Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TiVo TCD648250B Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder

Customer Review: There is no turning back...
Summary: 5 Stars

The Series 3 box is a more expensive unit, but they've gotten the price down into the sane range. It includes the upgraded remote, which is a learning remote as well as a programmable one. It also has the basic buttons on the front of the unit (nice feature if your remote wanders), but it still has a very clean/sleek/uncluttered look.

My TiVo is the primary (and only) tuner I have. I bought a tunerless television/monitor, which helped keep the price down. TiVo is simply the best DVR out there. If you read reviews of other DVR's you'll see the lowest reviews coming from former TiVo owners. Nobody else has been able to match the elegance of TiVo. It's a pretty strong endorsement when people are opting-out of a free DVR offer from their cable or satellite company and paying for these instead.

Beware: you will be hooked. Yep, I'm gonna be stuck paying them a subscription for the rest of my life (or buying a lifetime subscription), but it's sooooo worth it. I'm actually saving money because I've dropped my cable and am just filling my TiVo with free over-the-air HD broadcast network programming.

This comment has been in many reviews, but it's probably worth repeating: this TiVo cannot control a separate tuner box, so you cannot use it with a dish. You can get one or two cable cards and use them, though.

Customer Review: Tivo Series 3
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the TiVo Series 3 because I wanted the extra capacity without having to add an additional hard drive. I can still TiVo shows in standard definition and be able to access them over the network on any of the other TiVos that are in the house. It's my understanding that you can't do that once you add the compatible hard drive. I wasn't sure how much of a difference the HD capabilty would be, but I can't imagine going back now.
I love being able to TiVo from two different channels at the same time. I have made use of that several times in the short time I have had the unit. I did have one of my shows last week that had started TiVoing and got interrupted, but last week was not a normal week, so I don't know if I ended up canceling the show or if it got dropped. I'll have to keep an eye on that and see if it happens again.
Overall, I have been happy with the Series 3 TiVo. I had a little trouble with the cable cards, but that was the fault of the first installer (who was working while he was sick) from Mediacom. The second guy knew exactly what was needed and made sure he had everything with when he came out. So far everything seems to be working great. I'll keep an eye on the program dropout and see if it happens again. Like I said, last week was not a normal week weather wise, work wise, life wise.

Customer Review: Simply Amazing
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the first DVR of any type that I have ever owned, so I can't really compare it to the other DVR's on the market. I can say that I have been overwhelmingly impressed by the ease of use, the features, picture quality, sound, really everything. I can honestly say that it has changed the way my wife and I watch TV. We got so used to video taping the things we were unable to watch that we kind of forgot how much video and sound quality we were really missing out on, plus the fact that we can tape two things and watch something we have already recorded comes in handy once our baby goes to sleep.

I love the fact that you can schedule recordings from any computer online, I have actually used this feature twice to tape things I didn't know were going to be on TV but were going to air before I got home from work.

The only thing I would complain about other than the price is that it isn't compatible with the Tivo-to-go setup they had previously. I really wish I could record things and transfer them to my IPod to take them along when travelling or even to work. I think they need to investigate adding this feature back in somehow.

Overall we have been very satisfied and I would recommend this product to anyone.

Customer Review: Worthy upgrade - I love my TiVo!
Summary: 5 Stars

I simply don't know if I could ever be completely content watching TV without my TiVo. This is my second one; my first was a 40hour model I had for 5 years. This one ... blows it away, obviously. It was nice that it actually came with a HDMI cable unlike my high end Sony DVD player. I never run out of storage. The online features are great (YouTube/Netflix/Amazon Video/Music Choice music videos/TiVoToGo) and it has a connection for ethernet which means no loss of speed since I happen to have my cable modem/router in the right spot. Of course, wireless is still an option. I LOVE the new remote, even if it does take 4 AAA batteries and consumes them a bit quicker than the original remote - but for the backlighting feature, I'm ok with that. My ONLY complaint? Series 3 requires TWO cable cards to provide dual tuner function, and this is frustrating, but I can deal with that: I just wish they made this more clear. AND, I wish Comcast and other cable companies would get their crap together and make it easier to get those cards without fighting them over not needing 'professional installation.'

How can you not appreciate the ability of the TiVo to actually stop fast forwarding when you want it to compared to the DVR's offered by Comcast?

Customer Review: Fabulous. Easy. Familiar. Fantastic.
Summary: 5 Stars

If you have HD, this is the unit. All the familiar features of TIVO with the incredible quality of high-definition make this the best dvr yet. If you have used TIVO before, this will be very familiar, like an old friend. If not, be prepared to fall in love.

The installation process was horrible - after five house calls by my cable compnay techs, I fired them and signed up with another provider. Not every cable company is familiar with this technology, don't support the cable cards, and have buggy installations (losing half of high def channels).

I run a wireless Microsoft router which required a call to TIVO support to enter the IP addresses. The unit will not automatically detect the internet settings to run the network. Finding the network adapter was also difficult. I finally found a store which had the TIVO brand for sale. TIVO said that third parties made compatible devices but I couldn't find them.

Now that everything is installed, TIVO is working and is far superior to the other DVR's I have seen and used. Being able to record two channels at once, expanded recording time, and the quality of high definition makes this worthwhile.
