Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Ultra 16 GB Class 4 SDHC Flash Memory Card SDSDRH-016G-A11Customer Review: A genuine 'Class-6' SDHC card for the price of a 'Class-4' Summary: 5 Stars
The labeling of this item (SanDisk Ultra II 16 GB SDHC card) is very confusing. On the front side it claims a maximum speed of 15MB/sec. At the same time, it is marketed as 'Class-4' (which means a minimum read/write speed of just 4MB/s). To move up to a 'class-6' card from the same manufacturer, you have to buy the SanDisk 16gb Extreme III SDHC card which costs 2-3 times more.
I decided to take a chance with this Ultra II card, even though my new Canon EOS Rebel T1i explicitly requires a 'Class-6' card for video capture. I'm happy to report that the card is fast enough to keep up with my camera, even in burst mode and in 1080 HD video mode.
My own benchmark (see 'Customer Images') revealed that the read speed of this card is consistently fast at 18-19MB/s. But its write speed is strongly dependent on the data file size:
- For small files of 1MB each, the card is only able to write at about 6MB/s. That means it qualifies as a borderline 'class-6'.
- For typical photo files (4-6MB each), the write speed is much faster at around 10MB/s.
- When writing a huge file of 1GB, the card can actually achieve the claimed maximum speed of 15MB/s.
The SanDisk Ultra II may not be a good choice if you want to use it as a ReadyBoost device (frequent writing of smaller file). But when used in digital cameras, this 'class-4' card is just as fast or even faster than other brands of 'class-6' cards (such as the Transcend 16 GB SDHC Class 6, which levels off at 11MB/s for large files). This makes the Ultra II a great value - especially for those people who prefer to stay with a trusted name brand.
Customer Review: Works in my Dell Mini 9 netbook! Summary: 5 Stars
SanDisk Ultra II 16GB/15MB SDHC Card
I was looking for a 16GB SDHC memory card to serve as auxiliary storage in my Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook which has only a 16GB solid state hard drive (SSHD). I had read reviews of other 16GB SDHC memory cards, some less expensive than this one, but all the others had some cautionary reviews about premature failures or failure to be recognized in one or another device. But all the reviews for this SanDisk product were good, and I took the plunge. Happy to say that it was recognized instantly, and though I have made only two road trips with it, so maybe a bit too soon to give long-term torture test results, it has held up just fine. By the way, after using it with Ubuntu Linux, the OS with which the Dell Mini shipped, I hacked my Dell Mini to run MacOS X (Google "Hackintosh"), and I can report that the MacOS also recognized this card without a hitch, though I had to reformat it with the MacOS first (a one-minute operation, no big sweat).
Bottom Line: highly recommended, even if it might cost a few bucks more than other brands.
Customer Review: reliable Summary: 5 Stars
This card is reliable. I expected all cards to be reliable, but looking at reviews of other cards it seems that's not the case so it bears mentioning that this particular card is reliable.
I've had it 2 1/2 months in my Canon SD1400IS point-and-shoot without experiencing any problems whatsoever. I've gone through probably a dozen cycles of taking photos & videos then offloading to my laptop. Twice I've filled the card to capacity. To transfer I physically remove the card from the camera and insert it into the laptop slot, which apparently is risky with other cards due to static electricity. I use Windows Vista File Explorer to cut whole directories from the card and paste them onto my laptop hard drive. That's how I use the card, and it's worked flawlessly.
The speed is sufficient. I've taken ten minute HD videos and the card has kept up just fine. I do have to wait between taking stills but I'm pretty sure that's an issue with the camera itself, not this card.
16gb is of course big. If I didn't take a lot of videos I'd never fill up this card.
Customer Review: Nice AVCHD video on my ZS3 Summary: 5 Stars
This is my full-time Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 card. Shoots 2 hours of hi def AVCHD at 17 Mbit/s smoothly. Using the hi-speed burst feature, also shoots 10 pictures/sec smoothly. Granted, on the ZS3, hi-speed burst mode is limited to 2-3 meg picture size and 100 pics total, no lag detected, but not comparable to DSLR performance. Hi def video and picture playback on the ZS3 using the mini-HDMI port to a 50" hi def TV is equally smooth. Just a perfect card for the ZS3.
Repeating a tip read elsewhere and attributed to the pros: for card longevity when using a Windows computer, just copy your files, don't use move or delete. Use the format function on the camera (not the computer) to delete files from the card, and use the camera's delete function to delete individual files.
Note: Purchased from Beach Camera, through Amazon. My card arrived quickly and says "Ultra" not "Ultra II" but does have the 15 MB/s on the front. This is simply a marketing name change, nothing more.
Customer Review: SanDisk Ultra II 16 GB/15MB SDHC Summary: 5 Stars
I received my SanDisk SD card in six days which is great for free shipping.
I inserted the SD card into my Zen mp3 player and figured out how to access the SD card with my computer fairly quickly and easily. I have so far only put one small file on the SD card just to see if it would work and how it works. The Zen mp3 player does not allow integration of the SD card with the Zen library so I plan to use it mainly as an emergency back up in case I use all my space in the Zen library. This SD card is recommended by Creative after being tested on their products. This was encouraging to me to know that it would work. The SanDisk wasn't the cheapest SD card but I liked the idea that it had been tested on Zen mp3 and that it would work.
Another plus is that it comes with a MicroMate card reader. I can insert the SD card into the MicroMate and then plug it directly into the computer. Just having that versatility is reassuring that it is money well spent.
