Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Scosche passPORT Charging Adapter for iPod & iPhone (Black)Customer Review: It works on Infiniti Cars with Bose Audio Systems Summary: 5 Stars
Long story short - it works on Infinit cars with the standard iPod interface. It works on both the iPhone and iPod.
Recently we had to upgrade my wife's iPod in order to get more capacity for songs. We used to have an iPod Nano 4rd Generation, which worked perfectly in our 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible and 2008 Infiniti EX35. The Infinitis came standard with iPod interface connections through their Bose branded stereo systems. We purchased a new 6th generation iPod Nano (comes with a clip and has a touch screen) and immediately ran into several issues - the iPod wouldn't charge, it would shut itself off and one would need to restart the iPod manually and it would lose its place in the playlist when the car was stopped. The Schosche solved all of those problems - the iPod can be charged, it doesn't shut itself off and it retains the place in the playlist when the car is shut off. Connection is very easy - just plug one end into the iPod cable and the other end into the iPod. The Schosche isn't particularly big, but it is about the size of the new iPod Nano. The Infiniti actually has a tray in the center console to hold an iPod, so we haven't had any issues with it disconnecting from the cable or iPod.
Schosche has a list of cars / radio systems that have proven compatibilty on their website - so it's worth checking that out for information on compatibility with one's car stereo system.
Customer Review: If you have an iPhone 3G, an iPod touch 2G or a nano 4G, you need this. Summary: 5 Stars
When Apple introduced its latest batch of music players, it quietly removed the last remnant of FireWire compatibility it had been keeping in to maintain compatibility with older accessories: 12V charging support.
Unfortunately, this means the new devices cannot charge on older "compatible" docks, and even on recent ones because some manufacturers have been ignoring Apple's warnings and have persisted on shipping 12V devices even after being told support for this voltage was likely to disappear from new models of iPods.
Luckily, Scosche was able to come up with an inexpensive pass-through adapter which lowers the voltage and supplies 5V to the right pin, essentially restoring the charging capability of your old device with your new iPod.
There is not much to be said about the device itself: you plug it between the dock and the iPod, and it works.
I have been using mine for several weeks with my iPod touch 2G with three devices it couldn't charge on before: a car adapter and a couple of third party chargers. I was particularly thrilled to see I wouldn't have to take apart the dashboard on my car to update the car adapter, at several times the cost of the Scosche adapter.
Pros: inexpensive and just works.
Cons: the added length may prevent your iPod from fitting into some docks or holders.
Customer Review: Exactly what I needed! Summary: 5 Stars
This adapter worked perfectly for my Alpine car stereo. I can't recall exactly which Alpine I have, but it has a hookup for my ipod that worked perfectly with my Nano 2nd generation. (I live in a fairly rural area and for whatever reason, FM transmitters don't work right for me.) I was so bummed out that the ipod hookup wouldn't charge my 2nd generation Touch. I Googled an adapter for the Touch and I was thrilled to see that one was available! I came to Amazon and was happy to see that it was about $5 less than the Apple Store AND qualified for free shipping. The adapter works exactly the way it is supposed to. I plugged the ipod cord into the adapter and then attached this to my Touch -- woo-hoo! Now I can charge the Touch while playing my audio book through the car stereo. I'm sure that in the future, the price will come down, but I think it was worth the $$ spent. (I work from home but commute two hours each way twice a month to the office. I NEED to listen to my audio books to keep the drive across flat Minnesota terrain from being a total bore.) I will be buying the other adapter this company has available for my clock radio that has a cradle for the ipod too. (I sure wish Apple hadn't changed the connector on the Touch.) Anyhow, this is definitely a good purchase if you love your Touch and need to be able to play it through your car stereo.
Customer Review: A bit pricy but worth it Summary: 5 Stars
I received the adapter yesterday and have used the device twice since. There's not much to it really. Just plug it in and it either works, or it doesn't. In my case it works great! My iPhone now charges while plugged into my 2008 Scion xD Pioneer audio system and still interfaces with the stereo as it should.
A few notes to be aware of:
The iPhone still displays a message (that can be ignored) saying the "accessory is not compatible" because it still detects the "older accessory" (aka the Pioneer sound system) through the adapter.
I also found that if I disconnected my iPhone (leaving the adapter plugged-in) while still playing music, my car's stereo would still think the iPhone was plugged-in and would become locked into the "iPod" screen. The easy fix for this was to either turn-off the stereo before disconnecting the iPhone, or disconnect the adapter also.
Conclusion:
At $24.99 (or up to $30) it's a bit steep for such a simple device, but it's far better than the alternative of not being able to play music while charging with some other car iPod/iPhone charging device. The Scosche passPORT should easily pay for itself with the amount of use it will get.
Customer Review: Works as designed. A definite money saver Summary: 5 Stars
Recently, I upgraded from a 2nd generation Ipod classic to a 32gb Ipod Touch. Prior to purchasing the Ipod Touch, I had a BMW dealership install an Ipod adapter to the navigation system in my car to allow me to use the navigation screen to select my directories and songs. The BMW technicians had to disassemble part of the dashboard to access the navigation system. I paid over $400 to complete the conversion.
When I connected the Ipod Touch to the Ipod adapter in my car, the directories would display on the navigation screen. I could also select the songs that I wanted to play. The only problem was that the installed adapter would not recharge the Ipod. The problem was caused by the BMW adapter attempted to recharge the Ipod Touch at 12 volts. The Ipod touch only accepts the 5 volt USB recharge. I received the cannot recharge display on the Ipod Touch.
The Scosche adapter successfully converted the 12 volt recharge circuit to a 5 volt recharge circuit without having to rewire my car. The sound quality and the directory control remained intact. A less expensive alternative to paying to have your car rewired unless it is under warranty (doubtful).
