I love this bag. It is filled with all sorts of handy pockets and compartments that can be used for a verity of things. It is not overly designed or too specific, just a verity of pockets at a verity of sizes. I do not not know what the mesh pocket behind the front flap was designed for, but it is perfect for holding large rolled drawings sets or my tripod.
This bag holds a tremendous amount. I have routinely loaded it to over 50 pounds when I was carrying books and computer to school. It has held up really well. I have owned it for over 3 years and it has traveled around the world with me. The only wear is cosmetic. I have yet to have a functional failure anywhere on the bag.
It is really really large, which is why I love it, but it is really really large. I am now looking into purchasing a smaller backpack for times when I do not need as much space, though small backpacks that can handle a 17" mobile workstation are hard to come by. The only real caveat I have is that the bag is so large that it may not be suitable for smaller framed females.

I originally purchased this product back in 2006 because I had just purchased a laptop with a 17" screen and couldn't find and single back pack that would fit it. I eventually stumbled across this one on Amazon and brought it home.
The construction of the backpack is very secure and very tough because it has held up for me during college for over 4 years. It has more than enough room for every book that I carry as well as bringing my laptop on campus. The back padding is thick and is not too uncomfortable even with the laptop inside. I actually felt very secure carrying my laptop across campus with it in my bag, even during a rain - because of how well the product was made.
All in all I am very pleased with the bag and I absolutely recommend it to any college student who is looking for a backpack to carry with them to campus.
The only downside - which you can not get past with a 17" laptop - is the sheer size of the bag. Compared to all of my friend's backpacks it is huge, but that is a necessity with a huge laptop as well as wanting to carry books around with you.

It is holding my 17 inch HP Pavilion desktop replacement with no problem. PLENTY of room for the textbooks, notebooks, and binders that are to come in the fall. I should have gotten this backpack in high school. It is extremely durable and made of great materials. There is padding all throughout the bag protecting your electronics while at the same time making it very comfortable to wear. I will be living in the city, so I was concerned about it getting stolen or me getting mugged. To my delight, you cannot tell that there is a computer in the bag, and it doesnt make me look like a geeky engineering major. In response to what the other reviewers said about the pockets, I appreciate how many there are. In fact, I wish it had 1 or 2 more for a digital camera and a mouse (You can still fit both of those in the bag, but it would be nicer if they had dedicated pockets for them). I have been shopping for a while for a laptop backpack that would suit all my needs for the 5 year undergraduate program I am about to begin. Just received the backpack and transferred everything from two backpacks into it with room to spare. My main concern was that it would hold my ASUS G73J which is 16.5 inches wide and 12.5 inches deep - fits with room to spare. You could probably get an 18.4 laptop into it.
I am in the solar business and it has absorbed my computer gear, most of my site survey gear and my cables and test equipment for setting up solar monitoring. Plenty of pockets means most of the gear I carry isn't just jumbled up at the bottom of a compartment.
The construction quality looks good for now...not up to the North Face I used for my old, smaller laptop but this cost half as much and is a lot larger and more spacious.
One note is that the photos show a cell phone holder on the shoulder strap which did not come with it. Not an issue for me since I wouldn't carry my phone that way anyway but a student might find that frustrating. There are pockets on the side and inside the front compartment that would serve for cell phones, though.

I've had this backpack for almost a year now and if I would have reviewed it when I first received it I probably wouldn't have given it as good of a rating. Mostly because it is a lot bigger than I thought it would be. I'm a normal 5'10" 200 lbs guy but when I'm wearing this backpack I feel like an elementary school kid with an oversized backpack on.
However, over time I have grown to love this thing. I often go over to my friends' houses to game and this bag fits my 17" laptop and Xbox 360 with room to spare. I have also used this bag on trips and can fit my laptop and change of clothes easily.
Overall, this is a great bag with lots of room and lots of extra pockets to put stuff in. The laptop pocket is padded and holds my computer snuggly. I'm happy with my decision to buy this bag, and if I would have known then what I know now, I defiantly would have still purchased this bag- even though it is a little big. One final thing, this backpack wears well; it is very comfortable even with a full and heavy load.
