I've had the Seagate FreeAgent Go 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST905003FGA2E1-RK (Silver) for a few months now and love it. The little program that comes with it makes backing up my files completely painless. I just plug it in each night and the drive does all of the work. It seems to be very quick and so far it has been reliable.
Actually, when it arrived I thought I would hate it. I cannot stand the LED lights manufacturers insist on using to light up their products, especially the blue ones that seem to be burning out my retinas and piercing holes in my skull. I have even resorted to using permanent marker to cover up the worst offenders. For this, though, there is a setting that allows you to turn the lights off. Finally, a manufacturer with some common sense!
If you are deciding between this one and a drive with an external power source, I would highly recommend this one. I also purchased a Western Digital WD Elements 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDE1UBK10000 about one year ago. As much as I like it, especially the fact that you get more GB of memory for each dollar spent, the plug is definitely something I could do without.
If you are planning on carrying this around, you may also want to purchase the Case Logic Compact Portable Hard Drive Case (Black). It is an inexpensive case that is just the right size for the hard drive.
