Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sangean DT-220A AM/FM Stereo Pocket Size Radio with Self-Storage HeadphonesCustomer Review: Choose: the 210 or the 220? Summary: 5 Stars
If you've gotten this far, you probably know that, outside of military gear, Sangean radios are the most expensive but worth every penny. You've got to have one! The real question is: the 210 or the 220? It's a tough choice! For (male) Gilligan's Island fans, it's as tough as: Ginger or Mary Ann. We've got both, so here goes. OK, you know the size and feature differences. In general, the 220 has some more features (Clock, Alarm, Light, Retractable Ear Buds, Power Jack, and Telescoping Antenna). The 220 does not have the Deep Bass Boost (DBB) that the 210 has, however. The 220 uses AA batteries vs the AAA batteries in the 210, but the 210 gets great battery life. We use Duracell 1000 MAh rechargeables and get several weeks use on a charge. We suspect that the actual radio part of the electronics is the same for both. Both work well with high-end earbuds. We have several Shure models with impedance < 30 Ohms and all sound very good.
The best way to decide is based on your primary use. If you intend to walk around with the radio and use earphones, the 210 is the best choice. It is smaller and gets great reception with earphones plugged in working as the antenna. The DBB helps for music. If you intend to set the radio on a surface and use the speaker, the 220 is the best choice because its larger speaker is noticably louder, cleaner, and fuller sounding than the 210's. The speaker is also more effective when the radio is sitting vertical, which the 210 can't do well without help since it's so thin. In this scenario, the 220's telescoping antenna is put to good use.
Hope this helps. If you can't decide, get both Ginger and Mary Ann - I mean the 220 and the 210!
