Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser CX300-B In-Ear Stereo HeadphoneCustomer Review: Great in ear monitor Summary: 5 Stars
I used Sennheiser CX 300B (Bought it here from amazon.com) for over 6 months now. I am very happy with its performance.
I owned 3 pairs of SONY fontopia (2 MDR-EX71SL, 1 MDR-ES51LP). I use SONY MDR-EX71SL when I am in gym using my ipod w/armband. The short cord of SONY 71SL is perfect for use with armband.
I own ipod nano and Motorola M25 MP3 players.
I like SONY 71SL, but this Sennheiser CX 300B just blow away SONY 71SL in every categories.
Sennheiser CX 300B
Pros:
1. The sound stage is much clear.
I am not a classical music lover. But boy, using this EIM in conjunction with ipod, I can really listen and appriciate classical music. Voice of Opera singers or Yo-Yo Ma's cello come alive. You feel they are singing or playing instrument in front of you. (Note: on ipod, I use EQ=Jazz when I listen to classical music)
2. Greater Dynamic range:
If you use it with ipod, try change the EQ to Acoustic, for good recording music, you will hear all these low's you wont hear from regular earphones. Regularly, the high/mid/low are balanced. In my comparison, the SONY 71 or 51 sound small or limited(flat) compared to CX 300B.
3. It is much louder than the SONY 71 or 51. This means you can tune down your MP3 player volume to save battery.
Cons:
1. I have no problem using it with ipod or my laptops. But when I use it with the Motorola M25, I hear this humming sound many reviewers here mentioned. If I switch to SONY's, I dont hear humming sound. There might be a compatibility issue with some MP3/CD players.
2. It comes with 3 sizes of silicon in ear fitting but none of them fit my ears comfortably. Luckily (or unluckily), my SONY MDR-51 die so I took its silicon in ear fitting and they fit perfectly on Sennheiser CX 300B!
3. The cord, while it is better than the SONY MDR-51(my MDR-51 cord literally melted for regular use of less than a year), has its problem. My problem with the cord is it is taking curve shape because I tend to warp it around my ipod when not in use.
Despite these cons, I still highly recommend Sennheiser CX 300B in-ear Monitor. It is much cheaper than Shure and it sounds better than the SONY.
Customer Review: The durability of CX-300's Summary: 5 Stars
I bought a pair of CX-300's back in 2007 when I started film school, I ordered them not really knowing what to expect, but I wanted something that would isolate noise and provide decent sound quality. By decent I mean not too much treble, but not drowned out by bass, I knew Sennheiser was a good brand, but that was about it.
I only paid around $22 shipped for mine. When they first arrived and I tried them out, I was completely blown away. I had never tried an inner-ear headphone before these, my only experience with headphones were your usual Panasonic or Sony pair that run from 30-60 bucks. The type of music I listen to ranges from Hip Hop and Rap to Grindcore and Thrash metal, and I've listened to it all with my CX-300's. It alllll sounds great. In fact, if you listen to metal, I have yet to find another set of headphones that make metal sound that good, the clarity is amazing, I was scrambling to find all my old albums to hear stuff I had never noticed before even on big speakers.
I also used the CX-300's for my work on student films when I was a sound mixer, I couldn't afford big expensive noise-isolating headphones, and these worked fantastically. They survived 2 student desert film shoots, and many other shoots, a few times I dropped them in the sand on accident and stepped on them, I also forgot they were attached to me and yanked myself from the sound mixer without damaging them at all, I did that a lot actually, the cord is very tough.
Two years later, I handed them down to my sister and they still work great! Part of the reason I wrote this review 2 years after I bought the headphones is because I purchased a set of the supposed upgrade from the CX-300 to the CX-500b's, and after having them for a couple months, I miss my 300's and plan on buying another pair soon. The 500's have way too much bass. I find that most metal songs sound muddy and usually just plain bad, even with an EQ. I even did a thorough online check to see if I had received a fake but I had not. The 500's are still great for two things though: music with A LOT of bass and...video games! I found they work great when playing PC games, but I'm definitely going to order that new pair of 300's and keep them plugged into my mp3 player.
Customer Review: A high quality alternative to Sony Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered these CX300s after my second pair of Sonys died. I loved the fit of the EX51 and EX71 Sonys and put up with their adequate sound for the isolation and comfort they offer. What I couldn't put up with any more is their fragility. I received maybe 1 year's service out of 2 pair of Sony phones and I refused to give them any more of my money.
When I saw these Sennheisers with a similar design as the Sonys I was excited as I have two other sets of Sennheiser (over the ear) phones which are excellent. Well, I'm not disapointed. These are more accurate and articulate than the Sonys and have much better bass without getting muddy. They fit as well as the Sonys and have a symmetrical cord*, which I prefer and believe will improve their durability as compared to the Sonys which always fail on the left (short cord) side.
