I live in Baltimore, a city known for its large population of mice and rats. To make matters worse, I live on the first floor of an old apartment building, with the dumpster and back ally right next door. We moved in the summer when it wasn't cold enough for the rodents to want to come in yet and bought these pretty much immediately after we moved in and hopefully before rodents would need to come in (winter). The nice thing about these rodent repellers is that it comes with 4 so we have one for about every room except the bathroom.
While practically everyone I know who lives in my building and other buildings in Baltimore has a rodent problem, we have been rodent free for about 6 months. I don't think these are meant to kill or trap them, just deter them from wanting to enter. If they have alternative places to go, they will go there instead of bothering with the noise.
I recommend these especially for apartment living. They are small, discreet, and can be plugged in all around apartment to get full coverage. In order to be effective, they must be plugged in the wall and have clear space around it. The waves will get absorbed in couches and curtains, so try to have them face walls or hard surfaces so they can bounce and resonate throughout the space. Make sure you have enough outlets that meet this requirement before buying.
