Cable is nice and thick (better than my HDMI cable.) Works great. No problems with hot swapping and ATI Catalyst detects it as DVI but allows me to disable it as HDMI.
To do this see "Alternate DVI operational mode" under a secret configuration window for Digital/HDTV video -- I just discovered this after 3 years. Desktops & Displays>>(right click small TV icon)>>Configure>>Attributes tab. The only help with these settings is found in various community forums, so you can search for the quoted phrase above for info. I don't see any difference in the quality of my picture from HDMI, but I am using a 32inch screen, so you folks with larger displays will have to be the judge.
Viewing mulitple monitors seems fine, although I didn't test it in detail. Sometimes the other monitor was senced after hot plugging and sometimes I had to restart to pick it up. Updating to the latest video drivers seemed to help.
Windows still insists on installing the annoying ATI HDMI audio driver (Realtek chipset) even though the DVI port does not carry sound. This occasionally conflicts with my other devices containing Realtek chipsets -- everything from network adapters to RAM modules to sound cards. I guess the ATI card doesn't care whether the HDMI speakers are available. It installs the driver anyway. :-( FYI: Updating my motherboard's chipset drivers and inf files helped with these driver conflicts.
Lastly, I found I prefer the DVI cable over the HDMI because reading text across the room is easier on the PC. My Toshiba flat screen scales the aspect ratio differently and allows me to use 1360x765 instead of 768. Not only is my text larger due to the lower resolution, but my applications are happier and my video is better. This is due to the resolution being true 16:9 so my TV displays in 1080p instead of 768p.
One annoying glitch I haven't figured out yet. ATI Catalyst doesn't seem to want to allow Video Overlay to kick in anymore, even if I switch back to the HDMI cable. So the ATI Video settings have no affect on movies All of the dark seens are practically black but the light seens are still very bright. This only happened before with Internet video but now it's a problem in all of my video software, regardless of the codecs; regardless of my driver version; regardless of a Windows reinstall. I hope I haven't broken my monitor. I'll report back when I find a fix for this.
