Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified High-Definition Antenna for Off-Air HDTV ReceptionCustomer Review: Worked good for me. Summary: 5 Stars
I ditched DishNetwork a few weeks ago after getting tired of turning the TV on late night and getting nothing but one infomercial after another. I got this antenna after reading favorable reviews. Once I figured out I had to scan for new over the air stations on my HDTV setup menu I was good to go. I am in North Vegas 25 miles away from the towers and still got good reception. I am on a hill though so im sure that helps. All the station towers are in the same general direction (south) so I think that helps as well. If you miss some channels, move the antenna around and scan again. I am still missing NBC but I will try again if there is something on there i need to watch, but all the other channels fox, cbs, abc, pbs spanish TV all come in crystal clear. I dont watch that much TV anymore anyway so I am saving $800+/yr. I get news clips on Youtube. Cable TV need to get their act together. They are not the almighty monopoly of yesterday. I need to get a small table for the antenna to sit on behind the TV. It is precariously balanced on the thin edge of the top of LCD TV right now and has tipped over a few times but it looks to be sturdy I aint worried anything will snap off and break. It is a powered unit and the amplifier does help. When I forget to flip on the plug its connected to, some channels dont show. World Cup soccer games will be broadcast on the spanish tv channels which comes in very clear HD. I aint missin ya (cable) since you been gone away, I aint missin you at all ... hahaha (1984 single by john waite) sheesh.. been 26 yrs since i heard that song hahaha.
Customer Review: Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified Antenna Summary: 5 Stars
I live in the Los Angeles Metropolian Area on a hill which over looks the San Gabriel Valley and the San Gabriel Mountains which have all of the television and radio transmitters on the top of Mt. Wilson. You would think that I would get great television reception in digital or analog; I don't. There is only one room in my house which get decent reception and that is the bedroom which faces north towards the mountains. The living room, which faces south and which is blocked by the kitchen and garage from the mountains in the north, gets bad reception. That is why I have cable! But, I also have an analog converter just in case I forget to pay the cable bill. Before digital, I have had analog antennas which didn't pick up analog stations very well. When I got the analog converter box for the digital conversion, I first purchased the Philips MAN T510 amplified antenna. I was not happy with it; I constantly had to manipulate the dipoles and the flat panel in various positions which never picked up all of the channels or stayed locked on the ones it did pick up for very long.
I then purchased the Terk HDTVa amplified indoor high-definition antenna. This thing is great! It locks on like a laser to most of the channels - KCBS, KNBC, KABC, KTLA CW, KTTV Fox, PBS stations, ION, and KDOC - that I watch once it was oriented correctly. There has been no manipulation of the dipoles in weird positions, not that you can move them much. This is a fantastic antenna. I bought a second one for another TV in another difficult room; it also works great.
Customer Review: Great Antenna. Exceeded Expectations. Summary: 5 Stars
I recently cut my cable service as I could not justify the monthly cost when I only watched a handful of channels. The HDTVa received a lot of good reviews so I decided to purchase it.
The antenna is easy to set up out of the box. The antenna isn't huge, but it's large enough that you might have to carefully plan where you want to place it, especially considering that the coaxial cable isn't especially long. In my case it wasn't long enough to reach from the nearest window to the TV, so I temporarily placed it on top of my TV (away from the window).
I live in New Jersey about 11 miles away from the nearest broadcast towers (Philadelphia) and on my first scan, the antenna picked up 23 channels (without using the in-line signal booster or raising the rabbit ears on the antenna).
The HD channels are amazingly crisp and clear, and I'm getting CBS, NBC, Fox, Mind network, Telemundo HD, a local all-traffic network, and a handful of other interesting news/food channels.
There were a couple of stations that had a week signal, but I'm sure once I get a longer cable (and use the signal booster) that I'll be able to put the antenna in an optimal position to pull in even more channels.
Overall the Terk HDTVa exceeded all of my expectations. I don't think I've paid so little for something and got so much in return.
I'm planning on replacing a 10-year-old RCA TV set in my bedroom with a new TV and will definitely be purchasing another HDTVa for that TV as well.
Customer Review: In Chicago burbs, works great. Summary: 5 Stars
After getting my 50" Panasonic plasma in March 2007, I got the Philips High Performance Amplified Indoor Uhf/Vhf/Fm/HDTV Antenna, which is amplified and did a reasonable job. My biggest fault with the Philips is that every channel required an adjustment, and the signal strength would vary up to 40%.
I got the Terk, and WOW. I point it right at the Sears Tower (we are about 25mi away), and I CONSISTENTLY get 80% or greater, Fox comes in at an astounding 97%. I had never seen such a high signal strength since I owned the TV. Second, the signal HELD at these high levels, without the peaks and drops that the Philips had. For me, the vertical orientation worked best to get the best signal. For the lower channels, I extended the two small antennas in the base at uneven lengths. One is about 3 feet, the other about 15 inches. Could NOT be better.
The only thing to keep in mind is that this is a directional antenna, meaning you need to point it at the signal source. Luckily for us near Chicago, nearly all of the stations broadcast from the Loop, from one of three buildings. If your stations have different broadcast points, your success may be impacted.
This antenna has solidified my choice to ditch cable and rely of the true, uncompressed HDTV that one gets over-the-air. Compressed cable and satellite HD does not look as good as 1080i from an antenna, especially one that provides such a strong signal as the Terk HDTVa.
Customer Review: Awesome Antenna for the price and reception but feet is unstable Summary: 5 Stars
Having a need a replace my old Philips fishbone antenna to get a better reception for my HDTV, I purchase this antenna based on the high number of positive reviews. I was really skeptical initially after reading the negative reviews.
Things that I observed with is antenna:
1) Setup: You want to make sure you are setup it correctly with the top label of the fishbone part sticker up before plugging in the socket at the end. If you didn't put it in the right way, reception would be almost null for you.
2) Amplifier part of the control: Make sure you turn on the switch on the amplifier box and plug it into power. It surely made a super difference between on and off for me. I had no over modulation or distortion having it on. I was also able to get more channels with this Antenna than my old Philips fishbone antenna.
3) Orientation of Antenna: This part is tricky, there isn't 1 solution that fits all but I found 1 direction gets the best quality reception for most channels.
4) Observation: Overall, very satisfied but I hope the instructions on setup were better. I had to spend about 30mins to learn to use it correctly for the best reception. Also, the base of the Antenna kept making the unix fall off my platform. The base unit of the Antenna and coaxial cable part kept pushing the unit to one side. Maybe I shall use some Velco take to force it to stick on it.
I recommend this antenna and it surely worked as advertised. Thanks Amazon.
