I can only comment on the thru performance. Can't comment on the surge protection part and hope to never have to. I installed this device outside where my house receives the signal. It is located in a weather resistant box. My grounding rod is about 2 feet away from the cable box itself. Grounding this using was so easy, instructions don't even need to be given. My home has a Cable network and we have notice NO change in internet speed and the cable boxes are still able to receive updates without hesitation from our service provider. It is almost as if the device isn't there, but I know it is. This is my first line of defense with the cable. I still have my modem and tv's going into a secondary surge protector with Cable protection also. I live in Central Fl and with the lighting strikes during the rainy season so common, I feel I can rest a little easier with the cable line, however No direct lighting strike is going to be stopped by this or any unit. For normal surge protection, I believe this is a very good unit and has gotten very good reviews elsewhere on the internet.
