Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Targus XL Rolling Case Designed for 17 Inch Notebooks TXL717 (Black)

Customer Review: Fantastic roll bag for 17" laptop
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the second one of these that I've bought. I looked at about a dozen other types, but keep coming back to this one. It's functional without being overburdened with features.

Customer Review: Excellent Item!
Summary: 5 Stars

I got it for my sister-in-law and she was very happy with it. I will recommed it to anyone who is in need of one. Thank You!

Customer Review: Revised - big bag, good warranty
Summary: 4 Stars

Good warranty/RMA. Large. New version more stable. Large.

NOTE: This is a replacement review for my previous one after having service performed.

Overview
From a features standpoint, this bag is top notch. Telescoping handle, wheels, rip-stop nylon, 2 large pockets, one with segments, one with padding. I have a 17" Fujitsu Lifebook (lifeboat?) (16x12x2) that fits with room in this. The new revision seems substantially lighter than the older, almost identical version.

Wheels
The wheels are not on the far corners, so it's only slightly more stable than smaller bags. It will still twist and fall if you take a curb at an angle.

It's 18.5 inches wide, so it doesn't generally roll down the aisle in an airplane. You'll pull your second bag off the top and carry them, walking sideways.

The wheels are hard rubber, so it's noisy going over tile. You REALY want soft rubber wheels so it doesn't make alot of noise, or catch on a pebble and pull out of your hand.

Size
It's about 8.5" stuffed, so most of the time it'll fit under the chair in front of you, namely aisle seats on an MD80. Window Seats on a 757 have the sloped wall, and you have to run it sideways. Goodbye legroom. On some planes, you'll find it SEEMS to fit just fine, but you have to force it, or stow it above, since it will scrape under-seat power boxes.

The bag is 42.5 dimensional inches, so it counts as your carry-on (up to 45 dim. inches), not your personal item (up to 36 dim. inches).

It would really be nice to find one that's 13.5" to 16" wide so you can get it in tight places, and 18-22" tall with top-loading so you don't have to lay it flat to get your system out.

The McKlein R-Series detachable looks pretty good, but this Targus bag has the handle built in. It provides structural support, and gives room for things like power adapters and small notepads in the back pocket.

Pockets
The bag is really big and has quite a few interior pockets in the accessory pouch on front and the segmented pouch in the back. The padded area is smooth and will protect your laptop until it falls out from under when you're trying to load your machine into the bag. It comes with some velcro inserts and nylon/mesh bags for accessries.

Warranty and Service
I was originally very displeased because the bag fell over ALL the time.

I contacted targus via web and email. Response time was quick. They replaced the bag quickly. They kept me informed.

The replacement is SLIGHTLY redesigned. Various pockets are easier to use. The feet are a little longer. The bottom plate is more solid.

The bag won't stand up if you strap another on top of it, but by itself, even heavily loaded, handle up or down, the new version of this bag will stay upright, even if you tip the handle by about 25 degrees.

It's definitely more likely to fall forward when loaded (laptop pouch is to the front) and backwards when empty (hard to make this happen).

I was truly impressed with how good the warranty service was by Targus.

Summary
It's hard to find a bag for the 17" widescreen laptops out there, and this one, is pretty good.

It's a little tippy, but the new design is much better.

It's a little wide, but that's sort of a market condition, I think.

It's lighter than it used to be.

Overall, this is a pretty decent bag, and Targus' warranty and support were surprisingly good.

NOTE: eBags has really good photos of all of the cases, inside and out.

Customer Review: Suitable for 18.4 inch screen and as daily briefcase
Summary: 4 Stars

TARGUS TXL717 17 XL Rolling Notebook Case: Recently got a notebook with 18.4 inch screen to replace one with a 17 inch screen. Case I already owned (a Targus) not quite wide enough to fit the new PC.
Originally ordered the rolling case (Targus made) my PC maker offered at discount if purchased with PC, no inside pics available on their site nor any product details. It wasn't a bad case, depending on what one needed it to be, but it was structured as a notebook case/overnight luggage, not a notebook case/briefcase. I NEEDED an everyday briefcase that could also hold the 18.4 PC when/if it was going too. Rolling feature was not a necessity for me, but I liked having the option. My old case doesn't, but the 17 inch used to get heavy with files in tow, and the new PC is a bit heavier than the old one. I shipped the 1st new case back, but needed something workable immediately. If you've looked for cases big enough for an 18.4 inch screen, you know the selection is very limited.
I was leery that this case is advertised for up to 17 inch (not 18.4) screens, but I read through the Amazon reviews and saw several from people with 18.4 screens saying it worked, so I ordered it.
Its only drawback if you're toting an 18.4 screen in this case is that, ideally, it should be a scrinch wider to offer more padding on the sides of the machine. I ALSO PURCHASED THE SONY VAIO NEOPRENE zipper case for added protection (even though I don't have a VAIO) which I would highly recommend if you're using this case for a screen wider than 17 inches. My notebook does fit in this case, if a bit more snugly than I'd like. The case is well made, and well designed. Definitely a briefcase with easy to access areas for files, CDs, peripherals, cables, writing implements, etc. All three ways of toting appear to be made sturdily (double ergonomically shaped handles to carry heavy load in hand, shoulder strap and locking telescoping handle with wheels).

Customer Review: More than adequate for the money
Summary: 4 Stars

This ROLLERBAG is not and can never be a backpack as was mentioned in another review. It easily accommodates my 17" HP laptop of 7.7 lbs along with its aftermarket neoprene jacket padding, also a power brick and a host of travel mice, 4 port hubs, CD/DVD ROM cases, USB cables, screen cleaning kits and laptop cool pad.

Construction seems more than adequate - with the sturdy nylon fabric stiffened and braced in strategic places, velcro tie-down straps, telescoping handle and free spinning wheels. Self repairing zippers close compartments easily.

My last laptop was a 15.4 inch - and I purchased a "Swiss Army" roller bag not made for larger 17' laptops. This roller bag is a standard the 17" Targus fails to meet.

The Targus 17" could use one more section for a printer or even a second laptop - more netted compartments to held small items in place and a more comfortable set of carry handles. The Swiss Army bag also has a top surface pouch that made access for car keys, change and other small items both secure and easy to reach.

The Targus 17" handle mechanism is adequate to handle the weight, torque and bulk of the roller bag - but when stowed often fails to line up with its zippered opening - causing one to resch inside the zippered compartment and hunt to pull out the handle through its proper opening.

A very correctable design fault is the uncomfortable hard plastic carry handles - which dig welts into you palms or fingers. Too wide to roll down many airplane aisles - carrying the bag by these handles any great time or length is actually PAIN INDUCING. There is no easy way to carry this bag using these HARD plastic handles.

These minor design issues are more easily forgotten by a great price point from Amazon. Better bags out there??? Yes - of course. Better roller bag for the money for a 17" laptop? I'm still looking...
