Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of TV Ears 10041 Original System (Black)Customer Review: Best thing since closed captioning. Summary: 5 Stars
Television shows (especially older ones), too often aren't captioned. This is also true with current DVD releases, even from the big studios: no captions or subtitles. There's a law that requires closed captioning on newly released media, but studios sometimes ignore it. As I'm hearing impaired and rely heavily on closed captioning, this is particularly frustrating.
I have tried several headsets over the years with varying degrees of success. What's unfortunate is that most headsets aren't designed for the hearing impaired. They're designed for people who want to listen to music as they roam around the house. This means that the headsets aren't optimized for voice enhancement, and instead deliver quite a bit of bass. Bass tones don't improve speech comprehension, they lessen it.
That's where TV Ears comes in. Yes, the name is a bit silly, but this headset really works. The first time I used them I had the silliest smile on my face, because for the very first time I understood what was being said *perfectly*. English accents - long a bane of my TV experience, especially as I love British humor - were no longer a problem. The sound quality is magnificent, and the speech enhancement that the product brags about is spot-on. You can adjust the tone of the sound being delivered to your ears, so you can get just the right amount of bass/treble to give you, essentially, a custom-fit headset.
There's an added bonus.
TV Ears says that most theaters use the same technology that they do. I wasn't sure I believed that, so continued to use the (most often) old and sometimes dysfunctional headsets that theaters provide that don't allow for adjusting the tone to improve speech comprehension. Fed up with watching theater employees throw headsets into bins, and at least a 50/50 shot that when the movie started I was going to have to go back and exchange the headset, I tried my TV Ears in the theater. They worked. Instead of simply "booming" the sound, it was just like at home: The headsets enhanced what was being said. Whenever I go to the movies, I "never leave home without" them. They're more reliable than American Express. <wink>
Customer Review: Perfect gift for mom Summary: 5 Stars
My mom has been having increasing trouble hearing the tv, to the point where she leaves the subtitles on to keep up. I read all the reviews on these and other wireless headsets and decided this would be the best solution.
The hookup was easy, and having the option of connecting it directly to the tv with the included audio plugs, or putting the included microphone in front of the speaker gives alot of flexibility.
We moved the base around until we found a place where she has reception throughout the living and dining rooms.
Other people can watch/listen to tv at their volume, and she can adjust the volume and balance for her headset.
The only thing that would be nice, but probably isn't possible is to mute the tv, but be able to hear through the headset. If you turn the volume all the way down on the tv, you can't hear it through the headset either.
Her tv has the audio jacks in the back, so I had to be the one to pull the tv away from the wall to set it up. Not a problem, but it reduces the potential portability of the unit when visiting my brother. She's not going to be moving the tv around to be getting to the plugs. For travel, she's taking the microphone with her and setting it up that way - not as good a solution, but it works short term.
I'm going to encourage my brother to purchase one of these to keep at his house so she doesn't need to transport the one I got for her.
Customer Review: A nice unit for amplifying sound Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my elderly father, who is very hard of hearing and uses a hearing aid. The problem was that even with the hearing aid, he still had trouble hearing some TV shows.
This unit comes with a microphone that I attached to the speaker on the TV, and a set of wireless headphones with their own volume control that are charged in a stand that sits next to the TV.
The unit works like a charm for my father. He takes out his hearing aid, and uses the unit to watch old movies that don't have the same volume level as other TV broadcasts.
In the beginning he did not position the headphones exactly right in the charging stand. It is not hard to do so, and when I pointed out that a green light will come on when the headphones are positioned properly, he got the hang of it.
For anyone who has difficulty hearing, even if they use a hearing aid, this unit will make it very easy and enjoyable for them to watch TV without missing a word.
Customer Review: 2-years satisfied customer - And upgraded, too Summary: 5 Stars
I bought TV Ears original in January, 2006. I have used them daily for 2 years and they have performed well during the entire period. They have been sturdy, the battery has powered them for even very long periods of watching, and the sound has been great.
I don't understand those who claim this is a poorly-made device. I think it's great.
Updated July, 2008: I just bought a new HD LCD TV which, with compact fluorescent lights in the room, caused some interference with my original TV Ears.
I moved them to another room with a new HD LCD and NO CFLs and it works just fine for my aged father.
Then I bought TWO of the new model which works with HD LCDs. These are in the living room with the TIVO, and my Dad is able to join me when he's interested. Once again, these new TV ears meet my needs wonderfully. My wife considers these to be among the best investments of our marriage.
Thanks, TV Ears
Customer Review: TV Ears Summary: 5 Stars
I want to thank you for your prompt delivery of the TV Ears Original. They have worked fine for my husband who is quite deaf and chairbound. The TV loudness is the worst, but now he can listen to whatever and not have me turning it down so often. The problem with the ear pieces are that even though covered with a soft material, they make his ears sore and he can't use them as often as he'd like. I'd prefer for him a style with a large enough soft piece that would cover the ear rather than inserted in the ear. Kind of like headphones that fit over the ears. However, I'm not sure if this style would let him hear as well so we'll be happy with these and just use them for special programs that include a lot of music. Thank you.
