Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sling Media Slingbox SOLO (SB260-100)Customer Review: Just what I needed... Summary: 5 Stars
I don't have a cable connection in my bedroom, so I wanted the SlingBox to watch television there. It has served the purpose well.
I know it sounds silly, but my biggest question when trying to decide to buy it was if you had to be watching the same thing as where the actual receiver is located. The answer is yes and no. If you have a dual receiver and you are not already using the second output somewhere else in your house, then you can connect the SlingBox to the second output. We use our second output in our son's room, so the SlingBox is connected to the first output. When I change the channel watching on my laptop via the SB, it changes the channel in my den, and vice versa. Which is fine, it still does what I wanted it to do, I just wanted that clarified before I bought it and that was never really spelled out clearly anywhere.
As far as using it, there is a bit of a lag controlling the remote on my laptop when I am using it somewhere else in the house, but I have gotten pretty good at allowing for that. When using it away from the house, the biggest factor is the speed of the Internet connection where I am using it. But, I don't really use it away from the house all that much, so I don't have a lot to say about that.
Overall, this solved my problem of wanting to watch TV (including what I have saved on the DVR) in my room, and I am very pleased with my purchase.
Customer Review: How did I live without it!! Summary: 5 Stars
I've now had my Slingbox Solo for a couple of weeks now and I'm wondering why I didn't buy one of these sooner. The installation was fairly easy. Just hooked it up to my existing Netgear router and went to the internet site provided in the installation instructions. It found the Slingbox on my network in no time, then it did a firmware update asked me what Dish Network DVR I had and then we were good to go. The quality over my existing network was great when I watched from one of my in-house computers. In terms of watching it away from home, well then it depends on what your upload speed is at home. I have DSL service with a 360k upload speed, therefore watching it was similar to Youtube standard quality which is why I didn't bother buying the Slingbox ProHD because it would of been a waste on my DSL connection. I wouldn't go full screen viewing at this size but in terms of watching it on my iPhone at 3G speeds it works great. The iPhone screen size is just right for this quality streaming. My wife is also a little jealous since her Blackberry Curve can't do 3G, only Wifi so she's stuck watching mine. Basically the better your upload speed at home, the more you'll get from your slingbox. I'm just counting the days when FIOS becomes available in my area.
For $150 for the Slingbox plus $30 for the Slingbox iPhone app its the best $ I have spent so far
Customer Review: Innovative product with no monthly fee Summary: 5 Stars
These days I don't expect much to be free. Well finally here is a product that you buy once and you have no recurring fee. This product follows through on all of its promises. You can watch your cable TV anywhere you can get through a firewall on the Internet (which isn't everywhere). The video quality is not HDTV by Slingbox's own admission; nevertheless, it's pretty good quality. The cable and phone companies must hate this product because they don't get to charge twice for the same service - BooHoo!. If you feel bad, you can always send me a check. I despise TIVO and DVRs that want me to pay for the box and then charge a monthly fee forever. I like the Slingbox much better because I can access all of my premium channels and On-Demand for free. I suspect somebody will figure out a way to charge for this device under the guise of copyright infringement or some other digital rights claim. This is a good device for a fair price and has no recurring fee. BTW: I strongly suggest you use a hardwire to connect this to the Internet (or your router). Instead of spending $100 for the Slinglink or something similar, buy a Cat-5 or Cat-6 cable for under $10 and forget the headaches involved with powerline or wireless Internet connections that are hard to setup and are problematic.
Customer Review: Slingbox SOLO Summary: 5 Stars
Easy to install, just plug the component video cables (not included), the Ethernet cable, IR, and the power source; configure through a computer on your network, update the slingbox, it takes about 7-10 minutes to have it all set, and you're ready to watch TV anyplace there is broadband connection.
I have a Motorola DCT 6412 DVR, cable modem with 2Mbps upload speed in my house; and a ADSL modem with 2 Mbps dowload in my office and the video quality is very good.
I would rate the video and audio quality:
On your own network.
Video 9/10
Audio 8.5/10
Through internet, with adecuate speed, the faster, the better.
Video 8/10
Audio 8/10
For those who are interested in using this device in Mexico, if you connect the Slingbox at home, with an upload speed higher than 500 kbps, and travel to Mexico, you'll be able to watch video with good quality, it works with the main internet provider here, Telmex, the download speed here is not fast at all, but still you can get good quality.
But, if you're planning to connect the slingbox to your cable or DVR, located in Mexico, if you use Telmex broadband, you will get very low quality video. The upload speed of Telmex broadband is 100 kbps, just not enough.
Customer Review: Slingbox works like a charm Summary: 5 Stars
My Slingbox works like a charm. My main purpose in acquiring this device was to allow me to view the first two rounds of the major PGA golfing events at my office. But now, not only can I enjoy those events, but I can also remotely record and view shows on my home cable box's DVR. The Slingbox graphic user interface on my remote computer is so easy to use, and the virtual remote control displayed is almost identical to the real McCoy.
I experienced trouble during the initial set up that was quickly and easily resolved. The first was that my NetGear router required me to set up port forwarding. The very nice and capable Slinbox technicians patiently walked me through this process and helped me set this up. The other issue was that my cable company (Time Warner) recently decided to downgrade the upload speeds of all of their customers in my area from over 1Mbps upload speed to less than 400 kbps. This is a tactic TW used so they could charge extra for those who wanted to upgrade to their Turbo speed for an extra $5/month. After the upgrade, the video feed transformed from a poor and choppy viewing experience to one that is now nice and smooth.
