Customer Review: My Favorite Toy

I'll preface my Stiletto review by giving a mini-review of Sirius itself. A subscriber since the fall of 2006, it quite simply is something I would now find very hard to live without--well worth the $15/month in my opinion. I mainly became a subscriber b/c of Howard Stern and his show has been great since he came to Sirius. As a long time fan, the wonderful thing about Sirius was being able to hear his show ANY time of the day as they rebroadcast it several times. 10 years ago I would never imagine being able to listen to Stern on the commute HOME from work, on a long weekend road trip, at night while jogging, etc. In addition to Stern tho, you have so many music, entertainment, sports, talk options to choose from. I really feel that satellite radio is the best thing out there now for music lovers who want to discover new music. Where else can you discover it nowadays? Sirius displays the songs and the artists you are hearing -- stations like The Spectrum (adult alternative), Coffeehouse (singer/songwriter), 1st Wave (classic alternative) will introduce you to artists/songs you've never heard before and give you the basic information you need to seek them out -- ya' know, kinda how like terrestrial radio USED to be before stations determined that you really just needed to hear the same set of 20 songs played every day. So if you love music and are looking for a way to discover new artists -- there really is no better choice than Sirius.
A lot of reviewers have mentioned that their Stilettos just crapped out all of a sudden. I've owned mine for about 10 months now and have not had that problem. Will I get an error message every now and then that shuts the unit off and reboots it? Yes. But, has it ever totally crapped out where I cannot use it? No. And I use it usually multiple times every single day in the car and at home. Using it in the car, the signal I get is stronger than the one I got using the Sportster. Hear a song on a station that you like? Press a button and you can record it and store it on your unit and it's yours forever (know that you have to have been listening to the song from the beginning to record the entire song). The unit holds 100 hours of storage. Install a micro flash card and you can take your own music library and add it to the Stiletto. Now if you are indoors with a roof over your heard -- you're not really going to get satellite radio reception. However, if you can access wi-fi service, you're all set. If you're outdoors and want to take a walk--to receive satellite service, you would need to use the satellite headphones (a little bulky, but not nearly as bad/uncomfortable) as some reviewers indicate. The absolute biggest perk of the unit in my opinion is the ability to record programming. A typical morning for me is listening to Stern using wi-fi from 6-7 as I get ready for work around the house. Installed in the car, I listen to the show until 8 on my commute from work. If the weather is not too hot, I will hook up the Stiletto to the satellite headphones, place the headphones somewhere in the car near a window to receive a signal, set up the unit to record the rest of the program, and then place the Stiletto under the driver's seat so you're not inviting anyone to break into your car to steal it. Obviously, I'm *still* taking a chance leaving the unit in the car to do this, so depending on where you live/park, you may not want to follow this procedure. Doing this, I always find that I have some Stern to listen to & find myself missing very little of the show during the week. Plus, you can fast forward through the brief commercial breaks.
Other technical aspects of the unit... The color display & navigation controls are great. There is a lock feature for when you're out exercising or jogging. You can save 30 presets. The remote control for the car is OK--it's rather small but you do get used to it. The battery life is good -- it comes with an adapter to charge at home, or it automatically charges when you have it docked in your car. It also works really well with your PC and transferring music to the unit. I really can't say enough good things about it. Like I said, others have had problems with it, but I've never really had any. I've heard great things about Sirius' customer service--and I've heard not great things about it. But I think the same can be said about any major company. I think the Stiletto is essential if you love the service of Sirius and want to have the ability to record programs and listen to satellite radio on the go. The unit's display glass *does* scratch easy, so consider buying the protective case. Good luck with your decision!
***7/21/09 Literally right after I wrote this review, my Stiletto 2 started malfunctioning. It would power up, and then almost immediately turn itself off. For a week, I'd say 70% of the time I tried to use it, I could not get it to stay on for more than a few seconds. Luckily, it was still under the year warranty so I contacted Sirius and they were very helpful. They sent me a "new" (i.e. refurbished) unit within 6 business days which has now been working for several days. So, again, I do highly recommend this, but remember to a) take advantage of the year warranty if something happens within this time b) consider getting an extended warranty or at least looking into one if you buy this at a Best Buy or similar store***
