Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser EH-150 Dynamic Sound Evolution Hi-Fi Stereo HeadphonesCustomer Review: All the info you need Summary: 5 Stars
Having used these headphones for over a year now, I feel properly qualified to review them. Here is what you need to know:
Yes, these headphones are awesome. They sound great, and totally kick iPod phones out of the water any day. I'm not a sound guru, so I won't start throwing frequency data at you, but I am a very discerning music listener, and these phones are amazing for the money.
However, these cans do lack vibrancy. When you start using them, you will notice that although everything is clear and sharp, the sound overall has a dull-ish quality to it. It has no punch - even iPod phones are more lively than these. But after a couple of weeks I became accustomed to it and used it happily for over a year. (The vibrancy never 'burnt-in'; whenever friends would borrow it they would comment on this lack of punch.) This is not a major issue - you will quickly become used to it and the cans still sound awesome; but it is something to keep in mind.
The sound cancellation is great. I have a large family, but with these on I am in pure heaven - I can't hear anyone! (Really annoys the family though. Haha.) Because the cancellation is so good, you can listen to your iPod and movies at much, much lower sound levels than you would need for normal iPod phones. So these cans are much healthier for your ears and will help preserve your hearing.
But now, after 12 months, the left side is playing up. To be fair, I listen to an obscene amount of music. I used these cans for many hours every single day. An average guy would get many years of use out of these, so I have no complaints.
If you are looking for great phones under $40, these are the ones to get. Enjoy!
Customer Review: Excellent Headphones, but identical to the HD-202 Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the Sennheiser HD 202 Headphones a while ago and have loved them ever since. They are my work headphones and make listening to other people's phone conversations a thing of the past. (No, they aren't active noise cancelling, but I didn't want that because of the distortion it causes) So last week when I started setting up my home office I decided to get a pair of Sennheiser headphones for home, because the 202's are big enough that I don't particularly want to carry them home and back every day. Shopping around on Amazon, I caught a gold box deal where these EH-150's were on for much less than the list price. (and only a dollar or so more than the HD-202's) I snapped them up immediately. When they arrived at my house yesterday I noticed that, other than the silver headband, they looked a lot like the 202's. Going to Sennheiser's website and comparing the stats confirmed it: they are exactly the same, but the EH-150's are 1.)more expensive and 2.)discontinued.
All that said, they are excellent, whatever the model number. It's true that they are a bit tight, but I have discovered that if you lean the band WAY forward on your head (at almost a 45 degree angle from vertical) the phones actually fit your ears quite nicely, and after a bit of wear the ear cups do form themselves nicely to your head. I can wear my 4-month-old 202's for up to five hours at at time without getting uncomfortable (other than the obvious heat from closed headphones)
If you're looking for an entry level set than I recommend these phones highly...but save yourself some money and pick up the newer version.
Customer Review: Forget about Sony... Summary: 5 Stars
Finally decided to leave the Sony brand after breaking my 3rd pair. I started off with the higher end of the MDR line but after breaking the 1st then the 2nd, I didn't want to spring for more than the V150s. The Sennheiser EH-150s are right smack dab in that price range, so it's fitting that I compare my new set against the lower-end models of the Sony MDR line.
I'm really liking my new EH-150s. The most significant advantage has to be the comfort. Because these fit over and around my ears as opposed to sitting atop them, I can listen to music longer without any discomfort. Beware though, if you have large ears these may not fit precisely. I'm guessing that after I break them in, these will sit perfectly.
The second advantage follows directly from the first. Because of the way they sit, the EH-150s can block some of the background noise. These headphones should however not be confused for noise-canceling, because they simply don't do that.
The third advantage obviously deals with sound quality (disclaimer: I am not a self-proclaimed audiophile). I primarily listen to trance music. Although this genre is rather bassy, it does cover a large frequency range. The EH-150s reproduce the music beautifully. I believe that this is helped by the fact that they sit over and around your ears.
All in all, I am very satisfied with my product. Dollar for dollar, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a better set of cans. I will not be going back to Sony. If anything, I will likely move up through the Sennheiser line as long as these prove to be reliable with continued use and light wear (fingers crossed).
Customer Review: I'm going to go deaf with these things!!! (That's good!) Summary: 5 Stars
Being a programmer at a big company, I've GOT to have some music to isolate me from the cube farm.
I started off years ago with some Sony Street styles. Those lasted about a year, then promptly disintegrated on me. Well, me being stubborn I went ahead and bought another pair! Which the same thing happened 1 year later. The only thing I learned from these headphones is that I liked having an in-line volume control. It's frustrating having someone bust into your cube and having your headphones blasting away N.W.A. or Electronica w/o being able to manually turn down the volume via the in-line control.
Fast forward I got some Philips DJ Style HiFi Stereo Headphone - HP430, they sounded meh, okay, but again promptly decided to break on me.
Last week I thought I'd upgrade to some big 'cans' such as the Labtec Elite 835. I was cheap though, only spent ~$20. What a complete and utter waste of my time and money! So I finally decided to 'splurge' and get these EH-150.
OMG the difference is night and DAY with anything I've ever had before!!! The bass is amazing, it's NICE finally having TOO MUCH of it, now I can turn it down when I want to, or if I'm really in the mood I can let the music take control and jam out hardcore with these guys.
Only 'negative' in my book is they don't have an in-line volume control, but that can be easily solved by going to an aftermarket plug in.
So, if you're a cube rat like me, seriously look into getting this pair. Definitely gonna have to recommend this set to all my friends.
Customer Review: Great Headphones Summary: 5 Stars
Terrific headphone for the price. Passive noise reduction is excellent. The ear pad size is a bit small to be described fully circumaural except for those with small ears, but suffice to say amount of external noise blocked (about 10 db) is enough to impress me. The bass response is excellent--they really meant it when they said there's "active bass" production. The extra thump is helpful in imparting an extra energy in modern pop and hip hop music which relies more on percussions and lower frequencies. The headphones are comfortable once you learn to adjust the ear cups to fit your ears. I have larger than average head, but I don't feel that the headband is tight at all--feels just fine, no distracting extracranial pressure. Design is rugged as well with thick cord and a sturdy, robust headband design. Although the cables split into 2 for the left and right headphones, I seriously doubt this was a cost issue but more of a design property--in my experience, single cord headphones tend have weak connection between the cable and headphone that over time and use, invariably results in the loss of sound in one phone. Although the headphone comes with two Clarity is excellent for lower frequency ranges although the higher frequencies do feel occasionally muffled or at least diminished, perhaps overwhelmed by the stronger low frequency boost. Only qualm lies with the length of the cord, which, at 10 feet is excessive for casual use; 5 feet would have been more than enough for most.
In summary: looks good, works WELL, economic price, simple, robust design.
