Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sangean RCR-1 Advanced Atomic Clock Radio (Classic Black)Customer Review: Good sound, horrible user interface Summary: 3 Stars
I read the reviews on this machine before I bought it as a replacement for another Sangean clock radio that had the speakers go out, and even though there was one review that mentioned the complicated instructions, I thought surely I'd be able to figure it out. I'm pretty tech savvy and so's my husband, so how hard can it be?
Well, pretty hard, actually! The most complicated part is setting an alarm, which I need to do pretty frequently. Yes, it's got a handy feature that says on MWF I need to wake up at this time and on Sat/Sun I need to wake up at this other time. But actually turning the alarm on, wow. This is so poorly designed I can't believe it. I need the "instructions" to help me each time I need to change my alarm. I'm thinking of writing my own UNDERSTANDABLE instructions to keep on the bedside table since this is so counterintuitive as to be nearly unusable.
That being said, the sound quality is fantastic, the atomic clock worked fine for me, the tuner is very strong and gets weak stations great, and I like the analog clock though it is somewhat difficult to see at night, even with brightness controls adjusted. Time will tell how long this lasts. If it doesn't make it through this year, it may be my last Sangean product; we'll see.
Customer Review: Pretty, but... Summary: 3 Stars
Beautiful clock and resets itself after every power loss, which is why I bought it. But has a couple of stupid characteristics, the first being so bright in a darkened room that you wonder what light you forgot to switch off. In addition, the numbers are too small to set the alarm. You can't see the damned numbers without buying some reading glasses and putting them on, not the activity you hope for when going to bed. Do designers use what they design? You know, to discover what they didn't think of?
Customer Review: Nice, but... Summary: 3 Stars
It's a nice looking clock, very accurate, but... there's a couple of problems
1. It won't wake you up to AM radio. It switches to the annoying beeping.
2. The annoying beeping get's too loud too quick.
3. FM will wake you, but there's no way to fully adjust the radio volume. The lowest is still too loud.
Customer Review: well built, badly designed Summary: 2 Stars
OK, the thing is solidly built, sounds good, and gets decent reception. Setting up the alarm is a nightmare and I finally just gave up and use my little quartz clock when I need an alarm. And I am generally good at that stuff. It's that bad. Also, there are three little buttons on the front--see them? The top one is power--not the greatest idea, because you have to grasp the top edge with your finger while you push the button with your thumb (the buttons on top can simply be pushed without rocking the thing backward). But, no biggy, I can live with that. The bottom button brightens the dial with a cool blue light (when not pushed, the light is dimmer, and fully adjustable from dim on up--very nice). So--that is all fine. Now you have the middle, or Devil, button. It is RIGHT NEXT to the power button, mind you, and you will often be using this product in a state of sleepiness. Well, push that button ONCE and it sets a "Nap Alarm". So: You are falling off to sleep and turn off the radio--but accidentally touch that button first. Well, you won't be sleeping for long...
Customer Review: Impossible to read in the dark, analog clock is flaky Summary: 2 Stars
Had this since May 2007, retired it after about 18 months.
Pros: The "humane waking system" is delightfully gentle to wake up to, and the day-by-day options for the dual alarms were great for weekday versus weekend alarms.
Cons: Keep the book handy, this is a complicated machine.
Unless you turn it up bright enough that it lights up your room like the sun, the digital readout on this clock is impossible to read in a dark room. I liked the analog clock just for this reason, it was easy enough to read without lights. But, it continuously got stuck at 10:10, just like the picture! The first few times a solid wack fixed it, but alas, eventually that too ceased to work.
