Customer Review: Surprisingly easy to use calculator
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this calculator and also got the TI-89 Dummies book because I was intimated by what I had seen from this calculator and expected it to be hard to get used to with a steep learning curve. Immediately after receiving it, I loaded the four *included* Duracell AAA batteries (I wish I had known they were included) and went straight to my Probability & Statistics class. Even without ever touching a graphing calculator before (I used to do all my Math with a Casio scientific calculator), the interface felt almost second nature to me, and I say "almost" because I had to ask a friend a few questions regarding the way it gave me certain answers.

I highly recommend getting the TI-89 Dummies book, because it has eased me greatly at figuring out how to do certain advanced calculations without having to research too much on them (the ~280 pages manual included is not particularly helpful sometimes). Finally, I also love how all the connectivity cables I'll ever need are already included (that's a TI to TI cable and an USB TI to PC one).

Customer Review: Wow.

So today I just got my new TI-89 Titanium. Now, I've written a review for TI-89 way back in 1998 when I bought my first one and was impressed back then.

So, why go to TI-89 Titanium when I have a perfectly functional TI-89? Why not? I had the money, I got a pretty penny selling my used TI-89 in prestine shape, and I love toys. I'm an enginerd, it's what we do.

What floored me was when I turned it on. All the coveted programs I wanted for my TI-89 in undergrad school, but couldn't afford are now FREE and preloaded with the Titanium. Also, speed speed speed. You ever run a rootfinder equation with more than 4 outcomes? Well, TI-89 was sooooo slow. Powerful. But slow. It could take literally minutes, sometimes causing a lock-up. With the beefed up ROM, well, it's fast. Plus, turning it on, it looks like a PDA for mathematicians.

I guess it's not the greatest review because I just got it and played a little bit. If you are an engineer, you'll love it. If you're not, well, it's very powerful and you probably don't need it. Now, with all these improvements, I wish they would make it in color like Matlab or Maple. No real necessity, but it's just something for TI to think about.

Customer Review: For calculus and beyond, perfect! Anything below calculus, this is too much!

After using a TI-83 Plus calculator for the last 5 years, I decided to upgrade to the TI-89 Titanium. This calculator is unbelievable in its features and power. First of all, it is more suited for advanced math, such as calculus and beyond. This calculator is NOT meant for high schoolers who are taking algebra, geometry or trig classes. If you don't know what a derivative or an integral is, then save your money and buy a TI-84 instead. (Besides, I believe most high school math teachers ban the TI-89 on tests) This calculator can also run programs in its Flash memory, which can be downloaded from the TI website. A USB cable is included standard. TI has made the newly designed sliding cover much more secure than the old TI design (TI-83 plus, TI-86, TI-89 regular), whose sliding cover was not very secure and became looser over continued use. The cover is very hard to get off the first few times (I was almost afraid of breaking it off), but over time it has gotten easier. Switching over from the TI-83, the only problem I've encountered is the operation of this calculator is very different from the 83. The menus are different, the interface different, different buttons. It takes a while to get used to.

Hi, I go to Clark College. I have passed every one of my math classes with an A. I am taking Calculus I, which is my fourth math class in college and part of my major, which is Paper Science and Engineering.

My teachers usually want students to bring their graphing calculators to class, so the students can learn and succeed. My teachers also show students how to use calculators to solve problems, so the students can get their things done efficiently. However, I'm not allowed to use my calculator on some questions on the tests, but I can get most questions answered correctly. Also, my teacher sometimes mark me down for only relying on the calculator to get the correct answers without showing my work. For example, in College Algebra during Spring term 2007, my teacher marked me down on one of the finding roots with imaginary numbers questions on my second test because I didn't show my work, but I answered the question correctly.

With my calculator, I got a score of 100% on every one of my tests, including the final, in College Algebra. Also, in Trig, I aced every one of my tests, including the final. Therefore, I got an A in every one of my college level math classes.

Customer Review: Perfect for the Self-learner

I am currently studying Calculus on my own-yes, for fun-and I am not that good at basic algebra. All the hard stuff is easy for me,
but the algebra is really what I am studying, just in the form of calculus.
This calculator is perfect for just checking your answers on algebra homework.
If you need it for future classes, and you already know how to use it, you are that much farther ahead than anybody else!

It does have its drawbacks-you do have to take lessons from somebody with a clue on how to do basic things
as well as the difficult stuff-like how to get to the calculator part of it and solve a basic algebra problem-like this:
solve(0=2x-((x^2+1)^(1/2)),x)
When you put exactly that in the calculator, it solves for x, and you don't have to do it by hand.
It answers with 3^(1/2)/3 by the way.
But you have to know that in order to do square root, you have to put the number to the half power(as shown above).
It does get complicated, but it's fun! :) Highly recommended.

Thanks for looking-
