This is an excellent unit, but it shouldn't be sold as a "TV commercial killer" box, but as a "makes movies enjoyable again" box.
I can't stand how new movies have very quiet dialogue, but the special effects (music, car crashes etc) blow you out of your chair.
You get the volume just right to hear people talking then KABAM! it's WAY too loud and wakes the kids up. Oh No! where's the clicker? hurry before you wake up...WAHHHH Wahhhh! the baby...
Not a problem anymore. The VR-1 quiets the loud parts before they go to your amplifier. It also raises the volume on very quiet parts, dialogue is intelligible again! (Huh? what did he say? rewind it...)
The dynamic range can be restored by bypassing the unit with the front mounted switch. (The green pilot light stays on however)
This thing works very well. I can watch whole movies/TV shows and not touch the volume once! what an idea!
The people who have problems with this unit probably aren't hooking it up right, you need a separate amplifier and speakers for it to work. It *won't* work on the built in speakers in a TV set.
This unit is LINE LEVEL AUDIO only!
I had my TV plugged into my stereo before, so I just put this between them. It even came with 6 foot RCA cables. Night and day difference.
Observations:
It does make some static/white noise, but at any reasonable volume you can't hear it.
I can tell when it "cuts in" and lowers the volume, and there are no adjustments you can make. For 20 bucks it works fine, a real compressor/limiter is much more expensive and harder to use.
It makes a great gift. My Mom loves the one I got her, for the same reasons I do.
If you're tired of riding the volume button, the VR-1 is for you. Five stars for the unit and typical fast service from Amazon.
