Customer Review: Good, inexpensive headphone
Summary: 5 Stars

Many have written glowing reviews about the PX100 headphone. I'd like to temper that enthusiasm somewhat. These are *very good* headphones for a reasonable amount of money, and certainly better than the cheap headphones that come with many audio players. They are not replacements for high-end, or even mid-range headphones, however. I own a pair of old Sennheiser 500-series open air headphones, and the older phones offer several times the sound quality of the PX-100 (Of course, they also cost more than $200 when I bought them in the mid '90s).

I purchased my set of PX-100s (I paid about $35 on Amazon) to use at work, and for this purpose they are perfect. I can listen to music, radio and voice recordings with reasonable fidelity. Yet, because they are inexpensive, I'm not terribly worried about theft or breakage.

The folding mechanism/protective case combo for these phones is genius. Once you get the hang of folding the phones, it's very convenient and compact. Great for laptop travelers.

Sound is good for an inexpensive, lightweight headphone. Bass response is strong, and clarity in higher ranges is quite good.

The cord is short, about 3 feet. Good for a portable player, but confining if plugged to a desktop computer.

These are open-air headphones, which creates a very natural sound and allows the wearer to hear ambient noises (such as someone walking into the room.) However it means also they are louder to others "closed" headphones.

Keep this in mind if you plan to listen to music at high volume. Others will hear what you hear. Sennheiser manufactures a "closed" version of this headphone (PX-200 I believe) that are slightly more expensive than the PX-100, but will keep noise from escaping.

Customer Review: Best Bang-for-the-Buck Headphones Around
Summary: 5 Stars

Got these in the mail today. I bought them for use with the iPod, after going through several other models from Sony, Koss, etc. Let me just say right away: I have never heard a pair of headphones for around $40 sound better. You have to hear these to believe them.

These are perfect for portable mp3 players. As anyone knows with portable headphones, usually you leave good sound at home in favor of having a pair of headphones you can actually take with you. These headphones sound great and are portable too. They collapse and fold into a little case that is included in the package. With these headphones, though, portability won't be what you remember--you will remember the SOUND!

Right out of the box, this headphone works perfectly. There is no break-in period needed. The treble is natural and clean, as is the mid-range. The level of bass these headphones are capable of producing is nothing less than astonishing considering the headphones' size. The brother model to these headphones (the PX200, which I also own) is basically twice the cost for maybe the only difference being a little more bass in the PX200. Save your money--go with these over the PX200. If I had to make one nit-picky complaint, it would be that I prefer more "snap" to the treble...maybe this is just an equalizer issue that I can work out later...

If I had to make a comparison to another type of headphone to let you know what these sound like, it would be to the Grado SR60--and the SR60 is considered a "legendary" headphone.

BOTTOM LINE:

Buy these. They are by far the best option for the ipod, and I even prefer them to Grado's ipod headphone. You simply will not find a better portable solution for you ipod/mp3 player.

Customer Review: Excellent Pair of Headphones!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought these over a year ago after reading reviews on Amazon and all over the internet. I could tell they were an excellent buy, and I wasn't disappointed.

3 Advantages stand out with the PX 100s.
Comfort - These put the stock plastic headphones that came with my CD players to shame. Those plastic pieces of crap can become deformed and are subject to awkward protrusions that can make wearing them much less pleasurable. Even compared to the iPod earbuds, especially after you lose the earbuds' foam pads, these are more comfortable. They simply exist on your head; the pressure is just right and they fit the form well. You could wear these for hours and not feel any discomfort.

Portability - Although the construction quality is such that these could be transported in a backpack without problem, the case is quite handy. Admittedly, folding and unfolding them is a bit of a chore, but it's not really a problem. The case does a nice job of providing extra protection and makes managing the cord much easier.

Sound Quality - This is a common theme in PX100 reviews, and mine is no exception. Though I'm no expert, I can speak from personal experience on this one. When these arrived and I put them on for the first time, I definitely noticed better clarity than I was used to. After listening to them for a while, I compared them to some stock headphones from CD players. The difference was astounding! It seemed as though there was an overlay of static on those. Though the iPod earbuds are much clearer, I could definitely notice a lack of bass.

All of this makes the PX100's an excellent value. I paid about $35 for them. I have no idea why every iPod-toting kid in the country doesn't just pick up a pair of these.

Customer Review: Comfort and quality at a reasonable price
Summary: 5 Stars

From the moment you put these headphones on you realize just how important comfort really is. The Sennheiser PX100s don't compromise quality for comfort either. They have a surprisingly firm and well-built feel to them for such lightweight headphones. The sound is blended acoustically very well. I am no audiophile but I have a keen ear for good sound and these headphones definitely reproduce the stereo high quality sound of the original recording.

After reading all of the reviews I knew I had to try these puppies out. I test-drove the Bose phones at the Apple Store and even purchased a pait of Sony's bass driver earbuds. Both of which sound good. But the Bose are way too expensive at $300 plus, and the Sony's were just missing something. After giving the Sennheiser PX100s a good listen I am convinced that they sound just as good as the Bose and are even more comfortable and durable feeling. They blow the Sony's out of the water when it comes to sound quality.

Most of the reviews here express concern for the difficulty of packing the headphones away in their storage case. To be honest, I think that it is a bit difficult to pack them away also, but not as difficult as it may sound. But, definitely not too difficult to dissuade me from recommending these headphones to anyone and everyone who enjoys great portable sound. The storage case will be useful I know. It holds the headphones very securely and protects their more vulnerable parts.

In summary, these are great headphones. If you are looking for something to plug into the iPod and cruise around town with, take on long trips, or lay around the house listening to, these are definitely your headphones. Enjoy!

Customer Review: Exceptinal value
Summary: 5 Stars

I am listening to my nano on the PX 100 as I write this review. I am simply amazed at the quality of these headphones considering they only cost $34. Excellent bass, midrange and treble. I'm not an audiophile but I can afford to buy any headphones I feel like. I was impressed with reviews on the PX 100 so I figured what could I lose. You will not be disappointed if you buy them. I am hearing sound effects and instruments that I didn't hear using the ipod earplugs. Are they as good as a $500 set of headphones? No. But for 15 times the money you might only get 10% or 15% better sound. For the gym, for kicking around and not worrying about breaking an expensive plug or headphone, the PX 100 is the one to own. Padding on the metal band makes them very comfortable. A nice case is included. It only takes me 10 seconds to get them back into the case. They are also classy looking. One reviewer said he thought they looked cheap. Nonsense. Some people's arrogance astounds me.

Addendum: After wearing these to the health club I suspect a set of in ear canal phones would be much better at blocking outside noise. All the workout machines and the gym's pumped in music drown out the PX 100 sound to an extent. You can turn up the volume but then risk damaging your hearing.

Addendum: I purchased the Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 Pro in ear canal phones this week. They work great in the noisy gym. Very effcient. Don't have to turn up the volume much at all for great sound. They are a few steps better than the PX 100, but then again they cost $170. Two drivers in each side, with clear highs, midrange and bass. These are some of the best headphones I have ever listened to.
