Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TI-30XS Multiview CalculatorCustomer Review: Excellent Scientific Calculator Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this calculator for a friend who is going back to college. This is a great calculator for anyone who cannot afford a graphing calculator, but still wants a pretty robust calculator that can handle just about anything they will encounter.
Anyone who is familiar with how to operate a graphing calculator such as the TI-83/84 will have no problem figuring out how to use this calculator. For those who aren't familiar with calculators or have only used basic calculators, then this calculator will have a bit of a learning curve.
To me, the single best feature of this calculator is that it has multi-line display. This is very handy because this calculator saves the history of the problems entered into the calculator, and with the arrow keys one can scroll through the history of what was entered into the calculator, exactly the way graphing calculators do. This is a really great feature for those who do a lot of calculations and need to look back through their calculations.
In some ways, this calculator is actually better than a TI-83/84 graphing calculator. That is a bold statement for a calculator that costs less than $15. But the reason I say this is because this calculator can do some things that the TI-83/84 cannot, such as the scroll feature I mentioned. Also, this calculator is capable of giving exact root values. For example, if you were to take the square root of 12 with this calculator, it can display the exact value or it can approximate it as a decimal. The TI-83/84 can only approximate it as a decimal. Another thing, this calculator has the capability of displaying fractions in the exact same way one would write them on paper, which is nice to make sure the problems are entered correctly.
I have noticed some people criticizing this calculator because Casio makes a similar calculator that is capable of doing more, such as derivatives and integrals, among other features. While this is true, the reason I picked this calculator is because Texas Instruments is the most popular brand of calculator used in schools and colleges. I felt this was important for my friend. This way if she ever needed help using this calculator, most students and teachers are going to be more familiar with Texas Instrument's products than they would be with Casio.
One other thought I have is that I actually LIKE that this calculator cannot do every single thing! Modern calculators are capable of performing so much now, that students have become too dependent on them. I've tutored so many math students who can only seem to solve a problem that can be put into their calculator. But the moment they run into a problem that cannot be entered into a calculator, though it is fundamentally the same problem, they suddenly cannot do the problem. The reason is because they don't really know how to do the problem.
This calculator is more than powerful enough for the average student to get through all of their math and sciences courses. And like I said earlier, in some ways, it is better than some graphing calculators.
But, the real bottom line is this: for someone who truly understands their course material, this calculator is more than sufficient. For those students who are only looking for shortcuts and are more concerned with knowing how to get their calculator to give them the answer rather than actually learning how to do the problem, this calculator is going to be severely under powered.
