Customer Review: Sangean makes a real clock radio

We wanted a new clock radio with an analog clock for ease of reading at night, but with full electronic features. Clock-radios have generally declined to cheesy mediocrity but this Sangean filled the bill with high quality and great functionality. The only other analog unit we found was a $200 Tivoli with great sound but few features.
The RCR-1 has all the bells and whistles plus a highy legible analog clock dial. A REAL clock...with hands! The radio synch with the NOAA atomic clock signal is a nice touch too.
I don't know what kind of problem the other reviewer had with the back lighting, but we think its just fine. Perhaps he didn't find the brightness adjustment knob. The display button on the front only switches between low and high...the fine adjustment's hidden on the bottom. We find the clock easily readable at the low setting from across a dark room. The digital display is a bit busy, but you'd usually look at it only when changing a setting.
The station presets are great feature if you go to sleep with the radio on...you can wake up to a different station. And the buttons are so much easier than fiddling with a tuning knob. The seven day selection for the alarm means no need to turn the alarm off/on on the weekend. As you'd expect from Sangean (a RADIO maker), the radio is very good in both AM and FM reception and it has a quality speaker and a tone control for nice rich sound. The dual alarm also lets a couple set individual wake-up times if needed.
Typical of so many electronic items, setting the controls for the many functions are a bit complex; but since we only use the basic alarm and radio functions, thats not a big deal. The instructions are just adequate and not very detailed. Our only complaint is that the wake-up radio volume is set separately and its lowest is pretty loud (though it comes up gradually).
Considering that most clock-radios sold today are so cheesy and cheap, this unit is well worth the price considering it'll probably give us many years of service.

I purchased this clock after reading the various positive and negative reviews. Frankly I can't find any of the negative features described by other reviews. I like this clock.
I have the blue light turned down as low as it will go, and have no trouble reading the analog clock in the middle of the night, the light is quite dim and does not light up the room. The digital clock display is useful for setting up the clock, the radio stations, etc. Has no function in the middle of the night, and is not readable with the backlight turned low. If you want a digital readout clock then that's what you should buy. If you must read this one at night then just reach over and push the brightness button on the front, you can certainly read it then, but it will light up the room. :)
Some of the buttons have more than one function, works perfectly fine.
This is a well made clock, attractive and functional.

I really like my Sangean Alarm clock radio
- Outstanding AM reception. It will pull in weak signals like few expensive radios can. Same for FM reception.
- Two programmable alarms.
- Each alarm can be set to use radio, radio/beeper (not a buzzer), or just beeper.
- Each alarm can be set for different days of the week. I find I rarely need to touch the alarm settings after it's programmed.
- The beeper alarm doesn't jolt you out of bed. It starts with a light beep and increases in volume (which is also adjustable).
- The display light, which has two settings. One for sleeping and one for clear viewing of the display (also adjustable).
- Two clock displays: Digital and Analog. I find it easier to read the analog clock during the night.
- Accurate time without adjustment. The one thing you don't want to need to adjust is self-adjusting.
I love this clock radio and recommend it highly.

I live in Eastern Maine...quite far from the Fort Collins site for the time updates but have no problem with obtaining the signals...early this morning the clock did switch over to DST. For a small radio the sound is good. I especially like the night light display control. You can adjust the time display perfectly...bright enough to see at night but not bright enough to interfere with your sleep. Programming it was quite simple and the multiple station buttons are a great feature...the station I want to hear at night is not the same as the station I want to wake up to...this radio makes it easy.
With respect to reading the digital time...the only time I want to read it is when I am in bed...if you are close enough to turn it off you should be able to read the time. The analog clock is a nice touch though. All in all I have no complaints. Its a great product.

I purchased this radio because the clock radio I was using had awful sound/reception. The sound that comes out of this radio is excellent and the tone is adjustable. I read several of the reviews that said the instruction book was hard to read - I thought it was pretty clear and the clock is pretty intuitive. I didn't have any problems getting the atomic clock to set - it did itself within a few minutes of being plugged in. Its easier than alot of the clock radios I've encountered in hotel rooms!
The clock is also very attractive - it has a modern, hi-tech look to it and the silver and blue combination is great. I'd definitely recommend this clock - worth the money!
