Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Texas Instruments BA II Plus Professional Financial CalculatorCustomer Review: Pleasantly surprised Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this to replace the previous BA I had used for years but which had been stolen.
At first impression was a little disapointed. It is much bigger than the previous TI I had and does not have the hard protective cover. I had been used to one handing the older model during input.
However, after about ten minutes I was pleasantly surprised. This is a high quality machine. Set it on a desk and it is stationary, input is very easy, and the display is highly visible from several angles.
Bottom line looks and feels solid and stable. Some have commented on the input keys stiffness. To me they feel solid and I have not had a problem with mis-entry.
Calculations are quick and easy to read. Only possible slip-up is that this machie has the ability to accept more variables so there is a little more learning curve than the older models.
In conclusion I am learing to one-hand it and I do like the engraved BA II PLUS logo on the front just a little touch of class on an already nice machine.
Customer Review: I don't see anything wrong with this thing at all. Summary: 5 Stars
I have never owned anything more than your basic calculator except a graphing calculater I used in high school 15 years ago so I don't have much to compare it to but it works great. After reading how to do the caluculations, I have no problem remembering how to use the functions. I didn't know if I would need the added features the professional give you but I bought it anyways because the price wasn't that much more. The very first homework assignment I had, I used one of those advanced features not on the regular BAII calculator so I feel it was definitely the right choice. Like other reviews I have read, I do agree that they should send it in a hard case instead of the leather pouch. I don't really know what protection that provides. I hard case would probably save the calculator from button damage that it could sustain in any backpack or bag. Overall a great purchase. No complaints at all (besides the case) !!
Customer Review: Buy this or any other TI or Sharp over the HP 12C Summary: 5 Stars
Why does the CFA exam require this calculator? Probably because in order to use the HP 12C properly you need to bring the manual with you. If you don't have the manual with you at all times when using the 12C you can get the wrong answer. Take the example in T. Hope's review, but try calculating using n= a payment with a decimal place, such as 24.5. Then try the same thing on an HP 12C. Oops, you don't get the same answer. That is because the HP12C doesn't allow you to enter payment terms with decimal places in the normal manner, even though it looks like you can. You need the manual to do it correctly. The real problem is that you don't even know when you need the manual. If you enter 24.5 the same way as 24 on the HP 12C, you won't get the right answer. Any TI or Sharp financial calculator however will give you the right answer. What other surprises are in store for those who use the 12C?
Customer Review: Major improvement from BAII Plus Summary: 5 Stars
Compared to BAII plus, it is much heavier with the metal cover. Too light is a disadvantage for the old model. Now, this one won't jump around when you punch the keys. The pros of HP 12C says that one is like a tank. This one is just like a samller tank, maybe.
The display is another major improvement. The view is clear and won't change for different angle. This won't be a worry on your CFA exam.
Keys are harder to punch; this is a bad feature for professionals. But it is not that bad as long as you can hear the "click", which is not that hard, the number will be there. People with less strength on their finger will complain too.
Easier to change the battery, though you might worry it is too easy. Don't open the cap too often will help. The good news is you no longer need to carry around a skrew driver on you exam day, only the battery.
Customer Review: Sleek Financial Calculator Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for the FM/2 actuarial exam, so this review is primarily for those in the same boat.
This pro model is apparently a more powerful version of the original, but the extra features aren't necessary for the exam. I just liked the sleek look and feel of it better. Whether that justifies the extra $15 or so is obviously a personal decision. Better prices can be had elsewhere, especially for used ones, but the price here is decent enough. As for usability/functionality, it takes some time to get used to, but it's great once you do. (By the way, I'm using the ASM study guide which provides excellent tutorials on BA II's essential functions for solving problems.)
Overall, I highly recommend this calculator. And for those taking the FM exam, study hard and good luck!
