Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser HD 202 Dynamic Headphones

Customer Review: 5 stars for sound & value, but...
Summary: 5 Stars

The Sennheiser HD 202 headphones have great sound right out of the box (full, not boomy bass, along w/very crisp mid-range and treble; they may sound even better after a break-in period at higher volume which I haven't done yet). Don't need a lot of power to drive them. These phones are excellent in making mp3 files on a personal device sound superb, especially in an indoor setting. And the great sealing out of household noise (like tv or conversations) allows these phones to be driven at very safe levels without losing sound quality. An excellent choice for around $20.
I've used them for about a month, and there are some negatives.
*The chord is 10' long so it is not optimally designed for personal/portable music use (it does come with an oblong wrap-the-chord-around belt clip w/4 slots to hold the chord in place...this may be a possible breaking point for the chord in the future if it flexes back and forth in the slot). The weight of this clip w/chord, if not properly clipped onto a belt, pocket, etc., would probably cause stress on any connection to phones or device. The chord seems to be pretty solid with reinforced connections. The end is a straight plug (I find L- shaped are better for personal devices because of less movement stress on the chord/plug connection). It comes w/a bigger plug adaptor for use w/home stereos.
*The fit is very tight so they do a good job of sealing out noise so I don't have to turn them up and ruin my hearing. They are not totally around the ear (I have a pair like that so my ears are "loose" inside and they don't hurt after long use, but those are much bigger than the 202's), so after about an hour my ears start to hurt a bit, especially with glasses, because the fit is so tight (but I do have a wide head). I think I will have to be VERY careful in cold weather not to snap the plastic head band when I take them off and on.
*As is very common with this type of headphone, they aren't great outdoors in a breeze. I got these partly to keep my ears warm in cold weather during walks, skiing, etc, but if there is a breeze it sounds like a "howl" in the phones. NOT FOR OUTDOOR USE w/COAT COLLARS. After using these for over a month, I find that in cold weather a coat collar rubbing on the ear cups or the chord (especially closer to the cups) will cause a lot of noise (not unlike the sound of breeze/wind on the cups, only more choppy...wind is more steady like white noise or a passing jet). I guess the only way around this problem is to use "buds" underneath an ear band or muffs.
For the price you can't beat these...a great sound improvement over in-ear phones (unless you spend a lot).

Customer Review: Excellent Headphone with good balance. Should I pay for the comfort is the question.
Summary: 5 Stars

Excellent headphone overall. Only complain I have is with comfort but having used other similarly priced headphone, I realize that comfort comes at significant price.

Sound quality is very good. Many of headphone at this price range has flat sound with exaggerated bass. But HD202 has very balanced sound. Decent accent on the bass but not overwhelming. High treble is there and decent mid-range. But it doesn't have that cheesy punch that other similar priced headphone may have. And that is a good thing for me.

Headphone is not comfortable. Its heats up on the ear and creates pressure spot like most other low end headphones. But the remedy for that seems to be 100+ headphones. Especially with my eye glasses I have difficult time wearing it for more than an hour. Question to ask is if you wear headphone for more than an hour. I usually don't. But if you do time to pay for comfort.

Build quality is pretty good. Cord is not the thinnest even though it is not thick. It should hold up for few years. 10 feet long cord is definitely a plus. I do not like short cords that pulls on the device or unplug itself. 10 feet is a very respectable length. So it is good for your receiver, your pc. But when you are mobile, it includes a cable wrapper that can shrink the length. It is a bulky plastic but you didn't pay extra for that so can't complain. Plastic feel is okay the padding is very thin and light substance that I am sure will flake off and britle away in matter of few months. Oh well, it's what I paid for. Overall for what you paid it is very well built headphone. HD201 is really cheesy. and I have used cheapest Philip that just broke a part. So this is pretty good.

Sound leak. Someone mentioned. It is pretty loud. I got good volume on my iPad. And if I was at library I will check on my leakage but when the can is seal on to your ear, leak isn't that bad but when it is not it is pretty loud. But little bit of volume control should fix it. If you are knucklehead who love to blast your own ear off, you probably won't be buying this.

I don't look good on this. My biggest problem. I will probably get another one. Open one with around the ear design. But it is good to have a cheap decent headphone rolling around.

After using for a month, headphone is a bit more comfortable. I can wear it for 2-3 hours even though the hot spot is still there. It doesn't have as much of a pressure spot as before for some reason. Sounds great. Not much bass to speak of though.

Customer Review: Solid low cost headphones
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll start by saying that I am by no means an audiophile. My last few sets of headphones were all earbuds (Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket 11mm, Vmoda Vibes, etc.) and I've always gone with overall subjective sound "quality," (how good they sound to the user) not actual fidelity of frequency response (how well they represent the source material and the minutiae thereof).

That said, I like these a lot simply for the fact that they bring out a lot of detail in the music I listen to. While I've grown accustomed to the slightly bass heavier sound provided by my Skullcandies (and am still quite fond of them), it's nice to put these on and hear a different take on my favourite music.

