Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sling Media Slingbox AV (SB240-100)Customer Review: As Good As It Gets for a Couch Potato Summary: 5 Stars
One of my favorite toys is TiVo. I've had one for 7 years. Now I have 2 Series 3 HD boxes and they're networked together. I have a Slingbox hooked up to the outputs of one of them. So I can now watch anything on either of them on my PC wherever I can connect to the I'net. Way cool!!!
The remote (or picture of the remote) is exactly the same as the actual TiVo remote, so nothing new to lean. Just load it up and I'm watching House or Monk. Or that adult movie I recorded off Showtime. I can even delete old shows on the TiVo just like I was at home sitting right there.
I don't know why I waited so long to get one of these.
I got the AV model for <$100. I could have gone for the more expensive HD model, but I don't really need it. I watch on my laptop, not a 30" monitor.
I was waiting for someone the other day, so I pulled out my laptop, grabbed someone's wireless signal, and in no time, I'm sitting in the pizza parlor watching a recording at home; or live TV.
Setup is a snap. Mac or PC, or both. Noone to pay. No experience necessary (although I manage networks for a living, and equipment doesn't get much easier than this. If you can plug in a cable, you can do this).
10 stars for this television/video masterpiece. Now I just need a button to end the writer's strike.
Customer Review: Easiest set up ever Summary: 5 Stars
First off let me tell you I love this product. It operates just as they advertise. I set it up about a 2 weeks ago, and I have not had any performance issues. My Slingbox is located in the bedroom well away from the office where my DSL and Router are located, so a hard connection (which is required) was a concern. The solution was the Buffalo Wireless G Ethernet converter. Once I configured the Ethernet converter with my Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router (which also was a snap, it practically configured itself, by just following a few simple instructions), I unplugged the Buffalo and moved it to the bedroom, and connected it to the Slingbox. I then installed the Sligbox software on my PC, and before the installation was complete I was already receiving a picture signal. After the final optimization steps, I was watching Direct TV on my PC. I then installed the software to my laptop, and again, it has been working great with no issues. I would recommend this product to anyone. In fact I haven't stopped talking about it yet. BTW -The Buffalo Ethernet converter specifically mentions the Slingbox product by name on the back of the box, which is one of the reasons to try this product. I also have a D-Link gaming bridge on my X-Box 360 which works great for internet gaming, but is not recommended for the slingbox.
Customer Review: Watch TV on the go Summary: 5 Stars
The Slingbox is very easy to setup. Just connect it to your router, your TV set, go through the setup wizard, and then sit back and relax and let it do its thing.
I use it to watch TV when on the computer in another room. I also have a Treo 755 that I use to watch TV when I'm out and about. The downside here is that the software for Slingplayer to use with mobile phones is $30.00. It all evened out for me because I found the Slingbox on sale at Fry's for $80.00.
Only one person can use the Slingbox at a time. There is an administrator password that lets you kick off anyone using it. To make use of the Slingbox, I let my brother use it. I tell him what times he can use it and if I need to use it during those times, I'll just kick him off.
Using the Slingbox controls what is being viewed in person. So there are certain times when the wifey is watching TV that I have to back off and let her control it. No big deal since we have this unit connected to our least used TV that is only used when we go to bed.
I didn't opt for the Solo or Pro because I feel that I just needed something basic to get me watching TV and has decent quality at the same time. If I wanted to watch some in high quality, I'd be in front of my TV.
Customer Review: Love to "sling" my media! Summary: 5 Stars
I decided to get the Slingbox AV as soon as they released Mac OS X support for the player software. It works flawlessly and was totally easy to set up. Within the hour of receiving it, I had it connected to my network, and streaming my Tivo content to my iMac and PowerBook laptop! I have an 802.11g network with WPA encryption. Since I don't have a wired port near my Tivo, I purchased an Airport Express, set it up as a wireless bridge (called WDS) with my Airport Extreme base station, and then connected the Slingbox to its ethernet port. Connected the S-video and audio cables to my Tivo, and lastly, connected the IR remote cable to the Tivo.
Software setup was just as easy, downloaded the latest version on my Mac, copied it to Applications, opened it up. It searches for the slingbox, you set an admin password, and it starts streaming! If you connect it to a Universal Plug N Play router (which the Airports are not), it can even configure the port for you to be able to view your slingbox from the internet remotely. I manually set the port forwarding on my Airport easily.
Wireless streaming looks great on my network. Remote viewing quality depends on your upload speed on your cable or DSL modem, but is quite acceptable looking at ~380 kbps for standard def.
Customer Review: Works well at a great price Summary: 5 Stars
Installation on a normal home network setup is very easy. My setup was a little more complex due to voip router, and 2nd wireless router. Sling has instructions on their web site but I still had to mess around with my settings in order to get it to work. To work on multiple routers you have to do port forwarding on both routers to port 5001. Once I worked this out everything is great.
Video quality is good in the house, haven't tried it from another location. I'm running the Sling AV with Netgear Ethernet power adaptors to my router and then watching TV via wireless to my laptop. Now we can watch TV in any room of the house. My wife loves being able to watch the news in the morning while in the kitchen. She also loves being able to surf while having a show running in a small window on the side.
Control of my Dish DVR is very good. We can manage any feature of our Satelite/DVR box. This will come in handy when we travel as we have our sons Seaseme Street shows on the DVR and now we can take those with us on the road.
Overall, I'm pleased with the Sling AV. It offers good performance at a great price point. Now Sling just needs to get the Mac version out so I can watch TV on my beautiful 15.4 inch Mac Book Pro.
