Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Speck Products Apple iPad ShieldView Anti-Glare Protective Screen Films, 2-Pack, IPAD-SHVW-A025MTCustomer Review: This one REALLY IS anti-glare! Summary: 5 Stars
If you're like me, and have been searching FOR.EV.ER. for a true anti-glare screen protector for your iPad.... don't waste your time with any of the other brands. This is the one you want.
I test the anti-glare-ness of a screen protector by standing under a bright light, holding the device with the product in question applied to it. In recent years I've had an iPod Touch, two iPhones, and now the iPad, so I've done a lot of testing. With most brands of screen protectors, you can clearly see the sharp outline of the light fixture reflected on the screen of the device. Hey, manufacturers: that's not anti-glare!
But with this product, what you see is a warm fuzzy glow. From an angle, you can see what's on the screen without bobbing your head around like a pigeon. The nice matte finish also cuts down on the appearance of fingerprints, though you still have to give it a wipe now and then.
This is really the end of the "review" portion. If you want some tips about how to apply the screen protector, read on:
-----
First, you'll need something to smooth out the film as you apply it. It would be nice if this brand included an "applicator card," like some other brands do, but I'm not taking off any stars for this omission. Go get your debit card or something like it that has a thin, sharp edge.
Next, clean the screen with the included lint-free cloth.
Clean it really well.
Then clean it again.
If you have to go get your debit card at this point, clean the screen again when you come back. You don't want it sitting there collecting dust for any length of time.
The product instructions will tell you to peel off the backing on Side 1. But for heaven's sake, don't peel it all the way off all at once! Just pull it back an inch or two, like a banana. (Be careful not to touch the exposed side of the film. That leaves fingerprints, which can attract dust even in the short time that it takes to do this.)
You'll be starting with the "Home button" end, so it's easy to position the film properly -- just align the cutout circle over the Home button, and make sure the bottom edge of the film is straight on the screen.
Now use your card to smooth out the bubbles as you go. Don't wait and try to do this after the film is all the way on. That would never work. Push the card back and forth across the screen, like an intoxicated snowplow. If you get a bubble, lift up the film a tiny bit -- you can do this easily because you have the "unwrapped" portion still in your hand -- and squeeze out the air with the debit card.
Peel the backing off a little more, and smooth it down with the card. Work carefully and methodically, peeling and smoothing, peeling and smoothing. Before you know it, you'll work your way across to the other side of the screen, bubble-free.
For the final step, carefully peel off the "backing #2," on the front side. Keep the debit card handy for this part -- if you go too fast, the suction will pull up the film that you just applied, and you'll get little bubbles around the edge of the screen or around the Home button. But since they're right at the edge, they're not hard to push out with the card.
There, you're done -- a clean, anti-glare finish on your iPad. Truly a thing of beauty.
