Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Sansa Fuze 8 GB Video MP3 Player (Black)Customer Review: One Happy Customer Summary: 5 Stars
This is an awesome player. Unlike most others, it actually works the way you think it should. You plug it in to your computer and it comes up as a device in Windows Explorer. Under the device are a number of folders which are organized logically with names describing their contents such as Audiobooks, Music, Photo, Video. All you do is drop your content into the appropriate folder and play it. And it actually works. No iTunes or SonicStage or anything else required. On the other hand, if you are the kind of person who thinks those are a good thing, it does come with Rhapsody software which does the same thing, which I haven't even bothered to install so I can't tell you if it's any good.
There is one caveat about dragging and dropping video. It will play .avi but only if it is in the right format. Which makes sense because it has to be compatible with the small screen. Most video therefore has to be converted with the Sansa Media Converter software. But it is quite fast. Nothing like the hours you can wait having to transcode avi into different resolutions. And once it's converted you can drag and drop it between your hard disk and the Fuze. The screen is small but must be pretty high resolution because I can even read text from TV shows, like phone numbers, on it.
Recharging happens all the time that the USB cable is plugged it. One charge lasts hours, even playing video. I'm still amazed at what they can fit into such small things these days. Not long ago you would be lucky just to fit one battery in something that size. But this has 8gb of memory, rechargeable battery, video screen, FM radio, and microphone for voice recording. And it literally doesn't even cover the palm of you hand when you hold it.
Now let me list some negatives. There will inevitably be negatives if you use something extensively, but let me say you shouldn't let these put you off getting one. They are all minor in comparison to how good it is.
First the Sansa Media Converter software is not on the installation CD. It can only be installed by using the Sansa Updater program, which downloads it from the web. There is no way to simply download and install the program yourself. Even using the Updater there is no way to save the downloaded program for future installation. If they ever go out of business or take down their website you simply will never be able to install the program again. The Converter will only convert when the Fuze is connected and will only put the converted files onto the Fuze. There is no way to use it 'offline' to convert a bunch of videos while you are away then just copy them to your Fuze when you get back.
Another problem with the video in particular is it doesn't respect subfolders. In the Audiobooks folder, for instance, if you create a folder called Book1 that contains the files 01.mp3, 02.mp3, and 03.mp3 and then create one called Book2 with files of the same name, when you go to play audiobooks it first comes up with the option to select Book1 or Book2, then you can select from the list of files 01, 02, 03. With video, for some reason, if you do the same thing by creating Video1 and Video2 folders each containing 01.avi, 02.avi, and 03.avi, when you go to play it you are just presented with a list containing 01, 01, 02, 02, 03, 03. You can get around that by prefixing the folder name on files, such as Video1-01.avi, Video1-02.avi, Video2-01.avi, and so on, but that's an unnecessary hassle.
The Fuze is mounted as a device, not a drive, in Explorer. This means it has no drive letter, which means you can't access the files on it with a lot of software, such as a file renamer program. Pretty much all you can do is drag and drop. If you want to do any operations on the files you have to move them to your hard disk, do what you want, then move them back. This is what you have to do to prefix folder names to videos as I described above, unless you do it one by one. Most people probably don't have such requirements so it won't matter. But I often do things such as compare copied files with originals or globally rename files. None of that is possible without it having a drive letter and consequently not being able to browse to files on the Fuze from within software or a command prompt.
I found the volume is rather limited. I don't think I've even wanted it to go any louder then it does, but I often use it on the loudest setting, especially in noisy environments. That could also be due to the volume level of the audio file. But it doesn't give me any room for increasing it if I ever do need to in the future.
One more thing, which is not so much a negative as a wish list. The control wheel on the Fuze actually rotates, unlike the iPod, which gives it a lot of functionality. One function that could have easily been added is a position slider bar for music and video files. I listen to a lot of audiobooks, which are sometimes broken into individual files, but other times are all in one big file. If I'm listening to an 8 hour audiobook and I lose my place it can take 5 minutes or more on most players to get back to where I was. The fast forward on the Fuze is pretty good actually and the rate accelerates the longer you hold it. But still, I would just love to find a player that offers a position bar so you can just slide over to the 5 hour point, for instance, with one turn of the wheel.
This product is not perfect and I really should have given it 4/5 stars instead of 5, but I thought I better give it 5 to balance out any negative ratings so it will average out to 4. Like I said, none of the negatives should stop you from buying one of these. I highly recommend it.
