box feed. And the bigger hard drive means plenty of room for those ginormous HD recordings. Not sure whether it's the new hardware, or all the recent TiVo service updates, but this box seems a bit less stable than our old Series 2, requiring occasional reboots to unfreeze it. But overall the TiVo Series 3 has become even more indispensable in our household than its predecessor.
Customer Review: How can you live without Tivo? Summary: 5 Stars
I have been a Tivo owner for over 5 years, but last month I left the fold and decided to go with the cable company's Scientific Atlanta DVR. Boy, was that a mistake! After several cable company visits and a lot of frustration, I decided to go back to the Tivo. My wife and I both love it! Several of the features we love to use are:
1. Sending requests to record shows using the internet
2. Streaming music to the Tivo
3. Downloading movies from the Tivo to our computer so that we can burn DVDs (great for trips!)
4. Renting movies from Amazon.com without leaving the house
5. Much, much more!
The only issue with the Series 3 HD Tivo was the cable cards. It took the cable company (Brighthouse Cable) three trips to get it right. They originally were trying to use one dual channel card, but they were unable to get it to work. If you run into the same problem, ask your cable company to use two single channel cards. According to Tivo, the multi channel cards will work with their latest software release.
Customer Review: Best DVR on the planet bar none Summary: 5 Stars
I am a long time Tivo user. First had the Tivo series 1. Then had the DirectTivo unit. Switched to cable company and got their dreadful motorola box. Couldn't take it. The motorola was buggy, slow, quirky and the interface was dreadful. Having used Tivo before and still using my Tivo 1 on another non HD set I had to jump for the Tivo Series 3.
The Tivo Series 3 is just awesome. Got it for $650 and took advantage of the Lifetime special transfer from my Tivo series 1 unit to avoid monthly charges forever. The interface and features are the best out there. Setup was a breeze as seems to be always the case with Tivo's. My wife says it is the best $650 we ever spent. We are both so glad to get rid of that horrible Motorola DVR.
We just got a new HD set for our bedroom so I will be purchasing my 2nd Tivo Series 3.
I highly recommend this to anyone thinking of buying a DVR. Even if your cable operator gives you theirs for free the Tivo Series 3 is well worth the money.
