Customer Review: Powerbook went from no signal to excellent

I was originally going to purchase a GSKY 500mW flat-antenna WiFi adapter, which I'd purchased earlier as a gift for someone else who was having connectivity problems and which worked great. Then I saw this one for just under twelve dollars and decided to give it a try on our old Mac Titanium Powerbook G4, which was equipped with an original Airport card that seemed to be failing. Even when it was close to the router, it didn't work consistently, and in the bedroom -- separated from the router by several concrete walls -- it didn't work at all.
Once we installed this adapter, we get full connectivity and speed! It also allows us to use WPA2 security on the router (the Powerbook G4 wasn't equipped to handle that before). There are some quirks, though...
Finding the right driver for this adapter for the Mac wasn't difficult -- just had to search for "RT2571 driver". I installed the driver, and one surprising thing was that it doesn't work with the Airport icon. Instead, when you plug the adapter in, a proprietary menu comes up showing all the available networks. The first time you use it, you need to go to the Profiles tab, set up a new profile called Home (or whatever) and select your preferred WiFi network SSID (WiFi network name) and password. From then onward, the adapter should always look for that network and connect automatically as soon as it's plugged in.
One quirk that we found is that if you allow the Powerbook to sleep with this thing plugged in, it sometimes crashes. So you need to unplug it before putting the Powerbook to sleep, and set the Energy Saver control panel to not allow sleep after X minutes. A minor inconvenience.
I also tested it briefly on our MacBook Pro (late 2010) and it worked fine. Didn't test to see whether it had the same sleep problem.
The build is pretty flimsy. I bought the 3-foot (1m) AmazonBasics USB 2.0 A-Male to A-Female Extension Cable to go with it, to ensure that we're handling the actual adapter less and can position it where we want it (usually hung on the wall).
