Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sling Media Slingbox PRO (SB200-100)Customer Review: Great Solution to My Dilemma Summary: 5 Stars
I will be attending weekend grad school classes in Chicago this fall and couldn't bear the thought of going full Saturdays without college football (Go Horns!). My girlfriend gave me a Slingbox Pro for my recent birthday and I set it up this past weekend using a Slinglink Turbo powerline ethernet bridge. Thanks to the wi-fi at school, I'll be able to keep tabs on the games throughout the day (and class).
Side note: While I wasn't thrilled to pay another $129 for the Slinglink Turbo, I don't fault Sling for this as some previous commenters have done. I couldn't physically locate the Slingbox near my router and knew I needed some solution (wired or wireless).
Hardware installation was a snap, including the slick IR emitters for remote control of the Slingbox. The software install on a windows laptop was equally easy and I was slinging over the home network in no time and shortly thereafter via the internet.
Video quality is great in a small window on your computer's desktop, and good (but not great) in full screen on my 19" LCD monitor. The commenter who was dissatisfied with the video on his 32" TV or monitor has unrealistic expectations IMHO.
I'm very happy with this product and think it's going to serve my needs well.
Customer Review: Absolutely amazing Summary: 5 Stars
works exactly as advertised. I had my brother set it up in an unused room in my mom's house (across the country). Then I simply downloaded the software and entered the player's ID number. works like a charm.
Two caveats though:
1) wifi: the player does not do wi-fi unless you buy an expensive adapter. wasn't a problem for me, but may be for you. then again, wifi is pretty unreliable and much slower than wired, so I don't think its worth doing anyway
2) restrictions: there are two restrictions that kind of suck. only one person can operate the slingbox at a time. if my buddy turned it on on his end, mine would close. At least it tells me who did it.
Also, if I watch (and I were connected to a cable box that connects to a TV) the cable box would be switching channels as I control it. That means wherever it was set up would be controlled by me. not a huge deal, but a hassle if you set it up at someone else's place like i did.
All in all, its great and now i can watch all the blazer's games without having to buy league pass year after year!!
Customer Review: even better than original Slingbox Summary: 5 Stars
I bought a Slingbox because I live and work in Europe and like to keep up with all sorts of American sports. Last year I installed an original Slingbox at my home in Ann Arbor. It's been great. I have 'Slinged' at my apartment in Budapest and all over the US and Europe using my laptop and wifi connections.
Sling Media does a great job of upgrading/updating its software improving picture resolution. I upgraded to the Slingbox PRO and have seen a significant improvement in the picture quality. I don't know if it's really the 400 times improvement over the original Slingbox that Sling Media claims, but it really gives a much crisper pictures at large viewing sizes. As with the original Slinbox, setup can be a little tricky especially for those with little experience in setting up wireless networks/devices. In my case, I had to play around with some network settings.
If you're deciding between the original Slingbox and the Slingbox PRO, I would make the extra investment in the Slingbox PRO.
Customer Review: Love, Love, Love It!! Summary: 5 Stars
I investigated this product about a year ago when I anticipated traveling and wanted to see my local news and sports. I moved also and found that it would be very expensive to have wiring installed in a rental property in order to have access where I wanted to locate my home office, I checked into Slingbox again. After hearing a presentation by David Pogue, I asked him what he thought of Slingbox. I was concerned about some problems expressed by users with other IR devices interfering with the signal. He said he loved his and if you have a problem just change the phone nearest to the signal to a different megahertz phone. I ordered from Amazon that night and actually received it the next day. Connected, no interference problem, love, love, love it!! Clear instructions, clear packaging, just make sure you really push the IR connection all the way in. It's almost a two step push. I'm watching the local news as I type this. Best thing I've bought for my computer in years.
Customer Review: Slingbox Pro Summary: 5 Stars
Easy to setup, no hassles. When I tried it under a new laptop w/ Mcafee I had to do some tweaking to get it to work, (problem w/ Mcafee not slingplayer. Quality is not stellar when slinging away from home (my connection is tested at 500k upload) but its still very viewable, nothing beats being able to access your dvr'ed shows WHEREVER!! It's actually useful when you forget to program a recording and want to do it remotely. Slinging at home (on your local network) picture quality is very good, similar to a good tv tuner card. Great for someone in the military who wants to watch their local hometown programming and/or is to cheap to pay for cable of their own (My brothers case). Slinging on a pda is actually very viewable, but the 30 bucks EXTRA!?! for the pda software is kind of extreme. (I used the thirty day trial and liked it but couldn't justify $30 more on top of over $200 for the box just to view my own hardware, thats why I returned Sony's attempt at this same thing.)
