Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sling Media Slingbox SOLO (SB260-100)Customer Review: Sling Box Solo Summary: 5 Stars
The product works great and is easy to install. You need at least 250 upload on your connection. If you have crappy DSL 768 you have to make sure it has 384 upload. I switched from DSL to Comcast and on Comcast it works better. You should make sure you understand it though because after the first year if there is a connection problem and you call support, they will wack you $30 or so for help. If there is a problem it's either resetting the modem, the unit itself or logging in to the unit itself. If you have issues with it it's never the device itself. The video is compressed so it's not as good as what you see at home but it's good enough to see a golf ball fly and a hundred mile an hour pitch. I'm totally pleased. I had it working with Comcast Cable and presently with Directv. If you have an analog input you need to change it to a digital output. You don't need an extra box though. All you have to do is put the cable to a VCR and have the RCA VCR OUT go to the unit. You can also record that way and replay it back. Pretty cool. I would go the beach in the day, tape a golf tournament and watch it at night 90 miles from my house.
Customer Review: Premium TV all over the house and on the road Summary: 5 Stars
I pay a lot for my TV services and wanted to maximize where I can view them. With Slingbox and fast wireless internet, I can watch everywhere. Some things to note: the Slingbox itself must be connected to your network via ethernet OR you have to purchase a "SlingLink" box to extend your home wireless network. It does not have built-in wireless capability, so you'll need a long CAT-5 or CAT-6 cable to connect your Slingbox to your network. Then, you need a router that supports port-mapping (allows your network to be configured to allow you to hit the device via the internet). Once you have these essential items, the SlingPlayer application makes the set up easy. Even if you have to do a manual configuration, by going to the SlingBox Setup Assistant and the product support web site, it will walk you through the steps and get you going. This is a really well-thought-out device with some of the best-designed support tools I've seen. I'm really glad I went for it and look forward to testing it on the road!
Customer Review: Great product Summary: 5 Stars
I travel a lot and as hotel TV offerings are very limited, I saw this as a way to keep up on hometown news and watch my favorite shows while away. The setup was pretty easy; I have a DSL modem router and a home wireless router and the wizard set up everything OK (I have a hardwire from the receiver to the slingbox and then to the modem). I found that at my normal workplace, the firewall kept me from connecting, but I'm not supposed to be watching there anyway. At hotels and at airport hotspots it works like a charm. The picture quality is dependent on the bit rate that you can get from the internet connection. At one hotel I was getting 800 kbps and the picture was extremely clear. At another hotel I was only getting 200 kbps (even though they advertised that they had high speed)and the picture would sometimes get kind of blocky, but it was still watchable. At most hotels it is fine. Overall, I'm very happy with this product and would highly recommend it.
Customer Review: Awesome Product... Summary: 5 Stars
This product is awesome. It works extremely well. It allows me to watch my DirecTV DVR located in my bedroom while I am away via the Internet, in my office on my PC, using my laptop over WiFi, and it works well on my iPhone (even over the 3g network). On the iPhone I mostly use it for CNN. (oh my eyes) :) It was easy to setup BUT it does not come with any software. You have to download it from the manufacturer's website. I could see someone with little PC experience or non-technical savvy person having problems setting this up and getting it working. Not because of the product, but because they don't understand how the technology works. Like firewall setup, IP address stuff and so on.
My outbound speed is 2Mb so video and sound are pretty good remotely. My only regret is I wish I found this product a long time ago! :) I love this product and highly recommend it!
Customer Review: Slingbox SOLO, works great and as advertised Summary: 5 Stars
I was rather surprised to see this product in person. It was rather compact a bit larger than a thick paper-back novel. It came in an elegant glossy finished that had the look of quality. I only have this box configured for my local network only so I can't comment on its use from the internet. From my perusing of the manuals, it didn't look all that obvious how one can configure that. To be honest, I did not buy this device for that feature. Besides that, the box worked perfectly over my Airport Extreme N network and my PowerMac G4 MDD and Powerbook G4. The included software was a breeze to install and use. Once set up, one can set up shortcut buttons on the interface without reverting to the virtual remote control. This is a great little product that does what it's supposed to do. Well worth the money. BTW, I don't have any HD components so this model works perfectly for me.
