Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Seagate Barracuda 7200 1.5 TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 32MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drive ST31500341AS-Bare Drive

Customer Review: Massive & cheap data storage
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been running 2 of these drives (purchased elsewhere) in a Sans Digital tower in JBOD configuration since December 2008. I added two more (from Amazon) to the 4 slot tower in January. All the drives arrived in perfect condition and they have been running flawlessly to date (3-16-2009).

The Sans Digital tower is storing large and infrequently accessed data files, so the drives are not stressed and run cool in the well ventilated tower.

Sept. 2010: I needed more space on a ReadyNAS NV+ that was running 4 Samsung 1TB drives, so I moved 4 of the 1.5TB Seagates to the ReadyNAS. The NAS expension worked and the new configuration is running well. I've seen no failures with this generation of drives. (The 1TB Samsungs have been less reliable; out of 6, 1 is reporting severe SMART errors and made the ReadyNAS nearly unuseable and a second one is accumulating more SMART errors than I like.)

Customer Review: Barracuda Rocks !! Great HDD !!
Summary: 5 Stars

All,

Barracuda promises few things
1. Rotation Speed - for more data transfer
2. Lesser heat compared to previous baracudas
3. 32 MB Cache offers good data speed

I have been using this HDD for almost 6 months now and i am perfectly fine
with the fact that it has not given me any problems tilll now.

The only problem with 7200 RPM drives is that they are a bit noisy.

BUT, this series is comparatively less noisier than some other barracudas.

For me, noise is not a big thing to worry as i have put this in a external esata based
enclosure which i connect as a external storage to my PC.

Overall, this is a excellent Hard Disk to purchase.
I am expecting 7200 RPM and 64 MB Cache series for my next purchase.

Its worth a buy when it comes to barracudas!!

Customer Review: Fast, huge, and reliable
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased 2 of them months ago and they are great!

The firmware issue only affects and old batch, so right now (Aug 2009) its safe to buy (even when I buy them months ago it was safe :P )

I have one of them on a backup-NAS and other one on my PCH Media player, right now I'm planing on buying a 3rd one (unless something bigger from Seagate shows up).

The only negative I can think of is the heat, (they are hotter than the 750GB Samsungs I have) so be sure to have some kind of ventilation for them, and don't place them on a non-ventilated enclosure.

BTW, they are really fast drives, you can verify it online on major review sites, in fact I was really tempted to replace my PC's 750GB Samsungs with them, but I really needed the extra storage on the NAS and PCH.

Customer Review: Server Storage for Home
Summary: 5 Stars

I basically got this drive for extra storage to round out my HP MediaSmart Home Server. It has a total of 5.44 TB formatted using the Windows Home Server Software. All of my interal drives are this size and all are the brand Seagate.

The ease if installation was a piece of cake... very easy to do.

The overall performance and quality of this drive is as expected. I never buy new (if possible) but Used Like New. You get a better deal on the item. I would recommend this brand of hard drive to anyone needing a hard drive for a computer or server. You can't go wrong. The noise is not even there... They all are so quiet. The only thing I hear are the fans from the server.

I love the price. You won't be sorry for investing in this brand. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Excellent value for the price!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this Seagate 1.5TB drive to replace my broken external LaCié 500GB, the USB enclosure of my LaCié Drive was still good so I decided to put this new drive inside, formatting was taking long in Windows Vista and it failed a couple of times, but I then formatted it from inside a Desktop PC and it went quickly, then put it back inside my usb enclosure and it's working great!.
There are several reports about this drive having firmware issues and freezing, which I have not experienced at all. While it was inside the Desktop PC I took the opportunity to install the latest firmware released by Seagate to make sure I wouldn't bump into those issues that I had read about.
I am happy with this drive!
