Customer Review: Great hard case, however....

I am a big believer in these types of cases for laptops especially if you use your laptop out of the house. The bottom line is they offer a level of protection that is simply not there if you decide not to use one and lets face it, most people cannot afford to just run out and replace broken Apple Macbook Pro's. Believe it or not but the aluminum Apple uses is actually quite easily scratched and as anyone who has looked in the used market can tell you, the places where you touch the aluminum with your hand or forearm start to dull over time. If you want to keep your aluminum case in pristine condition then these cases are the only way to go and keeping your case in pristine condition will keep the value of your laptop from depreciating due to cosmetic flaws and will make it that much easier to sell.
The only negative to using one of these cases is that it increases the dimensions of your laptop thus making it too big for some of the messenger bags / Backpacks on the market. For example I had my heart set on using the Booq 15" Vyper Exo made especially for the 15.4" Unibody Macbook Pro and I ordered one the day I got my computer. Unfortunately it just didn't fit with the Speck case on. I sent it back and used the eBags measurement tool that allows you to enter in the precise dimensions of your laptop thus telling you what bags your laptop will fit in. Unfortunately I found out a lot of the companies out there do exactly what Booq did with their Vyper Exo and that is make the laptop compartment in their bags nice and snug. That means that adding a half inch to the dimensions of your computer suddenly makes that bag unusable. I have since found a bag that fits however that bag wasnt even in my top 5 choices. Actually it wasnt even a bag that I had looked at previously, I just got so tired of looking that I finally just caved in and bought one that fit.
So if you have your heart set on a particular bag or even if you have a bunch of bags that you would like to use, make sure that they are big enough to use with a Speck case. I was really shocked at just how many bags became unusable by using a Speck and while that is a negative in my book, its not something that I can blame Speck for hence the 5 stars I gave this case. Its the companies making the bags like Booq that seem to have no foresight that some people use these cases and still require a bag with which to travel with. All these companies had to do is increase the width of the laptop compartment by a quarter inch and they would have remained a viable option for people with these speck cases. Unfortunately that just isnt the case so make sure you factor that in when choosing to use one of these cases. IMO, it just isn't worth giving up this level of protection so I chose a different bag instead of choosing to stop using my Speck case. Again something to think about!
Bottom line - Dont listen to the naysayers. As long as you buy the proper speck case then you wont have any of the problems that some people suggest they have. The screen opens up just as much as it ever has and it doesn't overheat. The air slots in the Speck case are perfectly adequate for cooling it down even over long sessions. I have now been using mine for over 7 months and haven't had a single issue and my case still looks as new as the day I got it.
