Customer Review: Essential for Calculus and beyond
Summary: 5 Stars

Once the essentials are learned in any field, its great to have a tool to do the busy work quickly. The Ti-89 calculator by Texas Instruments performs all the functions you'll need to do this busy work. Being able to use SmartText to display integrals, differentials, taylor series sums, etc. allow the user to clearly identify any mistakes. A lot of technology has been pumped into this little machine seeing as calculator programs are written using only the functions + - / X. There are many submenus's withen keys that are color coded for easy recognition as well as on-screen displays for menus. Dual menus are also handy for comparing graphs and calculations. Programming is a sinch with the instuction book and downloading programs is possible with the add-on cable. There are thousands upon thousands of programs written for math, economics, accounting, etc. that will allow the user to drastically expand the functionality of this calculator. 5 Stars.

Customer Review: Great.
Summary: 5 Stars

I must say that the TI-89 calculator is the best calculator currently available. The TI-89 is identical to the TI-92 Plus, except for that it comes in a vertical platform and it does not have the Geometry application. However, with the 89's flash memory, you will be able to obtain free downloads from the Internet to upgrade your calculator. Also, for a small charge, you will soon be able to download the CABRI-Geometry application for the 89, so the TI-89 is definetely a better purchase than the 92 (although it does not have the QWERTY keyboard, which in my opinion is worthless.) Some of the features of the 89:

* Statistics/List Editor (free app downloadable from ti.com) * Differential Equations * Symbolic Algebra/Calculus * Metric Units * Equation Solver * Function, Parametric, Polar Graphing * 3-D Graphing, Rotation, and Contours * Text Editor * Pretty Print (expressions appear exactly as they would on the chalkboard) ..and much more.

Customer Review: The best math tool ever
Summary: 5 Stars

As a math & physics major, I CANNOT overestimate the value of this tool!
In physics, I heavily rely on both fuction editing and unit analysis (REAL unit analysis - if you enter a quantity in Volts and then divide it by Ohms, it will tell you that your answer is in Amps! IT KNOWS THAT A VOLT/OHM is an AMP!) as well as the full range of built in functions (cross products, dot products, determinants, etc).
In math is where it kicks in heavy, though. I finished Calc 1,2 and 3 with the TI-89, and it is amazing how many answers on exams can be verified using the calculator! I have caught sooooo many errors (trivial and otherwise) by running my exam result through the calculator before handing the test in that I dont know how I ever got along without it.
If you are going to stop taking math after Calc 1, a TI86 is fine, but if you have any plans to move up to higher math/ physics/ chemistry/ biology, etc, BUY THIS NOW!!

Customer Review: I love this calc
Summary: 5 Stars

This calculator is worlds ahead of both the TI-83 and TI-86.

For the most part, the calculator is pretty intuitive. After 10 or 15 minutes, you get the hang of it and can pretty much do everything you could do with the other TIs.

Of course, that's just the tip of the iceberg. The CAS (computer algebra system) is great. You can take derivatives or integrals of functions of one (or more) variables. If you don't have caluclus, you can factor or expand expressions, which is great for avoiding tedious algebra.

If you're into programming, you can find some great resources for programming it in C, or use the BASIC-like language built in to the calculator. With the built-in language, you can create both programs and functions that return values just like built-in functions.

I feel that I must address a common complaint. I didn't notice the screen being tilted or at an angle, even upon close inspection.

Customer Review: Easier than most make it sound!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm going to get right to the point: this is a great calculator. I've read hundreds of reviews prior to my purchase of this item, and nearly all of them have something to say on its difficulty of use.

What I think gets most users is its new interface: scrolling menus (like those of a Windows operating system) and pop-up windows. Its not that this calculator is difficult to use, but it reqires more keypresses per operation than the TI-83, -85 (which I owned previously) or the -86. In my opinion, a few extra keypresses here or there is well worth the conveniance that this calculator brings to the class room:

It does everything. This little guy will save you *so* much time in any facet of math or science in which you use it. Buy one if you're a serious student (late high school through highly advanced university work)or professional. You won't regret it.
