Customer Review: Silent and efficient hard drive cooler

When this fan arrived I realized it was longer than the old HDD fan I had installed in my system (similar to this one: Hard Disk Drive Cooler, which was about as quiet as a freight train) and I worried it wouldn't fit. However, my fears were unfounded, as it actually slid more easily into the 3.5" bay beneath my hard drive than the old one. I did make one mistake--at first I tried to attach this cooler to the hard drive itself, but the screws were too short. Another perusal of the instructions led me to screw the cooler directly into the drive cage, which worked perfectly. It now sits about a half-inch directly below the drive it cools. The 4-pin power cable is sturdily insulated and about 8" long, which was plenty length to get to an extra Molex PSU connector. When I fired up the computer I noticed that the blue LED was illuminated, but the fan wasn't moving. I initially thought I had a DOA unit until I realized that the power cable to my hard drive had been obstructing the blades. But, after correcting for my stupidity quotient by rerouting the HDD power cable, the fan immediately began to spin. Just as the marketing for this product says, it is completely silent, even in my already quiet system. Monitoring with HD Sentinel, I have observed that my HDD ceiling temp has dropped from about 47-48 Celsius to 37 under the highest load (heavy online gaming). Since the HDD bay is covered by my case, I can't see the blue LED at all, which is fine (it isn't overpowering anyway, as noted by a previous reviewer). My only regret is that I didn't buy another one for my backup drive (I could have gotten free shipping and more cooling!)
