I ordered one of these to use with my overheating external disk drive (no AC here!) for my desktop, but ended up trying it out by taking it on the road with my notebook. It is QUIET! The hard drive on my notebook is louder than this fan on low, and so far I haven't had to run it any higher to keep my normally hot-running notebook completely cool. It's kind of spooky, really, it works so well.
The fan speed knob is prominent enough that you don't need tiny hands to turn it, and turns smoothly enough that you'll find yourself casually adjusting the fan speed without even thinking about it. The stand is nice and springy, and has no trouble at all supporting the fan when it -is- turned on high. There's no blowing this fan over!
The other nice aspect of this fan is that it has a nice long cord and a wide enough range that it can be aimed to cover several devices at once -- including the notebook! Pair this one with an inexpensive USB hub to make sure you've got plenty of ports on hand, and you've got yourself an all-weather kit for your notebook that can take any heat.
I can't wait to get this home to use on my desktop and external hard drives!

I had been looking for a cooling system for my PS3 just to keep it quieter. I've read all the reviews of other attachable fans and even liquid systems. All the other fans have one main problem, they're so loud, which defeats the purpose for me and liquid is quite expensive and not too plausible. I find that the internal fans do a fine job of keeping the PS3 cool enough to work, but they can get loud in the 3 or 4 speed. I read that this fan was quiet and functional so I decided to try it.
For one it works great, better than I expected. It's definitely quiet and even on full it's not that bad. I just angle this fan towards my PS3 and it stays on the 2nd fan level even after 4-5 hours of playing. Stays quiet enough to watch movies without being distracting. Even gets back to level 1 if I turn the fan up which means this fan does a great job of cooling. Using the usb connection it's only on when my ps3 is on so I never have to touch it, very convenient. The the usb cord is so thin and the retractable cord keeps it out of the way.
Definitely recommend it. Great quality and features.

I got two of these. One to cool my laptop and the other to cool my external harddrives. You can connect them to anything with a usb port for power.
They come with a little dial that lets you determine the speed of the fan. I keep them at the lowest setting and they're barely audible (my laptop's fan makes more noise than these things). I would definitely recommend to anyone and the cool and geek factor is definitely there :)
The only problem I can think of is that I wish the dial knob on them had an option to turn them off. Like some old fans where you keep turning them to the left and it clicks off. Besides that they're fantastic.
They work aslong as whatever you have them connected to is on as they draw power from the usb port. So when my computer is off then the fans are off and upon boot the initialize and start to rotate.
Another thing that might be great to add to them is a filter so they don't blow dust everywhere and especially into what you have them pointed at. Wish they made a 120mm version.

Bought 3 fans. One for the equipment stack consists of the cable modem, the wireless router, and the network drive. The accumulated heat from having all these "heat makers" together had me looking for a quiet and reliable solution. The fan runs 24/7 and cools very quietly and effectively. The speed control allows a boost for those extra hot situations. The machines are no longer hot to touch. Another fan cools the Apple TV and the game console stack. The Apple TV is an always-on equipment that is hot all the time, again, the concern is the "accumulated" heat from having these hot machines placed close. The fan is also on all the time and its quiet operation allows it to be left plugged in and hardly a sound is heard especially when it is on slow.
The last unit sits next to my MacBook Pro. It keeps the "hot zone" next to the keyboard cool. The quiet operation allows it to be left running while I work with very low degree of noise pollution . I'm buying several as gifts to family and close friends who has the same issue with heat.
Customer Review: Great to cool my hot receiver in closed cabinet

I use this fan to cool down a Onkyo receiver inside my closed cabinet. I put it in the top of the receiver pushing hot air out of the cabinet, and it works great. I recommend buying a Smart Strip LCG4 Energy Saving Power Strip with Autoswitching Technology so when I turn off the receiver, the fan turns off automatically as well. I also had to buy a USB Wall AC Charger because the fan gets power from a USB source. The fan has a potentiometer, so you can select the fan speed, choosing a level which does not generate much noise and still works effectively.
Pros:
- pot to control fan speed level / noise level
- small, efficient, ideal to cool down audio equipment on closed cabinets
Cons:
- needs USB power (it can be an advantage if you're cooling down an equipment with USB out, like a PS3)
