These banana plugs took my 12 gauge stranded wires and made a solid connection. I purchased them through Amazon, and the shipment from SewellDirect.com was prompt. I am pleased with the purchase and have recommended them to friends. The gold parts appear to be solid brass, and the barrel is probably plated steel. These are a great value when purchased as a 24 pack from Sewell. Some vendors are selling them below cost and scamming with ridiculous shipping charges. Those low price scammers had me needlessly concerned about quality.
The banana plug male tip has 6 flexible (compressible) splines to fill the female amplifier connector jack and get good contact. I remember a review I read about ONKYO receivers and I will concur. My old ONKYO TX906 (about 1991 vintage) has female banana jacks that are so small that these Sewell plugs cannot be inserted. However, the Sewell banana plugs work fine on my ONKYO TX8555 that was purchased in about 2008. They also work great in my DENON AVR-2801 from about 2001.
The forward gold plug tip (call it part A) screws into the silver barrel (call it part B). The aft gold knurled end (call it part C) screws into the other end of the silver barrel and secures the colored ring (red or black). That part C knurled end piece is nearly 3/4" long, and is drilled through. The part C, aft end wire entry has a chamfer, a short cylindrical section, and a small shoulder that takes up the first 3/16". My 12 gauge wire could be pushed into the smallest diameter through hole, and is nicely secure. If you had heavier wire or extra thick insulation, you could still get a nice looking assembly by bottoming the insulation out on the shoulder.
I used the rear/aft wire insertion method rather than through 1 side hole and out the other. I divided my copper in 2, pulled it through the barrel side holes, and screwed rear part C down to pinch the wire strands between its forward end and the "anvil" threaded end of part A. Parts A and C almost meet in a shallow "well" just below the forward edge of the part B barrel's side entry holes (the well is on the tip side of the banana plug). The entire assembly is tight enough that there is good electrical conductivity between all of the parts. Fill the "well" with wire stands, and you will have a good connection.
An observation is that the threaded "anvil" end of the tip is scant 1/16" smaller diameter than the part C through hole. I am not sure what gauge of wire the part was designed for, but I could probably have splayed short ends of the 12 gage wire and had a good connection. If you have thin wires (I had some 22 gauge "speaker wire" to a small center speaker), you just need to strip a longer length of the wire end (maybe 4 inches). Then triple or quadruple it up and fold it over the edge of part C's forward end. That provides enough compression to get good contact and it works fine. 16 gauge wire would be easier to work with than that tiny 22 gauge stuff.
Sorry if my terminology is not AV standard...I am a mechanical engine guy that couldn't tell from some of the whining in reviews if these were good. They are!