In comparison with the earbuds I'm used to, the HD202s sound a bit more "empty." That's likely largely a result of their providing less sound isolation. On the other hand, that can be useful when you need it; I like to use these when walking about the campus of the college I attend, and they allow me to enjoy decent sound quality while still remaining relatively aurally aware of my surroundings.

The HD202s are quite comfortable for me. They have a nice cushion on the top which doesn't get caught on my (long) hair, unlike many headphones I've tried. The side padding is comfortable as well, allowing for at least a few hours' worth of continuous listening without much discomfort.

The chord, of course, can be an issue at times. It's quite long (about 10-12') and when using the HD202s with my phone while walking I have to wrap the chord twice across my chest (like a shoulder bag's strap) to keep it from dangling. It can be also be useful at times, however. I can plug it into the headphone output of my studio monitors (which I use as computer speakers) and comfortably walk about my room to sit in a comfortable chair or lie in my bed, without worrying about the length being an issue. Related to lying in bed: These are also quite comfortable to use when going to sleep. I often put them on and listen to a podcast in bed before going to sleep, without issue.

All said, I love these headphones. They're not my favourite, and certainly not the best one could acquire, but they're unmatchable in this price range. As someone who's notoriously rough on headphones, that's important to me. For the poor man's money (being a college student means no more blowing $100+ on headphones), the HD202s are a solid pair of headphones and I give them a thorough non-audiophile's endorsement.

Customer Review: Exactly what I needed!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a guitarist who listens to a lot of different music. (mostly heavy stuff) For A while now I've been hunting for the perfect over ear headphone that fit all my very strict needs.

Here's what I wanted out of a headphone.

-a completely over the ear setup... basicly I had tried DJ style headphones before and was displeased because they didn't always go all the way around my ear. I wanted to be covered totally.

-Temperature was an issue too. I live in Georgia, and during the spring and summer it gets hot sometimes. All the Headphones I've tried before that go over my ears always get hot after a short time, and my ears begin to feel trapped.

-I love a good bass response in my music. I recently made the switch to an MP3 player with very low bass output and I knew I needed something that would have good bass on it.

-Overall though, I just wanted all this and a good quality sounding headphone for around 40 bucks or less.

I eventually settled on Sennheisers. Bose was too expensive and the other brands didn't have enough dirt on em' to trust. Sennheiser has a lot of reviews on amazon so I figured it would be easy to determine which one was right for me...and so my search for the perfect Sennheiser began!

At first the cheap and good looking HD 457 looked like a steal. It was indeed a headphone with some good specs for 30 smacks... However, I soon discovered that this unit suffered from comfort issues. The inside was not hollow so it presses down on your ears. Something I hate. I moved on.
I began looking at higher proced HD's in the 40-80 dollar range. They looked slightly better in quality and more comfortable. At one point I became close to buying the HD-515 but after some reconsideration I decided that 4 or so extra dollars was not worth only a slight upgrade in quality.

Finally i discovered the 202's. These baby's were some of the cheapest in the barrel, and looked like the were made just for me. So I ordered them.

They have everything I want. The bass is excellent. Almost perfect for my needs. It's not pressing down on my head and it's quite lightweight so I don't even know it's there half the time. The long chord is great for when I play guitar with them due to the fact that I walk around the room a lot. All in all I have no complaints. This is exactly what I wanted for around $25. Great deal, great company, great Headphones

Customer Review: One of the best headphones under $30 bucks!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a music studio in which I use Sennheiser headphones for headphone monitoring. When I got my new laptop, I needed something to replace the crappy iPod ear buds. Naturally, I turned to Sennheiser because of my familiarity with their products. My mission was to find the best quality headphones under $30 that I could wear for long periods of time. I like to take my laptop to cafés and such so I had to be able to wear them for at least a few hours.

I went to Amazon and tried out the HD ' 202 headphones. The previous reviews seemed favorable and the price was right. After getting them in the mail and trying them out, I felt compelled to write my first review on Amazon. These headphones are AMAZING. It's has the quality I've come to expect from Sennheiser that rivals headphones I've used that are over twice the price.

The highs are pretty crisp, and my impression of the bass is different from the other reviews; I rather liked the amount of bass the cans produce. A slight personal gripe: there is slight coloration in the mids that I didn't crave, but I brought the mids down a little bit on my laptop's equalizer to compensate. And now it's golden.

On my laptop, these headphones are pretty loud. They can play at maximum volume without any distortion or rumbling at all. I've put these headphones through its paces through various genres, and I'm happy to say it handles all styles of music very well, and you may even hear little details in your favorite songs you never heard before. For electronic a, it handles the wide stereo field well which is where something ear buds and cheap headphones falter. For hip-hop, I like the bass these headphones produce. The vocals are crisp. With rock music, the vocals cut through the guitars, and the lead guitars really sing. The drums are not at all piercing, even at high volumes. With jazz, these headphones really shined. It sounds like they are playing right in front of you, as the headphones translate subtle details like slaps on the strings on an upright bass, and subtone from saxophones very well. And with classical music, the ability to feel the wider stereo field makes you feel like you're in the hall.

All in all, these are the best headphones I've owned under $30 bucks, and it's a good buy if you want to hear your favorite songs the way they were meant to be heard without breaking the bank.