I can't speak to the durability of these phones as I've had them only a few days but they COULD NOT be worse than Sonys that are certain to fail quickly.
I've seen a few posts that criticize these phones for their poor bass response. I suspect these people have not tried fitting the different rubber gaskets to attain a proper fit. I did this and the sound quality difference is amazing.
These phones also seem more efficient than the Sonys as they are louder at a lower setting. My point of reference here has (obviously) been the Sony EX51s and EX71s as they are of similar (in ear) design that I find very welcome when out on the street for their abilty to isolate one from ambient noise. These are not IMO, replacements for a good set of over the ear phones when in a quiet environment. That's not a knock on these specific phones as I don't believe any "in ear" design can compare with good over the ear phones.
Highly recommended!
Update: subsequent to my writing this I've come to learn that I purchased (through an Amazon associate vendor) the generic version of these earphones. They have the same drivers and gaskets, but a different cord* and no Sennheiser logo. After this was thoroughly explained to me, I'm fine with it as this version of "Sennheiser CX300Bs" have a Y cord and not the asymmetrical cord which so many of us have come to dislike.
Customer Review: Awesome Earbuds! Highly Recommended! Summary: 5 Stars
First I'd like to state that I'm not a picky listener and I have little experience with music quality and things of that sort; previously I was using a pair of 10 dollar Sony earbuds, and before I broke them(accidently stepped on, lol) the pair that came with my ipod Classic. These are definitely an improvement. They are pretty good at isolating outside noise. It comes with 3 sizes of silicone tips, I have small ears and these fit nicely, so if you're worried about the fit, there is no problems there. A few things to note, they have an asymmetrical cord meaning one cord(the right earbud)is longer than the left; I'm not a big fan of this, it looks semi awkward if you're not wearing them correctly(lol, they have instructions on how to properly wear them inside), plus I tend to rip the left one out occasionally, that being said it's a small subtraction. Anyway for 20 dollars, these are totally worth it, selling for 59.99 at most retail stores. Lastly I wouldn't recommend these for gym use as they do slip out fairly easily; this is due to the fact you have to have this sort of "seal" with the silicone tip and the ear canal, they never really feel secure, as they would with a sports/apple earbud. That being said, these come highly recommended for casual use, such as walking to class, on the bus, sleeping etc.
What's in the box? Not much, the 3 sizes of silicone buds and the earbuds themselves, that's about it. Also they have a 2 year warranty for the earbuds, which is nice.
Note: Make sure you buy them from an authorized dealer, I bought mine directly from amazon and they are legit; that being said, there are people who apparently are getting fakes from Amazon, so I guess it's hit or miss. You can check if you got fakes fairly easily by checking the physical characteristics, just google fake Sennheiser cx300's, you'll get pictures and what not.
Quick Summary
Pros:
Cheap 19.99 from Amazon
Improvement over ipod earbuds and cheaper earbuds
Nice outside sound isolation
Clear sounding audio
Great for casual use
Cons:
Asymmetrical Cord
Not for gym use
Easy to get fakes, google this.
Customer Review: These headphones are phenomenal! Summary: 5 Stars
I just recently got these and posted a review which somehow got lost so here's the redo. I purchased these to replace my Sony's since the left one had stopped working completely, causing a wobbly sound as I worked out, not great at all! I was concerned about the 'fake' issue but trusting Amazon I went ahead after reading a great review which cited correspondence with Sennheiser stating that Amazon is in fact an authorized retailer.
I did compare the packaging to some pictures I found online (google Sennheiser fakes) and after I was convinced they were legit I let my husband cut them out of the packaging (I recommend using a knife or scissors and just cut in, it's quick!). I tried them out and was blown away by the major improvement over what I was used to. Great bass, wonderful clarity, and I was able to put my volume back down where it belonged from almost maxed out. I even ran up and down the stairs to simulate the gym. Cord noise was minimal, and to be expected from in-ear headphones (ever play with a stethoscope?) it just comes with the territory, but it was much less than my previous pair.
This Monday I used my new 'phones at the gym for the first time and was thrilled to turn down the volume and still cover the loud spinning class who yells and screams and also barely hear the cord, but hear beautiful quality tunes. The medium buds fit perfectly into my teeny ears (iPod earbuds didn't even come close to fitting in there) and never once slipped out during 45 mins of cardio. I barely noticed they were in! The cord is better worn behind the neck as the packaging instructs. My sony's also had the asymmetrical cord, but 'proper' wearing didn't make a difference. With these the cord noise is much, much less when worn to the design.
Great price. Great sound. Great buy. If for some reason you get yours and think it might be fake, just call up Amazon. I have heard only amazing things about their customer service! Just be sure you are buying from Amazon (page will show item eligible for Prime shipping) and not a third party since there is no good way to know how legit their suppliers are. Good luck!
