I've had TV Ears for three years now and am about to order second set. I'm a little surprised at a lot of the negative reviews - just hasn't been my experience.
My wife bought me these for Christmas of 06 so she could get some sleep and watch TV without getting blasted out of the room. I routinely transfer them between the bedroom and living room (and even take them on vacation). Tired of moving wires around so I'm getting another set so I can leave them in place in each room. Yes, the tips wear out/fall apart about every six months (for me at least). The sound is very good but not upscale headphone-quality -- there is WAY enough volume! Have used up to four hours at a time and never wore the batt down on the headset. If I leave them on all night they understandably are dead the next day.
Headset is comfortable for me; much more so than conventional headphones. They are very, very light and, as I say, comfortable for the head I'm blessed with. I've had wireless Sonnheiser headphones before and the bulk is not a good trade-off for the increased audio quality. The biggest problem has always been falling asleep and leaving the headphones on, which kills the batts. Rechargeable AAA/AA batts don't seem to have much in the way of long-lasting juice for conventionally-sized headphones. I used to keep a pack of several dozen batts beside my bed! No more with TV Ears set. No more batts have easily paid for the unit.
The sound production is analog, not digital. You cannot use the SPDIF (also known as TOSLink) or any other optical or otherwise digital output from yr sound source and expect anything. Several vendors, including TV ears, sell a DAC (digial audio converter) for this purpose but they are a bit pricey. And you end up getting analog audio at the end of it all anyway.
Consider buying some extra cables and getting an audio switching unit for $8-$10 that will allow you to hook up different audio sources, e.g. DVD, Cable/Sat, Wii and just set the switch to your audio source. Beats the heack out of moving cables around when you want to watch a DVD and your headset is hooked up to satellite outputs.
The reception is line-of-sight, period. Will go thru transparent windows but not walls/doors.
Bottom-line, TV Ears is not a perfect product but it is a very good one. Cost and quality combo makes it a good value.
