Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Targus XL Backpack Designed for 17 Inch Notebooks TXL617 (Black with Blue Accents)Customer Review: Perfect backpack for my Sager and Notepal Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted the largest backpack I could find for my laptop and its accessories, and this is what I came across. This thing is a monster; I was surprised by what I could fit into it, because I thought for sure the 17-inch laptop was going to be a snug fit on its own. I also regularly carry these things -
Notepal cooling pad (it takes up more room than the laptop)
6x8 Wacom tablet (total dimensions 13.6" x 10.3" x .5")
Razer eXactMat
- with plenty of room to spare for mouse, external hard drive, games/controllers, mp3 player, camera, cellphone, wallet, keys, etc. The drink holder is also quite convenient as you don't have to carry your beverage, and you also don't have to worry about possible leakage inside the backpack. If you're a woman like me, you can even fit a modest-sized purse in one of the front compartments without having to worry about carrying that as well. The backpack can get pretty heavy, yes, but seeing as I'm 5'2" and weigh 96 pounds, I think you can handle it perfectly fine if I can. You definitely wouldn't want to hike up a mountain with this thing on your back...
I would have to agree with another reviewer, however; it seems like there should be more padding on the bottom of the laptop compartment. Nevertheless I have not had any issues with this backpack in the 6+ months I've been using it.
Customer Review: HUGE but GOOD Summary: 5 Stars
It appears that there isn't much choice in super-huge laptop bags at a decent price. The TXL617 was the best deal that I found which matched my needs.
For me, a laptop backpack needs both shoulder straps and a waist strap. The utility of the waist strap adds a lot to the package, useful for strapping it onto the back of my motorcycle, or securing the backpack while climbing a ladder in an industrial setting.
The other thing that I need it storage. Being a uber-gEEk, I carry all kinds of cables, adapters, connectors, tools, etc. Plus I need to have a compartment for documentation. This backpack has it all. Is it light and dainty to carry? Hardly, but when I bought a super-huge laptop (HP G71-340US) I knew what I was getting into. :)
Anyways, this thing is well constructed, has plenty of storage, was a decent value and was exactly what I was looking for. My previous targus bag for a smaller laptop had a nice rainfly that stuffed in a hidden zippered pouch underneath, but I'd trade that for the extra internal compartment that this backpack has.
My one complaint is that the picture shows the standard targus detachable phone holder (like my other laptop had) but one was not included. Hey Targus, where's my detachable phone holder? (I liked to use my other one for my bluetooth headset.)
Customer Review: Big Bag Summary: 5 Stars
I am planning to go to Iraq for a year. I've been told to load up on the electronics, but beware the sand which is as fine as baby powder. I also have concerns about impact protection. The product descriptions supplied by previous customers were accurate. This is a big bag with plenty of room for my 15.4" Lenovo wrapped in a sleeve, my 500 GB hard drive, webcam, ipod, camcorder, paperwork, wires and some toiletries and some clothes if I push it. It is true that the older version has an elastic draw string in addition to the clips to keep the front flap snug to the bag and this one does not, a minor nuisance/inconvenience (The front flap contains smaller zipped compartments). My roomate has the older version in the smaller size, and the bag is better with the drawstring, but there are other minor changes that are improvements.

This bag can take a licking and keep on ticking in addition to protecting it's contents. Did 5 months out of state travel and then 1 year in Iraq and the bag and it's contents were undamaged. I've had my laptop, inside an additional neoprene sleeve, inside the bag during movement and mobilization with no problems. The bag was even tossed off a few Black Hawk helicopters with no problems. Great product, still using it. Will take it back to Iraq or Afghanistan soon.
Customer Review: Targus XL Backpack Summary: 5 Stars
Having just purchased a laptop with a 17 inch screen, I was in need of a new means of lugging it while travelling. I prefer larger screened laptops so a smaller, more portable, laptop was not an option for me. I previously carried a 16 inch screen laptop in a briefcase style laptop bag which served its purpose BUT would not hold anything extra. The Targus bag was big enough to carry my 17 inch laptop plus a couple of pairs of pants and shirts, an SLR camera, several books, and other travel necessities during my latest trip. It has a convenient pocket for a cell phone and I carried my light coat easily between the bag and the outer flap which has adjustable snap closures. I used it as my carry on bag and will continue to do so. The laptop compartment is easy access in order to open and slide out the laptop for inspection at airports and the backpack and carrying handle feel very sturdy. It is also amply enough padded to help protect the laptop from damage as long as I do my part (I always put it under the seat and never in the overhead compartment where someone else can destroy it). Although my briefcase style bag is perhaps more elegant, this bag is much more practical. A person who doesn't like this bag would be very hard to please.
Customer Review: Fits my 17.3 latop perfectly and love the extra room and airport friendly! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought and took back at least 4 bags before finaly finding this one that works with my Dell 17.3 laptop and has extra space since I don't like to carry a purse when I fly. Granted don't stuff it chock full or it won't fit under the seat, but I carry my cell, a book, my laptop, wallet, passport, power supply, meds, make-up and a small writing tablet and pen and my iPod
It is big, but I have never had a problem with any airline not allowing me to use it as my "personal item" as I use a rolling camera bag as my carry on piece.
I would highly recommend this bag to anyone with a larger laptop, it has served me well and I just ordered a second one. It is very durable and has worn well, I ordered the second because the hunt for this one was long and hard and I wanted to have one on hand in case!
I especially love the fact that even as big as my laptop is it fits down in the bag and does not rub at all, many I looked at the laptop fit but it was to snug..
It may not work for a smaller person, I am 5'8 about 135 and it does fine on me, a shorter (5'3) friend tried it on and it was a bit large on her, but not horrid..
Kudos to Targus on this one...well done!
